A revelation in his first year of AFL with his boundless enthusiasm, passion and attack on the football, van Rooyen promises something really special for Demon fans in the not too distant future.

Very good accuracy, averaged over 2 tackles a game, one season in and straight into my fave players.
I hope the hit on Mcstay in the final is out of his system and the sting of missing the Carlton game has him driven to play clean for his career ahead. Plenty of opportunities for him to tactfully impact with his strength and hardness. 
Looking forward to watching him build his goal (and assist) tallies and the manner in which he gets it all done.

Super debut season for Jacob, despite a couple of costly brain fades.

You don't want him to lose his passion or his attack on the contest but, if he can eliminate the really dumb acts from his game, he is going to be a very good player for this club over the next decade.

Did you see the latest interview of Jacob van Rooyen on the MFC website. How impressive and refreshing is this young man, when asked about the new kids coming through he responds with - love seeing the new recruits as we will be playing together for the next 10 years. Those sentiments warm the cockles of the heart.

For perspective, compare the 28 goals he kicked in his first full AFL year to the current best forward in the land (Curnow) who kicked 20 in his first full season back in 2017.

Couldn't ask for much more from a 19/20 year old key forward, particularly those early games against Sydney and Richmond. Unfortunately he had a disappointing finals debut, but I'm sure he would have bounced back the following week had he not been suspended.

Should watch BM to identify what are correct within-the-rules football actions.

Why? It is assisting him learn AFL footy and responding to his enormous competitive juices. And he is no slouch at the throw ins. Fullarton and JVR as Gawn backups sounds good  to me. Rooy would also be a good understudy behind play in defence. That will also bring his footy on quicker.

Only negative is yes a chance of injury with a mongrel like Mason Cox taking a cheap shot at him

Mr USA May not like the response from Rooy though especially if he is in those hideous glasses.

A few slagging off JVO for undisciplined acts which is very unfair on the lad.

His incident with McStay needs to be seen in the context of a hot physical final where one of your leaders has been taken out by a sniping moron. He went to a contest and clearly was worried about getting crunched. He made a split second decision to bump which he got wrong. Not a hanging offence.

As for his spoil on Ballard earlier in the season he was very stiff and the footy world was aghast he was suspended.

I'm not aware of any other undisciplined acts so if people are castigating him for the two incidents above they need to chill out

He got sucked in by Finlayson & cost us the Port A game & if he had played in the last final we may very well have won it so 2 stuff ups which cost us big time.

I love his attack at the ball but those brain fades were disastrous & I know there is a fine line between controlled aggression & recklessness & Jacob needs to find that balance.

Because plain and simple he's not a ruckman nor should he even be considered as a 2nd ruck option. Playing ruck doesn't make you "learn AFL footy" he can do that playing his natural position he's grown up doing extremely well and that's up forward. 

Putting him in the ruck takes away a strength of ours and that's having a solid target up forward to kick to. He's our best forward prospect since Jesse Hogan and a natural in that position. 

Petty and JVR should be the stationary forwards whilst Fullarton/Schache can play that 3rd tall/relief ruck. Its the exact reason why we brought Fullarton in, so use him when the opportunity is there.

You don't ever see Carlton throwing Charlie Curnow into the centre circle competing in the ruck nor did we ever see West Coast do this with Josh Kennedy.

Very exciting young player. Does the things expected of a key forward as far as kicking goals with good accuracy, taking marks in contests and on leads, and turning up to contest after contest. For all that, my favourite feature is his pressure efforts and pursuit of the ball and opponent even when it is going in the wrong direction. That's what made tom McDonald particularly valuable at his peak as a forward and it is great to now see a 20 year old embrace that part of the game so completely.

Agree. He's often spotting an opposing ruckman 10 or more kilos.
Far from ideal for a youngster to take frequent knocks to the torso.

Good on yer mate. If you think that cost us the game "big time" you need to watch more footy

 

Nb: McDonald kicked a goal with 4 mins to go to give us the lead so JVR cost us nothing

JVR doesn’t seem to just be towing a company line when he talks about rucking. And whilst I hope Fullers pushes his case, I’d rather not see him gifted a place in the side to save JVR when he’s shown no signs of needing it.

with Fritsch JVR Pickett and ANB (petty also if fit) as forward line locks, I’d much rather see the remaining forward spots go to whoever is playing the best football. And with mcadam, billings, chandler, spargo, BBB and the draftees all strongly in the mix, competition for spots is too hot to be gifting a position based on the 10-20% game time which has already serviceably been covered.

No because they are different style of players. Rooy is a total competitor and to give him an at opportunity to compete at throw ins does expand his role to us and get him into the game. 

Carkton put Harry McKay and WC Jack Darling are who Rooy resembles. Harry P can play the regular forward whose absolute skills are elite in marking and one on one. JVR will gain greater strength with the competition down forward and also Darling is akin to the throwin ruck game. 

Fullars will still be very handy and with Gawny occasionally our forwards  are going to get the opportunity to get the crumbs and forward balls that will be created.

The fact is Rooy may not have a choice in some games depending upon how we structure up. He did well in both his years assisting up forward and I don’t  think he will be overlooked by our MCttee.
