I don’t think it’ll be too far off that when a player like Brayshaw is forced to retire the club will receive a draft pick in return. He’s worth a top 10 pick but I’d be happy with an end of first round as I think giving away top picks damages the integrity of the draft. He’s a huge loss for the club and the timing is terrible.

Sums up Angus beautifully, but also refers to mayanard having to carry the load for this decsion by Angus and maynard's action.

IMO, Brayshaw is and will be all class and revered into the future. I know I will.

mayard is now a footnote/stain on AFL history (along with the Tribunal members who found him not guilty). A much bigger lifetime burden to carry than a lousy 3 week suspension he should have been handed.

How long until clubs and or the AFL are forced to pay out these contracts. He’s owed like $3million I believe. An in game incident leaves him out of pocket. It’s very likely he’s going to need ongoing expensive medical care especially in older age. Who’s paying for that? 

Given this an AFL directive through their medical team to retire him, the timing of this has impacted a club severely and the AFL should simply give us another 7-14 days, to take a replacement if we want to.

They have done this, not Gus. It is the AFL's timing.

Are we saying they got the medical report only on wednesday. Highly unlikely, as medical people would have had to meet and discuss it.

Tom Morris said he would receive every cent, it's just a question of who pays, club, AFL or Insurer, or a combination.

Yes. It is becoming a lot more common and there will be a lot more players being retired.

I would be very surprised if Nathan Murphy is allowed to play on.

i would guess that the management of this situation had a lot of involvement from club and AFL HQ. 

His medical team advised him to stop playing on the basis of the most recent scans. The AFL in no way sat idle in the background and not have their say. Had Gus elected to ignore the advice, i believe the AFL would have stepped in and revoked his playing license. 

I think there would have been a lot of compromises made on both sides but ultimately:

1. Gus would take full payment of contract (likely by club and AFL) and guaranteed coverage of all medical expenses and some other bells and whistles. 

2. Club would be exempt from TPP implications as a result of the immediate payout.

Should Angus be financially compensated absolutely. But in no way should Melbourne be paying it or wearing it in our cap. Unfortunately through no fault of ours Angus is no longer an employee of the Melbourne Football Club. The Melbourne Football Club exercised its duty of care on and for Angus, the AFL did not. This on them and should be coming out of league coffers.

The AFL is expected to have discussions with Melbourne about the salary cap implications of Angus Brayshaw’s retirement given he has five more seasons left on his contract.

The league medically retired Brayshaw and while the Demons spent Thursday farewelling their premiership star, his position will clearly set a precedent for all clubs.

Brayshaw could agree to accept a smaller figure on a contract of between $700,000-$800,000 as part of an agreement with the club or the AFL could grant the Demons some cap relief.

Rival list bosses agreed there was no set protocol for medical retirements given most players to retire recently including Marcus Adams, Paul Seedsman and Paddy McCartin did not have long-term deals.

The AFL’s intervention into Brayshaw’s career will give the Demons the best chance of reducing the cap implications of his deal until 2028.

reads to me like we're going to be carrying the hefty salary in our cap for the extent of the remainder of the deal - that would be very, very annoying indeed

Are you referring to Warwick Hadfield on RN? I heard it and thought he was incorrect. Wouldn’t be the first time. Anyone hear him yesterday on our’drug culture’? Basically aired a rumour

officially it was ultimately his decision but i don't doubt there was huge pressure from other sources including especially the afl. i wouldn't be surprised if there was a confidential agreement/settlement that you'll never get to see in entirety

Yes, a good comment, Rodney BG. There is a cloud on the lower atmospheric zone, impenetrable, unanswerable, tainting the earthly environment: Collingwood and all it stands for in terms of the polluting opportunities and influences of the AFL itself.

Educated guess. There is no doubt in my mind that all parties were involved in the lead up to the announcement to protect their interests.

Brayshaw would ultimately want some security for his future; AFL would want to protect its brand, minimize any future legal risks and somewhat control the narrative; club would want some form of compensation for losing a player. With all that on the table, deals are often reached where everyone gets close to what they want.

For what its worth, i don't think the AFL would want to be seen as forcing Brayshaw's hand as it risks some backlash and legal consequences for not suspending the action.

I wasn't referring to him (I have never forgiven his pro-Essendon position in the 'enhancement' program). But his co-presenter said it 3 times, so I guess she got it from him.

I think this assessment is not really getting the role in all this by the AFL and Gus.

Gus has  been having treatment since the QF collision. He has been undergoing numerous tests ( go to our website for all the info) which have involved our Clubs medicos and a band of neurological experts plus the AFL. 

His recovery has been going well but recently he received a test result from one of the experts that has shown his brain has altered slightly from the time it occurred. 

After this he has realised to continue playing would be risking his future and on the basis he has after consultation with family his wife Danielle MFC and the experts and AFL who are now monitoring all concussion cases. That gave a Cttee set up to assess each case. 

Patty McCartin last year was retired by this Cttee who advise the AFL who then don’t give to r player a permit to play to protect their health and safety. 

It appears that Angus has beaten the AFL “advice” by  making his decision once he learned of the deterioration even very minute in his brain. 

That’s Angus organized and how this represents his values and on what it means to him and the people on his life.

Patty Mac was told he had to retire very officially and I think it takes a lot away from the  value in your exit from the game and the people  and club and  love.

Melb have indicated they will look at offering some way to be involved still in footy at the Club if Angus wishes to take that up. 

All the best to Angus and Danielle in the future and thanks for all the great footy memories you have left us with your courage bravery and infectious manner you played and enjoyed yourself. 

Special memories I have of me sitting  in Optus Stadium at theGF on Angus’s wing whichI was lucky enough to  see up close his brilliant and brave third quarter to help change the game.  Amazing  goal and celebration that I will never ever forget.
