Great band… I’m in somewhat regular contact with Marc Scully the bass player.

 A terrific band.

Funny you should mention the bass player, one of things i loved about them was their rumbling, swampy bass lines. The vid i posted, Passenger Blues, is a great example. Listening to it now on Spotify - they have 74 monthly listens , so plenty of scope for rediscovery!

The Deadly Hume was also a great name for an indy band in the 80s given the indy rock circuit basically consisted of Melbourne and Sydney bands driving up and down the Hume in dodgy vans and old station wagons.

And a tragically prescient name too.

One of my all time favorite bands, and one that i really think was destined for greatness and huge popularity, particularly with the Nirvana lead grunge explosion on the  horizon, was Eastern Dark (which i have little doubt you know well hardtack).

Around for little more than year, they crashed their van on the Hume on the way down to play gigs in Melbourne (one of which i was going to, and a mate's band was supporting).

Tragically their lead singer, James Darroch (ex Celibate Rifles - such a great, funny name for a post punk rock band) died, and the other two band members were seriously hurt.

They had not long finished recording an EP, produced by Rob Younger of Radio Birdman fame (a brilliant producer) called Long Live the New Flesh. Realized posthumously, it is 16 minutes of simply fantastic power Ramones inspired power pop. Great, clean sound and mix too.

One of the great Australian records.

Best of health HT - positive vibes coming your way.

I was shocked by the odds yesterday?! They're missing Adams, Parker and Mills from the midfield and were still tipped against us strongly... Feels like everyone has bought into the "melbourne is a dumpster fire" narrative this summer. Time to prove it wrong i guess!

Only 10 days til round 1!

im pumped!

Suggest you handle tonight first.

Arriving in Sydney in one hour then on to the game tonight, pumped.

I believe that today is Melbourne's earliest start to a season ever, beating the game vs Richmond played on Wednesday 8 March 2000. The season started and ended early due to the Sydney Olympics which opened in mid September 2000. The Demons lost to the Tigers by 2 points and went on to play off in the Grand Final that year.

Richmond  7.1  11.6  14.7 14.10 94

Melbourne  4.3   6.6  10.9 13.14 92

Attendance: 41,648 Venue: M.C.G.

I’m more than happy to go in as the underdog, and come out smiling! 😀  Dees by 20.

Cracking day here in Sin City, knocking off work early, leaving home at 5.
Was flat for moths after the Carlton game and the off season didn’t help. It’s amazing what a week in footy brings….

So pumped!

Alot to love in this post.

Great, short lived Sydney band.

Family.

My second favourite city.

Dees.

Go redlegs.

Sydney is your second favourite city? Really?

I reckon I have 100 ahead of it. (It used to be about 70, then Peter V'Landys happened.)

….

I’ve got a suggestion Jack.

Both ‘186’ and ‘GF 2000’ be added to banned list.

Yes, the Eastern Dark were a great band (I have both them and The Deadly Hume on my Apple Streaming service). I vaguely know Bill Gibson as he plays with a good friend of mine, Bernie Hayes, and was this year involved in the Elvis birthday celebrations at the Marrickville Bowlo in which I’m also involved, but couldn’t play this year because of my condition.

I’ve probably mentioned this numerous times before (combination of old guy syndrome and chemo side effect), but our two guitarists were playing in The Lime Spiders (Ged Corben - later started The Cruel Sea with his brother) and Grooveyard (Ian Little - also played in The Bambalams back in those days).

Gah! Wayward kicking cost us.

3.5 in the last. We had 'em smoked. A familiar tale.

Hopefully not the case for us today/this year.

Don't worry it'll kick in like clockwork come opening bounce.

I don’t think this will be an easy win

our fwd line is average without Kozzi and Petty (or another big target)

their 3 talls will keep lever etc busy so rebound will be hard

we should win in the middle though

Demons by 4 points

Good post. Yep it's really a question of where our goals will come from. I'm confident that Jvr and Fritta will lead the way. An improvement from Schache and maybe with Clayton back, Trac has a stint fwd.

Im surprised the Age hasnt added in this weeks Experts tips.

image.jpeg.08cd3b286c3bec1afc2376d3b7cf57ca.jpeg Good to see the ol MFCSS is back in 2024.

Given our off season, this will be a defining game. Get em Dees, give them nothing. I want to see scorn on their faces, no laughter or pats on back until the end, or unless a bit of magic happens. Angry and ruthless, us against them. Run out the quarters, get those late goals and go into the break on a high, and definitely to not concede in the time-ons. Pressure, contest and causing turnovers is the modern game and our DNA, plus holding it in our forward area and playing roles. The Carlton community game showed that our zone is still working unless the opps 'take it on'. Be interesting to see if we use fast and powerful plays down corridors, and some blitzing to create a string of goals.

Feeling confident.

Go Dees

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sunday’s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when it’s over.  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competition’s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • PREGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
