Hustwaite was with Collingwood VFL for five seasons and co-captained the Pies for the last three years with another Magpie VFL stalwart, Lachlan Tardrew. He came from the Dandenong Stingrays and is still only 23 years of age. Standing at 184cm, he has been highly regarded as a midfielder and for his leadership going all the way back to his TAC Cup days. “He is the type of player who bleeds for the club he represents and if you want midfielders with grunt and tenacity, Hustwaite seems a great value option. He might not be flashy like some others, but his contested work and leadership is something clubs should take into account when considering players who could improve the culture of a club.” - Campbell Hustwaite He trained with the Magpies for an AFL opportunity during this summer’s pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) and, from all accounts, was close to winning a place on their list. I think it’s a great selection for Casey given the loss of such a great VFL campaigner in Jimmy Munro. Hustwaite should go a long way towards filling the immense void of talent and experience left by Munro’s departure and by playing with one of the competition’s strengths should do his AFL aspirations no harm. Its a double win as if melbourne are looking for a inside mid depth/replacement come midseason draft time he would already be in the system and know many of the players. 1 1 1 Quote
Older demon 2,818 Posted March 5, 2024 Posted March 5, 2024 I watched Caleb Lewis in the ammo's last year. The kid is a serious talent. Beveridge borrowed him for 5 games in the VFL which cost St Bedes a spot in the finals. That is such a good pick up 2 Quote

Played juniors at Sandy Dragons and was impressive. Key defender who also can go forward and kick goals. Had 2 years at amateur level and building up his frame. 2 Quote

fr_ap 2,566 Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 With Gus' list spot likely to be taken via an additional pick at the mid season draft (?), could Roan Steele get a look in? Judging by his game against the VFL Bulldogs in the Elimination final last season. Kicking 5 goals out of a team total of ten was an impressive performance. Considering most of momentum was going the opposite way. 2 Quote

Absolutely would be on a list of players for addition in mid season draft. His improvement is great to see. He is young, smart, fit and loves a goal. Would already be ahead of Chandler, Spargo etc in my eyes. 2 Quote

The AFL has adopted a policy of not releasing the body weights of individual players. Apparently, this has something to do with not body shaming fat or thin footballers so the media only gets supplied with height figures. Please don’t get me started on this one. 2 1 1 Quote

KC from Casey 7,211 Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 Congratulations to Mitch White on a great stretch as a player and skipper at the Casey Demons. He’s been a great contributor and excellent servant of the club. However, since he captained the 2022 premiership side, it’s been downhill all the way for the VFL affiliate - and not through his fault. We lost the experience of Jimmy Munro, Matthew Buntine and George Grey at the end of last year and had some bad luck with early injuries to Campbell Hustwaite and Leo Connolly who were meant at least to partly replace them this year. They hardly used Jack Bell who proved a better ruckman than the MFC listed rucks (granted that Will Verrall deserved to be played for his potential). Over the past couple of seasons, Casey’s been left in the lurch without key players held back including the day when most of the best players were prevented from playing in a final! Who would want to stake their reputation to be coach of the VFL team? Fair enough - the main objective is to gain the best possible result for the AFL team but it can still be cooperative in working with the VFL side to give its young up and comers the best possible space in which to play, improve and succeed. So while reviews are taking place at the club, it’s time for Melbourne to review its relationship with the Casey Demons and particularly, to do a lot more to support the team which is, after all, the place where we’re supposed to be grooming our young players into senior AFL footballers. In any event, one hopes that a strong effort is made to provide a strong stable of VFL listed players to replace the likes of White, Munro, Buntine, Grey, Ellison to allow supporters to enjoy the experience of supporting the Casey Demons. 10 1 5 Quote
BAMF 4,483 Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 Oh boy. There is going to need to be some big signings to replace what we have lost the last few years. Can I ask why we are losing these players? For example, why has Mitch White left us to play for Rosebud? Is this just Mitch getting a bit older and needing to downgrade to a lower league due to age? Or are they able to pay him more? 1 Quote

Yes pretty much. Similar to Jimmy Munro the previous year. 1 Quote
Witches Hat 494 Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 I'm pretty sure Mitch White was going to play for Rosebud this season but was persuaded to stay at Casey due to the massive exodus of experience. I guess they couldn't convince him again. 1 Quote

That answers the culture aspect, which is no doubt a big part (maybe the vast majority), my question more relates to talent level and money being paid to the players. The VFL is supposed to be the second best level in Victoria, yet when a player retires from the AFL they often play at lower leagues instead. Why is this? 1 Quote
