Round 16, 2023

5.15 against the giants’ 7.5. 20 scoring shots to 12….

A game we def should’ve won….

We win that game, the giants don’t even make the finals and Dees finish second….

not sure why I wanted to bring this up…it’s not very cathartic

We were a very poor team in close finishes this year:

Our losses:

1) Round 10 vs Port - 4 point loss - had no composure with our last 5-6 entries

2) Round 11 vs Freo - 7 point loss- Missed a couple of chances late and again poor composure.

3) Round 16 vs GWS - 2 point loss - Horrible last qtr with so many chances missed and a defensive lapse.

4) Round 22 Vs Carlton - 4 point loss. Denied by ARC, however had other chances late and blew them (e.g Salem)

5) QF vs Pies - 7 point loss - Missed a whole bunch of shots as we all know.

6) SF vs Blues - 2 point loss - Obviously we all know what happened but blew a heap of chances and had a defensive and turn over breakdown. Had no composure.

Even with our close wins, I only think the Brisbane one we did everything right. I thought we were lucky against the Suns (they missed that set shot), Adelaide blew some chances, while we shouldn’t have let the Pies get to 4 pts in the QBD game.

Not exactly what you expect from a seasoned team. Hawks or Cats wouldn’t have done this during their reign.

We were a dodgy goal umpire decision from 2nd spot.

I once got my finger caught in a sliding door. It made me unhinged. Not going through there again

Except Hawthorn did just that in 2010, 2011 and 2012. They missed the top 4 in 2010 by one game and should have won a bunch of close games. In 2011 had chances in the Prelim against the Pies but choked. Should have comfortably won the 2012 Grand Final but kicked 11.15 including 2.5 in the last quarter to Sydney's 4.2.

Geelong spent a decade choking including a stack of Prelims. Took almost a decade after recruiting Dangerfield for them to finally win a flag with him.

Maynard pushes his open hands into Gus to brace himself instead of tucking his shoulder into him, Gus plays out the game and we probably win through to a home prelim. Who knows what could’ve happened from there.

Don't know about sliding but - in Alice Springs, go figure - definitely slippery...

And then it all became 'slippery' as in 'between our fingers'...

Turns out football is really predictable except for the whole goal kicking accuracy thing, which is often a random number generator in the equations.

Premierships aren't easy to win.

Soooooo

how do we reduce the randomness then, having optimised the other stats to the extent they can be

Thread had me reviewing all our losses, our biggest loss was against Essendon. Need to absolutely pulverize them next year

The other issue is discipline. Don't give away dumb frees, don't get rubbed out for dumb actions. How many goals did Kozzie cost us on Friday night? How much more would we have scored with JVR in the team.

Or kicking better , winning 4 more and finishing 1

Need to return to team first discipline like 2021

Pickett needs the riot act read - in whatever way he best responds to

Club should be very direct with league about the draw - not going to kardinia for 20 years. Send Collingwood thanks

and the umpiring - we seem to get a lot of really poor decisions in key games like the Carlton arc

Biggest sliding doors of the year?

Tom Sparrow hitting a straight up easy 15m pass to Harry Petty.

We’re still implying that Sparrow was responsible for Petty’s injury are we? 🤦‍♂️

How about McKay not executing the tackle in the way he did or the AFL not scheduling us to play in Tassie at that woeful ground for the upteenth time

The tackle was absolutely fine.

Stop looking at the most outlandish and ridiculous things to blame other than a professional AFL footballer not hitting a kick most junior footballers could hit.

Jack Vineys kick to Weitering was the sliding door moment. He was out on his own, under no pressure, and completely coughed it up.

I still can’t work out what happened.

The Petty injury was the moment.

Surely we can't be going down to that hell hole again in Tassie?

I felt sick after watch that game live.

Finals

V Pies - 21 ifs and we win

v Blues - 33 ifs and we win

both were horrible losses but if (insert  any one of so so many events) happens, we win

It's a given that we'll end up playing down I. Tassie probably a week after playing down in Geelong.
