I don’t share the angst that many others feel about our representation in the squad. In fact, I think it is a testament to how even we have been all year.

Trac’s a walk up and Viney IMO can get a spot over Neale and other mids whose names seem to get them into the conversation before their form.

There are still some pretty off putting selections. Gawn hasn’t been the best ruck this year but he’s been significantly better than Jackson. Cripps shouldn’t be in the squad. Taranto clearly should be.

Also from Melbourne, most have suggested May is the one most stiff to miss out but I’d argue Rivers. If Mason Redman can get a squad spot Rivers can too.

So every team gets at least one player in? Charity

Luke Jackson should get a participation ribbon

Tell me again how many marks he took in the early part of the season?

Seems to me that the AA judges have been told to look at the season in isolation and in doing so have over compensated by ommiting players with great records who had slightly down years by their lofty standards.

Gawn and May are locks if you were picking a team

Look I don't hate it that we only have 2 in a 44 man squad I just think it's pathetic that's all. Trent Rivers, Jake Lever, Steven May, Bayley Fritsch 11th in goals per game despite missing 6 games.

Have fun!

What a joke.

Hawks 16th, Freo 14th, Bombers 11th and Dogs 9th all with 3 players in the All Australian Squad.

Giants, Saints, Blues in the 8, not top 4 all with 3 players in the All Australian Squad.

Swans just scraped into the finals in 8th and Crows finishing 10th with 2 players in the All Australian Squad.

Demons in the top 4 all season, second best percentage, one game off 2nd with just 2 players in the All Australian Squad.

Go Dees win the flag and make the All Australian selectors look like rank amateurs!!!!!!!!

Who's Mason Redman?

Think he missed the first third of the season.

Im assuming there is a games played criteria?

Minimum 16 games to qualify. He missed that by one.

Is there anyone who seriously thinks we would have had a better season if Max had left the club and Jackson had stayed?

Max's leadership qualities alone elevate him above any other ruckman in the competition. And it did not help him that the partnership with Grundy did not work out well through no fault of the players concerned.

I can understand Clarry being left out. He missed a fair chunk of the season and is still not quite back to his best after returning. Otherwise he would have been a certainty.

What we do have is an even spread of elite talent (to mention only May, Lever, Gawn, Oliver, Petracca and even Fritsch) across the board, which is a key to the more important issue of winning premierships.

So Jackson is a better ruckman that Gawn this year: it seems to me that clowns and men with limited mental capacity rule the world these days.

Sean Darcy, his fellow clubman, is a better ruckman than Jackson.

Every single year, without fail:

1.  Player X (from my club) should have been selected.

2.  Player Y (from another club) doesn't deserve his selection.

3.  The selectors don't have any idea.

4.  The selectors hate my club.

Rinse and repeat.

If Viney doesn't make the 22 that tells you all you need to know about these buffoons. Has had a stellar year, easily our most consistent and influential player, I'll be stunned if he doesn't take home the Bluey.

I have Tracc and Vines being equal 1ST . Stand by for a shock... Lachie Hunter to finish 4th or 5th in Bluey IMV

Absolutely!

I find the whole thing incredibly immature and a bit sad really. To top it off, the media just stoke the partisanship and lack of objectivity.

Just looking at supercoach / ranking points (I know grain of salt with champion data…) but looks like Rory Laird, Tim Taranto, Andrew Brayshaw and Josh Dunkley are a bit stiff not to make the squad.
Not surprised other Dees were overlooked - true wingers aren’t sexy enough, defenders need midfieldesque stats (or be named Harris), and only forwards with large bags are picked. We have a good spread across all lines.

Then for some of those who did make the squad the stats paint a different picture (one where the selectors must have had their captains pick).
De Goey only played 18 games, ranked 58th for average score. Only had 4 matches over 120 points (my marker for a good midfield game).
Josh Daicos played all 23, ranked 46th for average score and 26th overall. Only 5 matches over 120 points.
Jai Newcombe played 22, 48th rank for average and 39th overall with 2 games over 120.
Dustin Martin played 20, ranked 66th for average score, 94th overall and only 3 matches over 120.
Patrick Cripps played 21, ranked 53rd for average, 60th overall and 3 matches over 120.

To contrast the above with Petracca - played 23, avg points 4th, overall points 3rd and 11 matches over 120. Bontempelli - played 23, avg 1st, overall 1st and 15 over 120.
Viney played 22, avg 43rd, overall 33rd and 5 matches over 120.
Dunkley played 21, avg 10th, overall 20th and 8 matches over 120.
Laird played 22, avg 5th, overall 7th and 10 matches over 120.

The AA selectors are just plain old idiots. Favoritism and recency bias all plague the selectors judgements.

Having said that, i dont think any of our players have had an AA level performance besides Trac. Viney was solid as always, but the AA midfield is always determined on offensive attributes as opposed to raw inside and defensive pressure acts etc so would really doubt Viney gets through to the 22.

Oliver was out for half the year, who is usually a walk in. Gawn was played out of position for half the year and missed a month of footy. May and Lever were solid but not outstanding.

The ladder leaders will always get plaudits....little do people realize how close in fact the top 4 teams are with how prominent the number of games decided by less than a goal feature in their H&A record.

Congrats Trac, but someone like Zach Merrett ahead of Viney? Are you [censored] kidding me?

I have to laugh that our list has been good enough to finish in the top 4 three years running, and win a flag, but it’s apparently not good enough to get more than one AA selection.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
