I'd say the assistance picks are concession that McKay compo will be Band 2.

i would say that it'll be band 1

otherwise they would've been given pick 3, immediately after their own pick, as an assistance pick

The McKay deal has been estimated (by Marc McGowan in the Age) as 750k per year over 6. Not a slam dunk for band 1, don’t have faith that AFL won’t still make it happen though.

Gee if $750k x 6 years = $4.5M isn't band 1 then it's a very high bar.

It’s supposed to be the top 5% of salaries across the league to get band 1. I’d be surprised if 750k is top 5%.

Contract length is a factor too.  Maybe a contract worth $4.5M is top 5%?

On what planet is McKay worth that? He is a dud. Honestly.

He shouldn’t even be top 35% let alone top 5%.  He had averaged over 10 disposals one season out of his 7, in a team where the ball spends most of the game in his area.

By comparison Stephen May has never averaged under 10 disposals, and has been over 15 disposals for his last 8 seasons.

Isnt McKay stats among the worst for defenders in the AFL?

Any club stupid and desperate enough to fall for the hype deserves  whats coming. Wont be able to salary dump him.

Clubs never learn.

North will make a big play for GC's pick 4. They have been gifted 3 picks to throw at GC.

North are stacked with early pick mid types so i expect they would go for 2 of Curtin, Caddy and O'Sullivan.

Clarkson will insist on talls.

Of course if they get pick 3 for McKay they make all 3 or 2 plus Mckercher or Sanders.

We would then take best available at 5/6 and try to trade to an earlier pick to get Murphy (CHB).

At least he will clog Essendon's list.

If only the AFL had a stable, transparent system for such things.

AHHHH HA HA H AH AH AH AH HA HA HA HA HA HA GARG HARG HURG SNORK SNORK SNORK.

Setting aside the specific needs or not of North Melbourne;

The AFL was badly governed twenty years ago and its governance standards since then have declined at every moment of scrutiny and in every aspect of accountability.

Government by executive decree is how you destroy any intergenerational organisation.

Ibn Khaldun described it in terms of four conceptual generations of rulers.

Those who built the new dynasty,

Those who learned directly from the builders and carry on the disciplines of rulership,

Those who faithfully follow established habits without really understanding why, and then...

The destroyers; soft willed and only interested in indulgence and consumption, not creation, who will eventually be wiped out by hardened invaders from the deserts, starting the cycle anew on the ruins of the old.

The AFL has slipped unmistakably into the fourth generation.

Chris Scott having a whinge about the AFL draft concessions and manipulation.

Was more than happy to accept Jack Bowes and pick 7 from their little toy project club GCS last year.

Didn’t North have a stack of injuries this year. I think on list alone they could be in the top 10-12 next year. Not hopeless by any stretch.

He would know what his brother told them they needed to do in 2019 to stay relevant. They instead spent 4 years going nowhere and now have their hand out.

They haven’t made a single decision in 5 years to try and be competitive today. Their goal is to stack the future. That the AFL is encouraging it means clubs will continue to do this until told otherwise.

I hope it backfires spectacularly.

If I was Norf I'd put some pressure on the Dogs and see if they want to give up a first rounder for father son, Jordan Croft, another tall.

Might be pedantic but if a pick is after the first round or at the end of the first round, it’s a second round pick.

they are looking at getting a few pick 19’s which after father sons and academy picks us more likely to be picks 22/23.

wont make much difference to them. They have ~6 quality players and a lot of dead wood. they’ll be bottom 2 again next year.

their list is horrible outside of 6-7 players including a few gun kids.

5 wins from 45 games with a percentage of 63%

and they lose Ziebell, Hall, Goldstein and Cunnington

Probably only WC below them again next year

larkey, sheezel, ldu, simpkin, and thomas are an impressive top five players

who knows what wardlaw will be, while bailey scott is getting better all the time, and phillips and powell look like good second tier mids, like sparrow, but you'd expect more from a pick 3 and 13 respectively

add curtin as a key defender to develop plus another good ball user and they should get better quickly over the next few years

Generous.

You'd imagine West Coast will be getting the same sort of gifts in 12 months time if they have another bottom 2 finish.

Is there a criterion in terms of length of time at the bottom of the ladder? I mean, West Coast won a Flag only five years ago.

You’ll be walking.

Frawley is the only vague comparison and the situation at that stage was insane. In no way comparable.

Yes, we both lost a n1 draft recruit. But we then went through years of drafts that were extremely compromised. They’ve had top selections that are making an impact already.

Frawley was a high draft selection (12) and was AA, etc…

Then add to all this, he went to a powerhouse premiership team. That was the BIG PR problem.

AFL House desperately needed to rebalance. And even then, it was all a stretch.

Chris Scott is doing the good work at speaking out. Can’t stand him usually but suddenly he’s a genius.

No chance of p3 for McKay. No way.

This seems like a poor analysis.

Still can’t buy McKay compensation p3. Will not happen.

But also don’t understand Gold Coast taking NM picks for p4.

They’re not short on points. What they want, I’d assume, is a high F1.

Trade Grundy +p24 for Syd F1. Then 13 + Syd F1 (plus some later picks) to GC for p4.

That Bartel analysis is too basic. It’s always more complicated.

IF ...

headquarters thinks throwing round end of first round draft picks likes confetti is going to fix the Roos ...

THEN ...

it won't. Many clubs are furious with this assistance package, and rightly so.
