Where we linked to Reid at some stage? Imagine drafting Langford and Reid, all of a sudden our skill level goes up immeasurably

I think ESPN had us taking him in one of their phantom drafts, but that's the equivalent of a bigfooty phantom  draft

I freely admit, I'm a poor judge of footballers and I'm sure I miss the nuances that determine whether a top-level player is (or will become) good, bad or just plod along for 150 games. But that to me that was a nine-minute catalogue of making the game easier for your teammates.

From the footage I’ve seen I reckon his physical limitations are overstated, wouldn’t be against taking him with 9 at all

It's the kicks themselves, but also the time between getting the ball and making the decision. Beautiful.

Murphy Reid. 9 minutes of highlights and he fumbles once and he goes to ground once (pressure acts section excluded). Maybe it’s the hair but gee his movement and kicking reminds me of Travis Johnstone.

Just over a week to the big night. Really looking forward to seeing who JT goes for.
If anybody that doesn’t follow the under age stuff to much but wants to have a good look at the players linked to our picks I fully recommend watching the Vic Country V Metro game from earlier in the year.
It was the Champs decider and therefore the biggest game most of them had played in. Most of the players around are picks played. It was at Marvel so the camera work is pretty decent too.
It’s a cracking game if anybody has a couple of hours to kill or needs a sports fix.

New favorite for pick 1. Make him a demon! 😈

I don't really see the movement part. Trapper had a more punchy penetrating kick too. Reid does have great decision making and good skills though and wouldn't be the worst option at 9 if we get a ball winning mid at 5 too.

Their Phantom Draft from a week ago had Harvey Langford down as pick 6 and Jagga Smith going at pick 8 but their power ranking has Langford ranked at 11 and Smith at 1.

I know there’s a difference between draft picks and power rankings but can someone please make sense of this for me?

Jasper sees things slightly differently to other draft writers and some recruiters, accepts that his ranking won’t necessarily be reflected in club selections.

Murphy Reid is another with a wide range amongst draft writers (and presumably recruiters too).

What do you think of him, Chaser?

I note that Xavier Lindsay from Gippsland Power is rated quite highly in the ESPN's top 50.

This is what they say about him...

"Lindsay oozes class with ball in hand as an outside midfielder, with his silky left foot a lethal weapon in his arsenal. He's an outstanding leader and garners rave reviews from coaches about the standards he sets. It's difficult to see how Lindsay doesn't succeed at the next level - he has huge positional versatility with a speed-endurance blend to go with beautiful skills. In a midfield-heavy draft he should be considered firmly in that top group.

Best traits similar to: Josh Kelly"

Should the Demons consider him with pick #9 perhaps?

Quote from the AFL draft invitation, a bit of punctuation wouldn't go astray.

I find some of his/their player comparisons odd, but assume they have to run with current players.

The hand pass at 1:59 is fantastic. Definitely in the conversation at 9.

I think he does a pretty good job. Prefer him to his predecessor (Knightmare) who was contrarian for the sake of it sometimes.

I can see the rationale for his thinking in most cases, and always like it when there’s some difference in the opinions of the gurus.

Yes … if Travaglia is gone. Lindsay is class. Dees would love his classy disposal and he’d add “forward connection” (something we miss !!!)

Thanks Colm for the link - watched it and I’m still not sure who we will be taking but I have to say I really like the way Lalor goes about it

If we were looking for a tall forward I found it hard to split Simms, Armstrong and J Whitlock

Of the midfielders I was a bit underwhelmed by Ashcroft, Smith and Smilie

I thought Reid was clean and clever, Langford was good has the overhead string to his bow a little like Bont and Lindsay has good disposal by foot which we desperately want

I’m a fan of Tauru but it was just a game from him. Trevaglia looks to have some dash but personally I think others have more appeal

JT has a tough job 😀

Dave (aka 'Footy Stuff' on Youtube) has put out a guide to the draft pool:

Pies late mail … looking at Hamish Davis

They have picks in late 40s

cannot believe quality youngster like Davis lasts until pick 45ish

I had ranked around 25-30 in this draft

one of very best youngsters coming out of WA this year

Last weeks Coates League player of the week was Gippsland Power captain Xavier Lindsay.  Had 32 disposals in the midfield, with high efficiency, using his left foot deadly disposal.  He had the good mix of skill, smarts and athletic ability.  Lock him in as a future star.

And now he’s a Demon … welcome Xavier Lindsay

Hannaford my adopted draft son off to the land of the orange. Come back soon please.

Harrison Oliver is a Melbourne supporter. Hopefully he returns in 2 years time.

Harry Armstrong drifting out lol. Clubs actually realising he's not that good.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
