@WalkingCivilWar a dees supporter behind me yesterday referred to mcvee as “knuckles”. Never heard this before. Do you know the background to this nickname?

He was given the nickname by Mark Brayshaw (Angus Dad) because he looked and reminded him of Craig Sholl who use to play at North.

Sholl's nickname at North was "Knuckles"

I’m glad you refer to him as “Nibbla” since we recently asked him if he prefers Nibbler or Nibbla. He said defs Nibbla because he’s from SA. 🤷‍♀️

I heard some Demons fans yesterday referring to him as "Weasel", but in a nice way.

First time I've heard that one.

Used it well but defensively was poor.

A bewildering call to sub Schache on for Tomlinson. I understand they didn’t wanna not use him, but FMD we are lucky it didn’t cost us.

Tomlinson played well. Schache has no urgency.

I think it was more in reponse to Hawthorn subbing a tall for a small. Tommo our slowest/most lumbering defender just wasn't needed any more.

Agree re: Shache

The reason behind “Knuckles” has been explained above. It’s actually very widely used so I’m surprised you’ve not heard ‘til yesterday.

On the subject of nicknames, Tommy Sparrow insists on being called “Spaz” which kinda feels wrong, yelling out, “Go Spaz!” But his mum says it’s been his nickname for a long time and he loves it.

Tools at your disposal has to be part of it too. Mitchell doesn’t have the luxury of a starting midfield of Oliver, Petracca and Viney that Goody has. It would be obviously wasteful if we played a completely negative player in our midfield. Hawthorn just did what they needed to have the best shot at winning. I don’t mind it, but I’d definitely prefer to be in our position than theirs.

Hawthorn won the stoppages and all the clearance stats

Just sayin....

That's so unfair.

He sometimes posts after 'disappointing' wins over any team outside the top 4 (or even teams on top of the ladder - see the posts about our win over the flu ridden, injury depleted, having an off day, supposedly 'great' pies and how poor it was to let them have a sniff very late).

Probably had one drafted and ready to go 10 mins in the last quarter ('can't win a flag if we can't beat a team in 16th convincingly at this stage of the season.....').

Must have been gutted by our late run of goals.

Hard, but not impossible ('i suppose you're thrilled by a win over a tired 16th placed team missing their three best players') to turn a five goal win into proof the dees aren't a premiership threat.

We all call him Spaz in my family. Tommy played his most mature game for the club yesterday I reckon. His third quarter in particular was really, really strong.

Nice to meet you yesterday WCW! Not sure if you remember, but I said gday to you out on the ground. The banner looked magnificent

Not sure I remember??? It was yesterday…. I’m not 90 years old!!! 😂

I do remember, we chatted very briefly before I rushed back down the race and what struck me most was: how the hell did you get to go out on the ground in the first place?! Methinks the fact you were wearing a suit and tie might have something to do with it. 🤔

What about poor old Shazza (Nibbla’s mum) who often sits with us. The first time she heard everyone yelling out “Dogga” to our former #6, she misheard and thought it was “Donga.” Nobody ever corrected her because it was never not funny to hear her screaming, “GO DONGA!” 😂

Supporters want some sort of certainty even when there is none! None of us know whether we are real contenders or pretenders like last year.

The whole gammut of emotions are on offer!

Locking in a top four position is good but guarantees you nothing.

It guarantees you a second chance if you stuff up in week 1

I’m happy if she keeps yelling that out now 😁

He’s not Robinson Crusoe either. The ‘Top 4 on the line’ wet pants Brigade all seem to have slept right through the win.

A good win against a team that has improved markedly over the season.  Mitchell is an outstanding young coach.  Hawthorn have some excellent players and as maddening as it is, they will become a very good team quite quickly.  We did what we needed to do.  Our defence, in particular Lever, Rivers and McVee were outstanding.  No great influence from Petracca and Oliver and nothing at all from Pickett only enhances the win.  I wish Goodwin had let the Maginess question go through to the keeper.  His response was churlish.  The game has a place for everyone and taggers have been around for a long time.  Oliver was beaten, accept it and be better next time.  Nicks' presser last night was the template for class under pressure.

Churlish perhaps, but satisfying all the same

Happy to win by 27 against my most hated club but thought we were just ok yesterday.

The win was pleasing given Petracca had a shocker, Oliver had his least impact for a long time and Kossie was hopeless.

I thought we lost centre clearance and that was a key source of goals for Hawthorn.

Tomlinson looks too slow and is a real worry in September. While Lever is better with another key defender, the defence looked at sea at times when the ball came in quickly.

Oliver looks like a player who lacks confidence and touch and is not looking to take territory. He is playing like he played five years ago, looking to handball and not bursting forward. We need him to get back to exploding forward in the stoppages.

Smith is a very good player and we can forget using him as the sub. He competes in the air and then is first to fight for it on the ground. I prefer him forward but he is great at being able to switch around and we might need him to go back if TMac earns his way into the side.

Left field how about MacDonald at CHB at Smith forward

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
