But I think any comparisons to weed are a stretch.

I saw weeds first practice match. It was against the pies at Olympic park and i happened to be standing next to his grandfather.

Weed looked the goods that day. Strong leads and clean hands. Good stock and Hollywood looks.

Weed was a top 10 draft pick, so hopes ane expectations were justifiably high. 

But without bagging weed it became apparent pretty quickly that he lacked perhaps the most important attribute of any AFL footballer - competivness and desire for the contest.

Sure players can develop their intensity but really they either have it or they don't.

One of the clearest indicators is whether second and third efforts are 100% instinctive.

From the get go weed always seemed to have a millisecond delay in getting after the ball after the initial contest. That might fly at the junior level, but it doesn't cut it at AFL level.

The complete opposite is true of JVR. The thing that jumped out at me straight away when I first saw Roey play live was his intensity, competitiveness and will for the contest. 

That want for the contest and the ball is the reason why I'm so confident jvr is going to be a star.

A kid now, he will be an absolute beast when he is in his mid twenties

Keen to hear why you're of this opinion OD. I think a lot of us see the promising signs you look for at such a young age for a key position player. We know they usually take longer to develop.

What aspects of his game do you think he doesn't have to become a very good KPF?

Hell of a re-signing.

He's looked a bit gassed lately but I think the guy is tracking nicely.

Crazy, some of the comments.

The kid is good. Really good. Whether or not he becomes great is up to him and the footy gods, but having him around for the next 4, and hopefully more, years is a huge win for us. You can all debate his best spot, or if he's wasted in the ruck or whatever, and there are some valid points for both, but the kid is a dead eye dick in front of goals.

In a game where goals are king, and too many can't kick straight from 40, that's worth it's weight in gold. A quiet 4 or 5 touch game should still net a goal or two, plus the hitting the pack gives the Kozis and Chandlers of this world a chance to swoop.

JvR is good contract extension signing for the Dees. Hasn't really hit his straps this season but he is young, has a competitive streak and likes physical contact. He can mature into a quality forward over time.

old dee - absolutely no, zero, null comparison between JVR and Weed at any stage in their careers.  JVR has been super competitive since day 1

Jacob will  be as useful a player for us as Charlie is for Carlton during his career. His rucking role is under estimated and will improve his footy no doubt more he gets trusted. And he can go to defence as well for a cameo or lock down. You have not said much good about JVR but his best  oozes a very high upside once he gains confidence and more form. 

58er.   Agree almost totally with your summation though I don’t know where you got the idea of him doing cameos in defence or as a lock down.  I guess he could do it but don't see why he should. 

The more I see and hear from this young man the more I like, leadership aspirations as a just turned 21 year old is a great sign I believe he will make a lot of people eat their words in the not to distant future.😁

I'm surprised too that Neita was/ is shorter. He seemed a giant.

From my fact sheets,Jvr and Neita are exactly the same height at 6 four in the old language and 193 for the Europeans amongst us .  Though Neitas upper body was already around two axe handles wide at the age of eighteen.

Yes LITD I looked up AFL stats and they list Neita at 191cm same as Footy Wire however having talked to him at a number of family days he looked taller. Imagine if JVR can emulate Neita his contested marking was huge. 😁

I like to track JVR’s progress with Tom Hawkins. TH debuted a year younger but their stat comparison for their first two seasons are quite interesting. Both similar specimens at comparable age and development. 
Games, TH-19, JVR-26. Disposals-TH-196, JVR-227. Goals, TH-25, JVR-36. Contested marks, TH-23, JVR-22. Tackles, TH-24, JVR-57.

There is a significant divergence in contested marks and tackles but these numbers reflects more how the game was played then and now. I can understand why the club has given JVR a long contract extension. His upside is huge.

Because he played in defence in WA In Junior rep footy. In fact was in theWA U18 rep side playing fullback in the game vs SA before our GF win and was moved forward in the last quarter and kicked a winning goal. Happy Mon Thought all Dees fans know of his previous history in WA. ???  Played defence rather than forward for a season.

I wasn't comparing the Weed to JVR. Just mentioning how people were hot for him at the time. You are correct JVR has way more fire than the Weed every showed.

I get that od.

But i read your post as weed's journey provides evidence that not all players who show potential fulfill it. 

Sure some were hot for weed. But the heat dissipated pretty quickly.

In his third season at the club JVR has only given fans more reasons to be confident he will be a star.

Get on board OD, the kids a jet.

I must admit my interest in Weideman stuck for a fair while I am a faithful old bugger. There comes a time though, and  changing Clubs through one reason or another  made things easier in the end.
