Hang in there bro….we’ll get through this.

Three broken ribs and a small cracked vertebrae requires a conservative approach. No play over the next month and the earliest we’ll see Steven May on a footy field will be at the Anzac Day Eve game vs Richmond.

I also expect that Jake Lever will miss at least one game. 

They are the best individual assets in our defence. We have to look after them.

I've done a few ribs during my time, and once ripped off the cartilage - but never a few at once as far as I know, and in addition to a cracked vertabra. It's really hard to imagine May being back anytime within the next month at a minimum. It's not just the restriction in movement and difficulty in deep breathing, but shedding the protective mindset and regaining confidence in having the rib exposed. In the short-term he needs to be paired up with Spargo on rehab sidelines, such that he isn't caught out in painful laughter.

I’m presuming the vertebral ‘crack’ is however ‘non-structural’, meaning not part of the weight-bearing vertebral body, or the arch protecting the spinal cord. If so, recovery and game-readiness is determined by pain. If pain allows = play. 

With the rib fractures, assuming they are ‘non-displaced’, meaning not mis-aligned, he’ll miss the next 3 games, then look to first game after the bye. Doesn’t really matter how many ribs (excepting the acute pain factor - OWWW!), but is affected by the fracture position on the rib. If it’s easily exposed to knocks and/or movement, means longer to recovery, and risk of aggravation. 

For starters may wouldn't be able to fly & secondly we need him right for the back half of the season. 

My worry is when he comes back if he'll be targeted.

I had broken ribs and a damaged vertebrae back in 2018 after a motorbike accident. Fortunately for me I had a broken collarbone and shoulder blade among others to take the focus off my ribs.. 

He will definitely need 6 weeks before he is confident in them being hit. I still remember my first sneeze, it still troubled me to think about it.

One funny story, I went and watched the Melbourne v Hawks final and was still very much beaten up and on pain killers. I couldn’t sit in my seat I was that sore, I stood at ground level behind the goals at the punt road end. When Melksham kicked his goal, a bloke picked me up and bear hugged me. Single greatest/worst moment ever!!

Gee a lot of amateur doctors in here. Didnt know the scans or reports where available on the internet. Lets all wait until the clubs talks before we all give out diagnosis and weeks outs.

If Demonland ever went down in a plane crash on a remote deserted island, you'd probably be one of the last ones to be eaten. 

No major announcement re:Lever makes it sound like its more on the minor end and his subbing off was  more precautionary.

Given my (irrational) fear of flying, I would have s**t myself to death on the way down, so might be first on the barbie. But thanks anyway, Skuit.

Maybe 20 years ago.

But in our post truth, post knowledge, post covid world, Webber would be one of the first eaten.

Sure he studied for years and has continued to develop his expertise through his career, but does he do his own research?

So as far as we know May could be out for several months if the vertebrae fracture is problematic and Lever is unknown. Both injuries have got that 4 - 6 vibe about them, you know the 4 - 6 that stays 4 - 6 even after 4 - 6, even though everyone knew when the club said 4 - 6 that it could remain 4 - 6 well beyond the initial 4 - 6.

The less we hear about Lever, the better, I think (hope). Although it wouldn't surprise me if he's just a quiet, late out for the Port game. But if he's in, it'll make it easier to plug that hole. May isn't really the sort of guy you can cover, and he was in good form, but Tommo can do it, which allows us to keep Petty up forward - but if the sentiment is BBB can still cover at forward (and he's looking OK), then we at least have Petty - although not as big a body as Tommo. Conundrums!

nepo baby mcguire report on lever at least makes it's clear it's not as bad as it could be for lever...

Great news. Hopefully he is right to go against Port. I think Lever's organisation of the back line is an often overlooked trait of having him back there. He can help cover the role May plays. I think Tommo has to take Dixon. He gives a way 5-6cm but Dixon is slow and predictable. He can easily zoned off. 

Its Marshall and Finlayson that you have to cover. For me, TMac takes Marshall and Lever to Finlayson. We can pull back Petty only if required, but that comes at a cost to our forward line setup.

it was a genuine question; i could only think of weitering and murphy at the filth as prime tall defenders currently injured; didn't even know marchbank was crocked and docherty was a shame to see injured last round

 

I understand where May is coming from but three broken ribs and a cracked vertebrae is a lot of trouble just to avoid going to Adelaide for two weeks.

On a more serious note, I never would have thought this weird start to the fixture would work in our favour, but that round 6 bye is looking golden for us right now.

Numerous players will be well helped by the pause to manage niggles, scrapes and itches as well as assess their progress from  interrupted pre-seasons.

Note all the above, and the fella i thought was good was Howes. His job will be invaluable next couple of weeks
