Demonland 74,431 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 JJ deserves some love and at the time of posting he hasn't re-signed with the club. Jordon's contract is set to expire at the end of 2023 and the midfielder is eligible for free agency given he was delisted and re-signed at the end of 2020. The Demons have re-signed ten players so far, with eight other players coming off contract at the end of 2023. Given his limited chances to break into the side no one would begrudge him looking for more opportunities elsewhere. He is too good for VFL footy and places in the Demon's star studded midfield are limited. Clayton Oliver's absence with a hamstring injury and Christian Petracca's move to the forward line on a part time basis have afforded JJ more opportunities to show his wares and he has relished that opportunity and shown he is more than capable in fulfilling a midfield role. Essendon, the Gold Coast and now Sydney are reportedly interested in securing JJ's services. Hopefully he re-signs with the Demons. 7 1 3 Quote
dazzledavey36 56,334 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 He'd absolutely thrive at Sydney. Type of player Longmire loves. 5 Quote
Hawny for Gawny 465 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 I reckon it depends on how the rest of the season, if he can keep his spot I can see him resigning but if he gets booted out again once clarry comes back I think he leaves. 2 2 Quote

A lot of competition for these spots. We can't keep them all. 7 1 Quote
adonski 13,267 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 (edited) I'd leave if was him, too many 'undroppables' ahead of him from a Goodwin perspective Edited July 19, 2023 by adonski 3 1 1 Quote

Jaded No More 68,976 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 The only way he stays in as a permanent fixture is as an inside mid. The only way that happens is if we are committed for Trac to play predominantly forward in the years to come. This could well happen when Clarry finally comes back from his full hamstring amputation. 4 1 1 Quote
darkhorse72 1,943 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 A potentially great player for the club, but best in 1 position that is really crowded at the moment. I know we want to keep him, but is it the best thing for his personal career. At this stage I would say no. Being out of contract I dont know if we would get his real value if he decides to leave. 4 Quote
Colm 2,204 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Could understand him leaving if he’s offered regular game time at another club. Would probably a good career move for him. Would we be entitled to anything by way of compensation? Hopefully with 3 clubs interested in him it drives his contract value up which might help. 2 Quote
Diamond_Jim 12,773 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 He's number 1 on the depth list at present. How do you retain such a player? The same conundrum as Bedford/Chandler at the end of last season. 3 Quote

We're/you're never going to get fair market value all the time as players exit. We can only view it truly i feel as a holistic exercise... i.e...overall...are we better off or not ...across all in an outs of a season. I think you strike at the heart of the matter... what's best for James. All the besr to the lad ...here...or elsewhere... 4 1 Quote
Gorgoroth 13,220 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 The selectors have made it know to JJ how well they rate him. I’d be so surprised if he stayed with us. If I was him I’d leave, and I’ve said before I would have left after been left on the bench the whole game in the GF even more so after Harmes offered to be subbed out. 5 Quote
In Harmes Way 7,869 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 We need 26-30 really good players to win a flag, losing JJ would be a massive mistake. He was next cab off the rank in our winning GF team. Our club has been brilliant at identification and attraction of talent, if they can capably navigate retention of top drawer depth then we’re in very good shape 5 Quote
DeeZone 10,590 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Love JJ has skill, height and endurance he would fit straight in with most sides, I hope he stays but if he goes I hope he goes to a team in finals contention.!!! 2 Quote

Still rather keep him because he knows our system, however if he goes we will still have one of the best midfield in the game 3 Quote
Willmoy1947 4,261 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Hang on to JJ he gives his all in a hard position and is super fit and cherry ripe. I would be looking at others and i think Moniz Wakefield should be coaxed to stay too. 1 Quote

He's an FA, so the mistake wouldn't be ours. There are only so many players that can fit into 22/23. 9 Quote
Deeko2 865 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 If he picks up a nice deal somewhere else with a decent term and $$$, will we get compensation for him? I'm a fan of the kid but surely he has to go if he wants more game time. 2 Quote
Viney Vidi Vici 148 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 I would think his skills are replaceable really, but the 2024 depth would be of concern to the dees. If that happens we'd likely have to find another depth player. After JJ I'm not sure what our next inside mid would be, James Harmes and who? Dunstan won't get a run and the other starting miss in the Vfl are scorpions players. Interesting one. but long and short, go get a game bud. 1 Quote
DistrACTION Jackson 10,730 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 We can easily look at other FAs to cover him if he leaves, Matt Crouch and Paddy Dow come to mind as similar players. Let's not forget we will be bringing in at a minimum a top 10 pick this year, potentially 2 if we trade with GC. 1 Quote
CatFishPig 465 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 If he goes I hope North offer him a whopper and we get first round compo 2 Quote

Agreed Adam, but this is the pointy end of the retention dilemma - he is the 23rd/24th player and we’ve got to have ongoing focus on looking after our best depth or we become weaker as a result. Mistake might not be quite the right descriptor, but we need JJ to feel in an ongoing sense that the FD’s development of him and his opportunities to play are better than a full time role in an inferior team. 3 Quote
dl4e 5,851 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 If he decides to go then don't deal with Essendon. They are absolute [censored] to deal with in trade negotiations. I hope he stays. 1 1 Quote
