The problem with losing both of them is we also lose the on-field coach aspect. We're not exactly back in Frost/Oscar territory, but the cohesiveness our of defence relies on having at least one of them on the ground.

    Nathan Buckley said tonight On The Couch that he had a very similar injury to May, including the transverse issue and a broken rib, all from a marking incident.

    He said he missed a week, played the next (but was ordinary), and was right after that. Interesting insight.

    Depends if you are flying yourself (would be difficult) or in a plane which should be no problem.

    i suspect that you are thinking of a punctured lung / pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity around partially collapsed lung) where flying is a big no no.

    It’s a difficult one that the rule could be called the Dustin Martin Rule. 98% would be fine I think so the 2% might just have to go in with the Coach after a match.

    i had a fracture (heel) when i was 18.  only found out 20 years later when i had a foot xray which showed a healed fracture.

    Oh I completely agree. I don't think enough has been said about losing May (huge out against quality oppo, at their home) and potentially Lever. If both are our - we lose the 2 pillars - and as you say our generals, and on-field coach. We have depth, but it's limited, and certainly not to their quality/experience.

    May has been in stellar form too. Yes we have good depth. But losing May with Lever is a very big blow. These two that have played so many games together would have a significant symbiotic relationship. That said I've been impressed with Tmacs form and I thought Petty was moving quite well. So it's not complete panic stations. The timing isn't great with the two consecutive SA games.

    It just had to be us to score a SA team in gather round or whatever it's called. It is in essence another interstate match for us. I wonder if this was a concession for finally getting a reprieve from playing at Kardinia.

    Anyway, I hope the two of them are back asap. Like it hasn't been bad enough that our fwd line has been devastated by injuries. Maybe Tommo will get the nod. Most of us agree he played well in last game. As much as we will probably need Petty in defence, I love seeing him play fwd.

    There are some tough blokes about. I had only bruised ribs once and every time I coughed or laughed I was in agony. Could hardy to put on a shirt. Can't imagine playing a game of AFL footy.

    Yeah the synergy between them is a critical piece of our gameplan. It's great having the luxury of Petty back - and to know he can play up forward or back. Would also have loved him up forward, but tbh if it means a little more stability to have him out back, to find his feet again for a few weeks before returning when May/Lever return, that's OK. TMac and likely Tommo will do a solid job. 

    But yeah not lost on me either that our forward line was decimated, then in one half of footy, we lose the backbone of our backline. Footy Gods are nuts.

    lever and may will both travel to adelaide, with the former likely to suit up on saturday if he gets through training today and may a wait-and-see

Crack might be there on imaging, but without pain. No way that player plays until the crack is fully resolved, regardless of pain. Reason being that the crack can turn into a bigger crack, and career over. Not the case with ribs, or transverse process.

    Clayton Oliver left Melbourne training early on Wednesday has been sent for scans on a hand injury.

    This masthead was at Casey Fields on Wednesday when Oliver left training early, grabbing at his right hand and in clear pain.

    A club source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the injury was believed to be a dislocation that was unlikely to stop him playing, but the club had sent the dynamic midfielder for scans for certainty.

    Didn't he cop a a kick to the hand against the Doggies? Or someone this season, it's already a blur.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints.       What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
