3. Max Gawn (Melbourne)

โ€œGawn plays a different position to Greene but is able to impact in the same way, his endurance allows him to position himself exactly where the team needs him at any given time.

โ€œBehind the play, a big mark down the line, inside 50 or influencing at the centre bounce. Has a calm, level head and is an excellent media performer.โ€

we have the best leadership weโ€™ve had for decades.ย

Max, Viney, Lever, Trac, Gus, May etc.ย

And other teamsโ€ฆ. Allen, Simpkin. ouch

Surprised Danger is so high and think Sicily should be higher

itโ€™s a pretty sad list of captains really.ย

only 5-6 quality leaders

The Bont went missing last year. There are far better leaders than him

Having just watched Petracca's interview this mention of Bontempelli brings to mind a couple of Trac's comments about the need for leaders to let the rest of the team play their role instead of the leader trying to do everything in crucial moments.

Having also just re-watched the 2021 3rd qtr highlights posted here the other day, my mind also goes to that moment of total shellshock in the Bulldogs clearance group. Bontempelli is a tremendous player and was probably their best player on that day, too, but his captaincy fell short when it came to steadying the team and the crucial few players at those clearances who desperately need to have their focus brought back.

I also think Toby Greene is overrated as a leader, mostly because I still think he is a *head just well covered by media love.

So... hmm, aside from that I guess I agree on at least the top three.

As much as I loved to despise Toby Greene over the years for all his infamous antics. I have done the big turnaround. ย Last season I thought that he did an excellent job as a leader of GWS. Not to mention he is an outstanding player. Geez, I wished they beat Collingwood in the finals. Sooo closeย

I frigg'in love Maysie. His leadership on Greville Street and at award nites leaves all others in his slipstream. I just wish he was occupying the same part of the ground as Brayshaw in a now infamous qualifying final. We would have seen some brilliant leadership that nite had it been so.

Without Greene GWS, don't get out of the bottom four, I think the Dee's would adjust without max, but maybe we would only be about 5 th on the ladder

Without Greene GWS don't get out of bottom 4, would love to have him at the Dee's, we would be unstoppable, how much hovac would he and kossie cause?

Gees once you get past Darcy Moore its a pretty average lot.

Neale a champion player but not sure on him as a leader.

Why? Decent player. Uninspiring leader, hasnโ€™t been able to even lead his team into finals or raise the clubโ€™s basketcase reputation. Zero media profile for a club thatโ€™s crying out for relevance. Middle of the road is about spot on.

nah

he's an excellent player and communicator on field, has lead the way in developing a strong attitude towards professionalism around the franchise, and is one of the reasons why they are developing strongly

Pretty much agree there, although i think Greene is becoming a very important Captain.ย
The Dogs lost to West Coast at home last year with a Finals Berth up for grabsย

Totally unforgivable in my opinion.ย
Bont is a great player, but not the Number 1 Captainย

Did he get another touch in The GF after Harmesy intercepted? I cannot recall him having any influence at all

The only thing he did after that was curtail Trac's attempted centre clearance to stop a 4th goal in the final minute of the 3rd.

Ahh yes. The last play. After the Damage was well and truly entrenched!!

I rate Darcy Moore as one of the best captain in the league.

Marcus Bontempelli is overrated as a leader imo. Champion player but..

Went to that game, saw a half fit Elliot Yeo towell him up im the first half.ย  Agree good player but not sure about no1 captain, I reckon dogs on field leadership is why they are the great underachievers over recent years

I think Sicily at Hawthorn is a little underrated in Cornesโ€™ list and while the Bont is great, heโ€™s not a premiership skipper like Max.

Now, if only the men/women/them who once were in white would give him the proper protection in ruck and marking duels, he would be way far ahead of the rest.ย

I try to avoid Clickbait Cornes so thanks for nothing Demonland.

However I think top 3 are spot on albeit Goffys Bont comments above are on the money. There's Bont then daylight in leadership at the Dogs.

Max is a more well-rounded leader than bont or Toby. Should be top for this reason. And he's not advertising alcoholic drinks like Moore.ย

I'm Little Goffy. 'Goffy' is my brother. Although he'd probably agree.

It is an interesting contrast between the Bulldogs' leadership and ours.

I'd say that while Gawn is clearly the outstanding captain, we have a wealth of leaders whether they are top-level players like May, Brayshaw, Lever, Viney and Petracca or just as importantly in the less renowned like Neal-Bullen, Melksham, Brown and McDonald who set standards and get around teammates regardless of their own personal form at the time.

The mood I get from the Bulldogs is of individuals who each play football and are on the same team rather than much active shaping of the team. Maybe there are just too many 'stars'? Maybe a little too much individual bathwater drinking compared to Melbourne's alleged collective bathwater problem?

On that analogy, I'm going to see myself out.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, weโ€™ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
