The MRO officer imo should be replaced immediately.

I just learned from 360, that the Umpire Reported Maynard immediately on the ground.

We have also learned that Christian, an ex Pies player, wanted no penalty and was overruled by the Top Brass at the AFL.

So despite a report on the ground by an umpire, close to the incident and the fact that a player had been knocked out for 2 minutes, with his career and health impacted, Christian attempted to whitewash the whole incident and not even have it tested by the Tribunal.

With the AFL heavily concerned with avoiding head injuries, the actions of Christian imo reek of conflict, ex old time footballer bias and looking after the old club and imo he should be replaced immediately.

He has been the subject of much criticism, in this role and it is time for a change now.

Even his total lack of support for the umpire, imo makes his position untenable. At the very least he should have referred it on for a full tribunal hearing.

Can this be corroborated?

What part?

Also note I have slightly edited the original post.

He should've been replaced years ago. What are his qualifications besides being an ex-player/commentator and current boofhead?

Caro Wilson was claiming a very similar story on offsiders on Sunday.

So that's two different media shows saying the same thing.

Christian’s sacking is long overdue. He has shown at the very least very poor judgement and questionable competence with many stinkers but this one tops the lot.

not denying your "facts" red, but here is the afl statement. doesn't this mean christian did grade and refer it to the tribunal.

can you explain the contradiction?

Quote

The Match Review Officer and executive general manager of football Laura Kane graded the incident as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact, drawing a minimum three-match ban and means Maynard's season could be over.

Several media sources have stated it.

He was overruled.

The wording was from both in the charge, but it was done from above.

red, i agree about christian's days are long overdue, but i would still like to see some corroboration that christian wanted no charge.  the fact that the afl has not put out a clarification statement in light of the various media claims, does seem to indicate it might be true. but.

such a devious cesspit, the afl

Never should have been appointed...not fit for purpose... Just a job for a BOY

Caro has said it, Robbo said it tonight and I have seen/heard it said elsewhere.

Robbo said clearly that the MRO said he had no case to answer and Laura Kane and the AFL said he did and overruled him.

This has not been disputed by the AFL or anyone in the media, so it’s likely the case.

Stated by Gary Lyon as well.

i know and it is so frustrating

but i'm old fashioned and just like a bit of truth, transparency and honesty, especially from the custodians of our game

i live in despondent hope

We all do. But im not overly hopeful.

The game's rigged

There seems to be a narrative change to this whole saga. The majority of AFL supporters and commentators were in Maynard’s corner over the weekend, to leaks coming out of the AFL community pushing the right agenda to suspend Maynard for many weeks. Other than Robbo, the comments and leaks are coming from respected AFL staff, coaches and commentators.

if this story about Christian is true, he deserves to be sacrificed.

I love the clubs performance in all this too. No ‘Vitriol’ and emotional statements. Just letting the AFL world Gus is “Not doing well”.  Of course he is not doing well!

Surely the MRO not being trusted with a decision and being immediately overruled should be enough for him to be sacked

Christian - for crimes against the AFL, and general incompetence, you are sentenced to 5 years out of the game. The MRO will be disbanded, to be replaced by the psychic octopus from the World Cup

sacrificed is way too nice a way of putting it.  IF, emphasis on IF, it is true that he did not support a sanction then he should not be sacrificed as you put it, he should be well and truly run out of all things pertaining to AFL.. It would be a bloody disgrace, but on par with many AFL 'decisions'.

Completely agree RL. To make that call himself shows a severe lack of competence and/or biased.

It was said on couch that he would put his job on the line and it took 5 hours of discussion to reach a compromise.

I highly doubt he will be there next year.

Edited by Gawndy the Great

A lot of people seem to have missed that the umpire, who sees thousands of ‘football acts’ a week, and was the closest official to the incident, immediately reported Maynard.

The bloke whose job it is to oversee the rules was 10 metres away and reported him. That tells you everything.

I think the MRO was going to be overhauled anyway, and this will give them the impetus to do it. I’d be shocked if Christian is in that role next year.

The thing about an old boys club is you don't even need to make the call.

I think the fact Laura Kane’s name is included in the statement is telling and add to that it took hours, until after the nightly News opportunities for a decision to be announced. I suspect Laura put up a very strong and long argument for the decision against significant opposition from the usual old guard.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
