The Crows are embarrassing themselves playing hard ball over an uncontracted player who is borderline in their best 22 and 28 years old. 

My read of all this is his manager trying to leverage the South Australia connection to pressure Dees for some additional cash in a contract extension. 

He is imo possibly our best contested mark - an area of the game that we don't bat particular deep in - for that reason and the fact he has shown great promise as a KPF he is must keeper. 

Could not give a flying about either Tilthorpe of McAdam neither of whom are any better than average AFL footballers on their day. 

Adelaide continually going after Petty to me is reminiscent of the naughty kid in the supermarket begging his mum to buy him a packet of M&Ms long after she said no.  It's embarrassing to see.

Meanwhile them thinking Petty is comparable to McAdam is even more embarrassing.  Why would Melbourne trade a Jaguar for a Toyota?

His home town is not Adelaide, it's about a day's drive away on the other side of the bay.  So to say trying to lure him home is ridiculous.  Maybe South Australians like Cornes need to understand the geography if their own state.....

This.  This isn't Melbourne pursuing McAdam, this is McAdam requesting a trade to Melbourne.  Melbourne can just as easily say no thanks.

It's no different to country footballers requesting trade back home to 'Melbourne' when realistically home is still a 3-4hr drive in the country from Melbourne city.

Media really pumping this up for clicks. Hairy Garry made an interesting point to Tom Morris on SEN this morning, asking if clubs asked journos to pump up potential trades, and Tom mentioned some journos are easier to get than others, but that is was more likely managers using this to get more $$$$ for their player.

AFL / media need to generate interest in their product.

This is all that this is.

If it happens or not time will tell but all of this "negotiating" is media driven click bait to fill in time for what generally is a pretty boring time.

Most deals are agreed to in principle before they happen.

Yeah I am old fashioned and at heart a loyalist. The wheeling and dealing is eating away at the fabric of the game. It’s been part of the game for a long time but the creep towards an NFL or European league soccer scenario seems to gather pace each year. I accept this is the modern game yet I find it dispiriting and hollow. The players are like prostitutes and the clubs like pimps. Every time I hear of losing a player to another club as a result of a trade, I feel disappointed, sometimes sad, and a little hollow inside. For me, it’s the ugly side of the professional, business, money driven direction of footy. There are also so many leaches that benefit from this money ball circus. The AFL itself, the footy media some of whom are below contempt, player agents and managers etc etc. So many people seeking their pound of flesh. Despite the sell out during the finals and granny, and all the self promotion and acclimation by the AFL, more and more people are being turned off the game. Supporters still support their side but there is an erosion of the fanatical and passionate loyalties that existed in previous generations. The term “foreign legion” goes back as far as 1933 when the term was used to describe the South Melbourne side. So it’s not new but the extent of trading has grown exponentially. Increasingly, contracts are broken or renegotiated if a player or a club decide on a move. 
Do we accept this as part of the modern game, the world of professional sport and “entertainment” or should there be some attempt to reign in the trading circus with financial penalties from breaching a contract as there is in some many other spheres of life ?

Sadly, attitudes have changed. One of the most sickening aspect is the way so called supporters literally salivate at the prospect of pinching a top player from another club or when a player leaves to go to another club the player becomes a source of ridicule and criticism. The vice captain of the Pies or a Premiership player with the  Demons are criticised for their skills or lack of them. 
The whole show is a reflection of the disease so prevalent in the imploding capitalist society where values and standards are replaced by greed and self interest.

Melbourne swingman Harrison Petty is set to remain at the Demons next season after a mature and honest conversation with coach Simon Goodwin about his role in the team next year.

Petty had been the subject of a massive verbal offer from the Crows which would have averaged out at $800,000 a season.

He is interested in at some stage moving back to Adelaide to be closer to family, but Melbourne has shut down any trade talk.

And after discussing with coach Simon Goodwin about where he sits in the pecking order, he has committed to playing next year at the Demons to try to nab a second AFL flag.

Perhaps. But it seems to me that he wants to be a forward and we swung him around a bit.

His value will only go up ASSUMING he is healthy.

I believe Melb would only contemplate this trade if and only if:

1. They believe Petty will miss a significant amount of next season due to his foot injury.

2. They are concerned that he will miss a preseason. As a result, he won't have the required kilometres on his legs and will be unable to perform at an optimal level.

3. They are certain that he will request a move to the Crows at the end of the season with his trade value significantly reduced.
