What chance do you give us of beating Hawthorn? And do you think we genuinely have no chance of beating Sydney?

It’ll come down to selection for me, but if Grundy goes out I think we’re probably 80-20 chance. It’ll lower if he stays in. Max needs to go solo.

Swans, we’re probably 40-60. We lost our last game at the SCG to a last placed Collingwood in 2021. Plus it always seems to rain at the SCG.

Yes. Clearly.

We're doing enough to win games, as a side with a plethora of talent in their prime should be.

But our effort and application and skill execution during games is all over the place.

Come 'Jimmy'...one week we lack talent on the list now we have a plethora.

Which is it?

Don’t worry about it. Jimmy already told me the Pies have won the flag. Why are we even talking footy when we can talk draft picks?

He really is the Kane Cornes of Demonland...

If they had won yesterday they probably would lose to  the Hawks next week.

Straight sets coming up again

It's the AFL ' s fault

Of course it's been overstated.

Haven't you been watching?

Guaranteed to  lose the ones they could/ should win to secure their position .

How relevant do you reckon a game two and a half seasons ago against different opposition will be to our upcoming fixture against Sydney?

It's great that a lot of people haven't given up but sometimes this place is just a big echo chamber with people calling out this place for the very behaviour they are guilty of 90% of the time. I've been one of these in the past too.

I'm actually over it and don't need to be on here anymore.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and by providing it you need to expect that you may get pushback or feedback or disagreement. So long as it’s done respectfully, there is nothing wrong with that.

This is after all, a discussion forum, and in every discussion and conversation there are sides.

And people are also entitled to change their mind, have a (respectful) meltdown because they’re sad their team lost, and have a sook when things aren’t going the way they hoped.

Some days are better on here than others. I hope you stick around as you’re a really good poster. But you have to do what feels right. We don’t bring toxicity to our lives. We are peaceful kings and queens!

Blues are playing their best footy and they were good.  It was that 5 minutes in the 4th where we let them kick 3 quick ones that separated the two sides.  That was the difference across the whole game.  We almost got it back and slightly straighter kicking we would have had it.  But we didn't.

Silly billies.

It's impossible to talk sense on here.

I've never doubted the talent on the list. I've said we need attribute diversity and a better mix of players. Do you see the difference. Talent vs attribute diversity. Don't know how many more times I need to say that before it sticks.

I've also never stated that Collingwood would win the flag, but cool.

Continue on in your lovely echo chamber you two.

If you think the list isn't right that's fair.

Attribute diversity, give me a break.

I know our list has holes, blind Freddy can see that.

All AFL lists have holes, it's in the nature of the salary cap.

I reckon you have some good points but you often want to couch them in such a smart a...way that you don't get taken seriously.

I'll finish with a question.

Do you think we can win a flag this season?

I don't think that's fair. Kane Cornes really rates us.

Could this be the biggest missed opportunity by a club not to win multiple flags with the current mids, defence & rucks? Unfortunately our fwds succumbed to injuries with Fritsch , Tmac dogged with foot issues & brown knee is shot. Grundy experiment has failed and question the brains trust who have done a great job in list mgr thus far, hate to say but if we finish 4th we may be out in straight sets again

The way I see it, we still haven’t reached our full potential in those matches but have shown glimpses of those gears and what they can deliver. I’m confident we’ve got the fitness to use those gears come September this year.

My biggest fear is a wet September 😬

Finishing 4th could well be our best finishing spot. A game at home against Collingwood without Daicos and Moore underdone, I would definitely back us in. We win that, we get a week off and host Lions or Port at the MCG in a preliminary final. Sounds the best path to me.

I’m saying that, the loser of a Collingwood v Melbourne (1 v 4) clash could have difficulties, as they’ll likely play Carlton at the MCG in a semi, and if they win that, Lions or Port interstate.

9 hours ago, At the break of Gawn said:

That’s true. However, since the new finals system, no team has won it from 4th. It’s the top 3 or nothing. Which means we need to win our last 2. A month ago our last 2 looked like a walk in the park, now both are danger games where if we don’t bring our A game we’ll fall short.

We could however make history

We've literally played Sydney in Sydney once in 6 years and we won. What made you say we rarely beat Sydney in Sydney?

Well clearly we haven’t beaten them in Sydney the other 5 years 🤗🤗🙄🙄

I’m holding my breath for team selection this week. Grundy again this week will be a huge mistake for our forward mix.

Grundy does not cut it as a forward Move on Melbourne

Look, I know coming into this round we had won 5 on the trot, but we haven’t played anywhere near as convincingly as some would say. Let’s break down those 5 wins:

1. Saints @ Marvel

Saints lost 3 players in game and were always going to run out of legs. We even almost got overrun in that last qtr. Just a win in my book.

2. Lions @ MCG

Despite a blistering first qtr and an awesome last 7 minutes, the Lions looked the far better side and torched us with their ball movement. We were lucky to get the win in the end.

3. Adelaide @ MCG

Good first 3 qtrs against a decent side but we conceded 7 goals in a row in the last qtr and almost got overrun.

4. Richmond @ MCG

Our best win I think but Richmond (who’s firmly a bottom 8 side) got up by 20pts in the 3rd qtr and made our defence look really shaky with quick forward entries.

5. North @ BA

I know the second half was easy going but to let a team as bad as that to get up by 30pts is just worrying in itself. I get the whole not switched on thing, but we got jumped again last night.

I feel like if we’re a genuine shot at the flag this year we really need to see two really strong performances against the Hawks and Swans.

In some ways, last night’s loss might be a blessing because there’s so much in our game that we still need to get right and hopefully it spurs on Goodwin to make those final tweaks to get us there.

No, overly critical, beat pies Lions unlucky against Power and Carlton, always different ways of looking at things

This competition has been so so close. So many finals like games this year and so many games decided by a goal or less. Carlton are red hot right now and we lost by a fingertip. We're a huge chance this year but there are many other desperate teams too.

Currently the MFC are a very good team and have been for a few years and are capable of defeating any other team, the problem at the moment is that at least two thirds of the competition are also good to very good sides who are also capable of defeating other team, losses are going to occur.

Thanks Jaded. Of course I'll stick around I'd just had enough last night and some of the non footy related smut was too much for me.

I was also told yesterday that my relationship with footy was getting unhealthy and having an effect on people close. Bit embarrassing to go into more detail here.

I will say that there's also people one here that get unfairly brushed with the negative tag when really a lot of them are very well rounded footy fans.

Good to hear you’ll stick around.

I can be quite negative but I’ve been trying to find the positives more often because I’m reminded regularly how bad we used to be and how I longed for the days when we were a contender!

I can be too and love being the 'realist'. Sometimes you wonder where it gets you being like that all the time though.

We've got as good a chance as any and if we get a few things right we'll be in the mix. Most other teams have their slight issues as well.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
