With generational talent like Gawn, Petracca, Oliver, Viney, May and Lever, the time is now to get serious about recruiting the right players to support this core, otherwise time will run out. Our midfield depth is severely lacking and is in desperate need of added quality, experience and variety. Look at how Carlton added Hewett, Kennedy, Acres and Cerra to their mix in recent years to support Cripps and Walsh. Sydney added Jordon and Adams to give Heaney, Warner, Gulden and co added strength and flexibility around the ball. We've tried ANB and Pickett through the middle but that robs a forward line already bereft of options of two important players. Add to that the need to recruit some competitive and reliable tall forwards to support JVR and you have Tim Lamb and Jason Taylor's homework between now and the trade period.

History is the best judge of the term generational talent. Other than Gawn who will go down as the all time best ruckman,  none of those other players come close to fit that description. Trac is a very good player but his kicking is a big let down.

Um u left Clarry of the OFF THE TRADE TABLE  list Just saying , JUST SAYIN!!

He has to go. Given his issues and his performance, it’s a late 1st rounder and some of his cap unfortunately. Will likely do what Grundy /JJ has done.

Id keep Petty and move him back down back to replace May who has likely 1 season left in him.

At Melbourne, they are most certainly 'generational' players. The point is, we've relied on that core group for so long but our lack of depth is showing particularly in light of Oliver's interrupted pre-season and Gus Brayshaw's premature retirement.

Thank god.

Not going to happen guys. No chance in hell unless Simon himself calls it. Even if we finish bottom 4, he will get at least next year.

Pert and Roffey are joined to Goodwin at the hip. While they're in charge, nothing will change.

They'll continue to parrot that we are close and in 'win now' mode, and sacking the coach would be counter productive.

By repeatedly defending him and protecting him, they have hitched their own outcomes to his and ergo - as long as it's their decision, nothing will change.

No time to panic, we don’t have the cattle, two good forwards away from turning it around.

Move Taylor on and invest in youth.

We played poorly for a few weeks. But only 2 goals in a half. again one quarter without a goal. No wonder I feel carply

as a supporter treated like carp by the club and players,

the coach and the management.
two weeks in a row sitting here , late at night, annoyed feeling like shirt ,  fancy agreeing with footy classified

and all we get are the same old platitudes

not happy at all

We won’t finish bottom 4. Bottom 6 most likely. Only a handful of players seem motivated to play for the coach. Some players that wanted out at the end of last season - in Oliver and Petty - are losing their trade value dramatically. That’s industry we are in, teams need to be forward thinking and rejuvenate their list, see problems as opportunities. We wouldn’t get anything near a first round pick for Petty this trade season, and he will still want to leave, and Oliver likewise.

Might be time to pay out a senior coach and some assistants and bring in some fresh eyes. Start moving on to a new game style and recruit those who can implement it. Would much rather see a direction, than treading water like we are now. Need a skills coach and goal kicking coach plus forward coach and midfield coach, that’s where we should start.

Wanted to unlike as I didnt actually agree with all of this. Dont wan to pay out , but dp want to bring in fresh eyes.

Dont want to change everything about the game style. We did have more scoring shots after all.

Would like to have the the direction reinforced so the players display it all the time.

Goal kicking seems to be the most obvious issue. Some of that is skill and technique. Some would also appear to be midfield and forward coaching structures and connections between the two.

WE need to start by the coaches working out why they are not getting the most out of the list we have.  players with less skill or less resilience do hav eto have their role known. They are not  all Max Trac Clarrie etc they nned to create space and smother tackle and shepherd so those players can perform their best.

All this should have been done years ago. It’s elementary stuff for professional coaches

you do not come back from this, the damage (whatever it is) has been done.

We have been deceived.

Look at Grundy last night.
To not play him last year was sheer arrogance and stupidity

This Club is like a Ferrari that hasn’t had a Service in 3 years.
We need new people running the place. Top to Bottom

The List can be salvaged but only with tough calls

We have never been a Ferrari just in the right place and right time.

Agree. Tim Lamb 🪓 Greg Stafford 🪓

Agreed.

We've got top-tier defenders and midfielders (May, Lever, Gawn, Petracca, Oliver and Viney), but the forward line has to be bottom-tier. We absolutely lack a top-tier full forward and centre half forward. I'm a big fan of Fritsch, but I think his best position is as the third medium forward.

Tim Lamb, list manager, has had this once in a generation midfield and defence yet has failed to recruit the tall forwards (by either trade or draft) to match the prime years of those mentioned above and thus support the premiership window. He has to go.

Edited by ignition.

He's a liability.

Forget past individual awards but he's killing us in games because he's a turnover merchant who coughs the ball way too easily by stupid dump kicks. He's playing like a sub par VFL standard footballer with the rubbish he's trotting out each week.

He's also in poor condition and it shows in games.

Other then the doggies game this year he's been incredibly poor all year.

This is not a "Ferrari" list.

100% agree...

It might be a lot of the same faces as those that won a flag in 2021, but that's the problem. It hasn't evolved enough to stay in contention.

We've been passed by.

I wouldn't blame Jason Taylor at all. He has been a brilliant recruiting manager for the Demons. He definitely might need some help though.

As for Tim Lamb, Alan Richardson, Troy Chaplin, Greg Stafford and Kelly O'Donnell. They are all in the firing line.

People at the Melbourne Football Club need to take responsibility for our poor performances and heads will need to roll at the end of the season if the rot continues.

Disagree. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t room for improvement, but our list in ‘21 was Top Shelf, it is now a shadow of that.

Gee, this place has gone mad. Everyone wants to burn the place down. It was only 3 weeks ago that we were sitting fourth. Yes, we have had a bad month, just like the previous three years at this time of year, although admittedly, not as severe. It happens with every club at some stage during the season. Look at Geelong. 7 zip and have lost 5 of the last 6. GWS were 6 and 1 after 7 rounds and were co-premiership favourites. They have lost 5 of their last 6 as well. Look at Carlton last year, they were sitting 15th after round 13 and ended up in the Prelim final.

The only real downer for me was Petracca getting injured.

I will throw you all some more red meat. I thought Goody's presser was encouraging. There, I said it.

Listening to Goodwin presser was like all isn’t broken, delusional, want play finals the window is shut , game plan is rooted, defenders are not fwds!

Thank god some of the posters here are nowhere near the football department.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
