HarpenDee 249 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 Since round 10 2022 we are something like 29 W 23 L. Maybe we've just been mediocre for a long time and now have Steven May with broken ribs, Viney with a shoulder, Clayton with issues, Brayshaw retired and Lever injured. 1 Quote

Playing injured players doesn’t help our cause. May is a complete liability. Why we didn’t rest May and put Petty back is beyond me.. Viney and Oliver should not attend another centre bounce together again until they are either both fit, or the midfield coach sorts out whatever issue there is in there. I’d rather play Rivers, Salem, Sparrow and Koz in the centre. With Trac out, might be time to give Taj some midfield minutes. Quote
IRW 1,388 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 13 pages of opinion on here, mostly predictable, occasionally realistic. It still amazes me though, to still read that we had a moral victory over Carlton last year and that Maynard was the reason we lost to the Pies as if that is correct or even relevant . Maysies statement last year was ill considered, but he is one reason that the dam of clueless unskilled mediocrity hadn't hasnt broken for the last two seasons and they havnt been beaten by a VFL team before Monday. The Pies showed how a good team culture can respond to genuine insults . Personally I feel sorry for Max TMac May Nibbler and especially Todd's boy, Jack. Lever would have been useful on Monday, but probably not enough to change the result The rest are over rated in various ways 1 Quote
Kent 2,920 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 Howe and Maynard almost best for the Pies Competed really well and upset our forward entries repeatedly Howe also ran off his man with good effect I like Quote
jnrmac 20,375 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 The one thing you can do even when you're not playing well is bring pressure Kings birthday, 85,000 people and we play our lowest pressure game for the year No one can sugarcoat that. Not even the Pollyannas on here Something is drastically wrong. The players aren't listening to Goodwin There is no heart. No pride. The time for tinkering is over. Max is a great player, one of our best ever but he's almost a liability now the way we continually dump kick it to him even when other players are free. Even if gets it the players up the ground are static. They are clueless about what to do, where to run, how to tackle, how to kick. Times up Simon 5 1 2 Quote

It's worth noting that pressure points are the weighed sum of pressure acts. Physical pressure acts are worth 3.75 points, closing acts are worth 2.25 points, chasing acts are 1.5 points and corralling are 1.2. I say worth noting because we were plus 23 for contested ball, which suggests we were OK in the contest - although down 20 less tackles cuts against that. But I'll bet if there is was a breakdown of the numbers we would have been hopeless for chasing and closing acts. That lack of pressure was a huge reason they were able to have free players to hit up on transition I think we are cooked physically and desperate for the bye. Which, I'd true, would result in a drop off in pressure. But there's a huge mental factor in being able to maintain pressure to a reasonable standard, even when fatigued ie pushing through. We didn't do that yesterday. And worryingly there was a lot of finger pointing and hiping teammates would cover spread. And there was almost zero third man in defensively. Quarter For Agn Diff 1 163 173 -10 2 146 199 -53 3 179 173 +6 4 167 201 -34 Match 164 187 -23 5 1 1 Quote

This is the front two rows on the third level of the MCC today. These are “usually” highly sort after seats for any game let alone a Kings Birthday game. I sit here most weeks and this is unheard of. I have NEVER sat in a row that has no other people in it. Yes the MCC is a mixed bag supporter wise, but the MFC still has a majority MFC supporter, member base. i fear dark times ares not far away again. It’ll be a lot easier to get a beer in the Redlegs now that the banwagon supporters will drop off. 2 Quote

From Nathan Buckley on the couch: “The other element that you really did expect to see is fire and brimstone, eyes rolling, after your opposition.” Instead we had a season low pressure rating of 164. I hate to say it but not that long ago, we would have come and ripped their heads off in response to a bad game like the one against Freo. Even if we lose against the Pies - show some anger and pressure and hunt. That was one of the most depressing and shocking parts about yesterday. 2 1 Quote

RedFox 536 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 To whoever noticed our flat body language pre game - I couldn't agree more, noticed a real lack of intensity in the warm up. One of the biggest things that is standing out at the moment is our inability to cope with any pressure on the ball carrier. This is exemplified with Clarry who at his best would drive out of stoppage, assess options, free his arms in a tackle and release. Now he just gets it and whacks it on the boot or handballs it over his head, fearing that he is about to get nailed. What has happened to our composure? Where are the one percenters, the shepherding, blocking, smothering etc. The reality is we have lost any type of cohesion has a unit and it's been building for some time now, towards this. I hope we can make a run after the bye but it ain't looking good. 3 Quote

Forget stats, loading etc. - the team is not having fun and playing like a team, and being there for each other. Confidence and team culture can be difficult to build but easily lost. We’ve definitely lost it. 4 1 1 Quote

DeeZee 7,496 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 We have always relied on our star players, but when we have Oliver who is a shadow of himself , then lose Pettacca to injury who do we have? Viney is also not playing with his usual mongrel either. Lack of pressure just proves we also don’t want it bad enough or there is something wrong behind the scenes. Not a happy team at Melbourne. 1 Quote
