I’ve enjoyed the fact that we’ve largely been flying under the radar despite the fact we’re 2nd on the ladder. After we take the choccies tonight the spotlight will well and truly be on. Games like this are a great tune up for finals, bring it on.

My niggling sixth sense keeps telling me that after the win against Blue Goo tonight, we will rage in the finals to our sheer delight and this will be achieved by something up-the-sleeve that we so far have not considered ... as if we had a secret weapon or change under construction that is going to rip predictable opposition strategies to pieces. Hence, flying under the radar is potentially a wonderful thing. 

 

We had zero cohesion for the first half last week. Best be switched on and on the same page from the first bounce or we’ll get smashed and won’t come back like we did against North.

    I think it’s fair to suggest that our players won’t be going to this game thinking Carlton are the easy beats North are.

    Why does Grundy playing worry me ?

    To beat carlton will put a real dampener on them for the rest of the year. That would be a real bonus.

    Yup, they've got some good talent back there and their system has been excellent recently.    Would like to take some contested marks/win contested ground ball inside 50 early to unsettle them.  Similar to how our defenders are put under pressure at times.   Would be shocked if it's a shoot out. 

    The medias focus tonight will no doubt be on what Grundy does and if it works.

    I hope it does work & Grundy snags a few and max can have more of a rest.

    Yes I think a low scoring boring game suits us at present.

    Accuracy on goal will be a heavy determinant methinks

    blues have kicked 10,14,21(against eagles),18 and 14

    Melbournes have been 13,1414,16and 12. 
    that’s me taking out Pettys goals and no fritsch. Not to bad to me

    Either way hope you’re right and goes our way!

    A matildas and Dees win would top off a good Saturday night for me.

    Last encounter entailed strong backlines  and low scores from both teams.

    I hope Milk is switched on today and our smalls continue on their merry way.

    Perhaps Trac to go into the fwd mix again.

    Grundy worries me as a fwd. Many including myself have touted his ability to bring the ball to ground. But a forward s job is to kick goals. I guess he's last man standing at this point in time if we are all honest. I hope he proves me wrong and kicks four.

    This game is crunch time. It will show everybody our worth (or not) It is by far our biggest test yet.

    If we win convincingly I have no doubts we will have red hot go at the flag and everybody will be put on notice that the Dees are coming.

    I feel we’re going to choke them tonight, Dees by 38… and hopefully choke some of their supporters too.

    Sometimes I need to remind myself to enjoy the moment we are in as a football club. What an amazing point in time where we can go about our Saturday knowing we are one of the premiership favourites going into a blockbuster on Saturday night. During those endless dark years, these are the times I use to dream about. We are going to look back in years to come and be in awe at some of the talent we have. Gawn, Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Pickett, May, Lever, Brayshaw and co. 

    Don't think too far ahead, enjoy the day, enjoy the night and sit back and watch our players give it all. No matter the result, we are going into finals with a double chance. Go Dees!

    Fully agree. I think we have already served notice that we are coming and a second fave for a flag. Losing will relegate us back to third or fourth and in the mix with a few others. Carlton fans arguing that a win for them will make them the real deal. A win for us will help cement second and relegate those pesky blues to fight with a number of others to play finals. Hopefully the players respond to the pressure of this game result and are on from the first bounce. I think Oliver back in will bring a real sense of energy and confidence.

    I suggested this last Monday and was howled down. It makes sense.

    There’s a fair bit of shame and self loathing from Dees fans about our crowds, probably stemming from the sledging we cop on socials from halfwit oppo fans who don’t do math good and also only watch on tv where they can’t see a packed MCC and Olympic stand.

    Per the tables below, we’re 5th for overall average match attendance so far this year, and 4th for average home attendance (including whatever handful we got at Alice), in line with the last couple of years.

    Our numbers are good, don’t let any peabrain tell you different (especially hawkers who still think it’s 2015).

    When the pressure was high against us last week, we folded. Hope they did some restructuring and have a plan when they come at us.

    A six day break with travel, is not optimal. Though, being back on the "G" is.

    Tracca and Vines to flourish. Clarry, back with quick and clean hands, backline support and hopefully has some goals assist with a few class kicks. 

    Wonder what the mids look like, especially where Brayshaw plays.

    Some perfect ball movement and hitting the mark, would be great to see, as we polish our game.

    Max is simply a much better rman. His recent  performance have been outstanding. I don't think they will tinker with something working so well.

    The other metric is crowd size in relation to membership numbers.

    So only 54k turning up to a tigers  home game againsy the dees is worse than if 54k turning up to a dees home game because they have so many more members.

    I'd argue, in addition to the social media stuff influencing dees fans perception of our preparedness to turn up to the footy, a big factor in this weird enduring myth Is the media has been driving this myth as long as I can remember.

    A perfect example of the impact on the public perception when the footy media push false and/or misleading narratives.

    Even dees fan buy into the dees fans don’t turn up myth.

    Best of many things. Art, eating, festivals, day trips, walking around the parks, rivers and creeks, visually beautiful, architectural highlights, could keep going.

    That's rubbish.  I lived in San Franscisco for 3 years and the drug and homeless problem there is far, far worse than in Melbourne.  There is nothing comparable to the Tenderloin in Melbourne.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season.
