Mooney did at least take the ground, long enough to be hip-and-shouldered by Koutafides and sold a dummy by Silvagni. Brushed shoulders with the greats, he did. Oh, and gave away a free kick. So, technically, you could say Jordon had a better game than Mooney.

Heh, there's a funny coincidence; both Byron and Kysaiah Pickett played in an early-career premiership alongside a player who got no disposals in the game.

Also coincidental - Pickett's 2-kick 2-handball game in the winning 2004 prelim final is exactly the same as Pickett's 2-kick 2-handball stats from the winning 2021 grand final.

Now, a better coincidence would be 'winning a Norm Smith medal in a win over the reigning premiers after your club has been knocked out of finals two seasons in a row despite top-4 finishes.'

    Reflecting on Jordon's role at Sydney - he'll be a reliable presence in a midfield that already has quite a bit of flair and power. In a way it is the exact reverse of his scenario at Melbourne where he was 'just another' solid midfield player in a team that was in need of some dynamism. That perspective has been shown in our recruiting and drafting choices, too.

    Sparrow is a totally different player to JJ. He is much more dynamic, much more damaging with his ball use, and has a good burst of speed. JJ lacks those things, which made him surplus to our needs. Accumulating possessions in our midfield is not a valued skill when you have the likes of Clarry and Viney getting 30+ touches a week every week.

    I wish JJ the absolute best at Sydney. He is a lovely, hard working kid and I totally get why he left.

    Sparrow can definitely roost a ball off minimal steps. Love that about him.

    Jordon's probably the more reliable player in terms of getting a solid 20 touches a game but Sparrow has more upside.

    Sydney are absolutely excited to have JJ on board. Kinnear Beatson was extremely bullish on what he can provide when interviewed post trade week.

    Jordon is no longer at the club because he has no elite qualities, and could only win 11 possessions in consecutive games as a full time midfielder in rounds 19 and 20.

    His semi final effort was absolutely putrid. Good luck to him, but we can do much better.

    Sparrow is a tease at present. He has many of the tools needed to become a really good player, other than speed, but is also prone to going missing for long periods. I suspect he would benefit from serious competition for his spot, and potentially the occasional game at Casey. At the moment he seems happy to coast along and be an average player.

    Look, I don't see much upside in Jordon from a skill set point of view, but let's not pretend that Sparrow is much better by foot. Both just as poor as one another.

    Whilst Sparrow has more penetration and distance in his foot skills, he also had some horrendous turnover by foot in some games. He's not much different to how Brent Moloney was.

    To be honest, I see more upside in Taj Woewodin then I do in Sparrow and Jordon.

    Like you, I am also hoping Laurie comes on as a mid/forward because he could really add to the mix with his skill set and agility.

    Jordon is no longer at the club because he was a free agent and was a wanted player at other clubs. At right price and circumstances the MFC would have kept him.

    Sparrow is a brute of a midfielder who can shrug a tackle and has a penetrating leg on him.

    Nothing against JJ but he is a very vanilla type midfielder.

    Wish him nothing but the best at the swans but not against us obviously.

    I dont needs the stats to tell me that Sparrow is a better player than JJ with more weapons and scope for improvement.

    Apparently played well in todays scratch match. Could well be this years Bedford.

    Goody and co just haven’t been able to convince young fringe players to stay. They’ve been given contracts, opportunity and the chance to go to good clubs in a great city, but it’s disappointing.

    I don’t have any issues with the way guys weren’t picked for certain games. You can’t do selection via hindsight. JJ got a good run in 2022 and didn’t really do anything to suggest he had to stick in the side permanently last year.

    I have some issue that players weren’t convinced to stay with others moved out to accomodate them. And I guess in JJ’s case I’m not over the moon about Hunter taking his spot and being no better.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

      Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
