POSTGAME: Rd 18 vs Brisbane

That win puts out almost round two comeback into perspective.

They had a plethora of excuses.

Well last night put those to silence

Lions don't finish strongly and they can't win at the G. Good luck if you ever make a granny.

He he.

Took my wife to her first game in 4 years (2 kids later). We were THIS close to catching an early train home (our bedtime is usually 9:30/10pm 😂) but decided to wait and see. The 4 goal margin always felt reachable but unlikely. Well done All!!!! Absolutely stoked.

That Viney goal.. My word!

There are people out there that think the Lions should have won by 7 goals and choked that result. I just utterly refute that because we ran out every quarter better after the 1st. And both clubs won 2 quarters each in totality.

We had some chances to bring the margin back to even within a few minutes of the last, and missed them. Before reigning back the margin. And they had chances to put the game beyond reach in the last.

Seems to me quite an even split of momentum swings.

I see what your saying.

Certainly agree the result was not solely due to the Lions choking.

Dees deserve plenty of credit for their fitness, determination and composure in the last 15 minutes. Lions deserve credit for unpicking our defence for two quarters.

Can  Fritta and Milk both play in the same fwd line?

I think so.

When Melksham was lining up for his first goal from the boundary line with the clock against us, I thought he was fluffing around too long.

But so essential to take ones time and slot it. Ice cold blood on his veins

And channel 7 ( from Sydney TV this morning) claimed in the narrative that Brisbane should have been paid the mark and win the game. Wouldn't know the rules/interpretations not being a mark and/or around the neck. Nuff Nuff

Sydney tv no nothing about footy. Lever basically had the ball and dickwood took it off him to try and claim the mark. What a joke.

Come on over Gonz, it’s really fun in here. There’s a lady in the front row of M52, she’s been there for years and always tries to get the crowd going after each goal. Her catch cry is ‘ Make Some Noise’

This lady went to a whole new level of commitment last night. She made a stack of these laminated cards and handed them to as many people as she could in the whole of M52.

I've sat near the cheer squad before and it's great but I hate sitting behind the goals ground level.

Some really iconic pivotal moments from this game.

Max sky high goal late in the third.

Kozzies third goal.

Rivers barging through the middle.

Vineys snatch and goal.

Jake the snakes two goals.

Levers mark.

👍🏻

Gus putting his body on the line under a hospital kick or two

Woe doing the same in a ground ball contest on the member's flank early in the last to hold up play and keep the ball near our arc.  He was pile driven under two or three players.

Kozzy digging out the HB to Tracc for his clutch goal out of the pack late in the third

Tracc doing the same for Kozzy shortly after (with a clearance from someone...will need to watch the replay).

Max for excellent body work and  getting the tap down that eventuated in one of those goals to Tracc or Kozzy.

Kozzy for some lovely body work on his opponent keeping him away from the drop when the high kick came in, allowing Melk to jump, take the clutch mark & goal.

Lingers efforts in and under late in the game to keep the ball locked in.

Jordan's strength over the ball and distribution by hand in the last quarter

Bowser's work ethic to run back on a number of occasions as the QB with a handy intercept or two deep in defence so late in the match.  His running ability is up there with the best.

Nibbler's will to get to as many contests as possible and impact from about half way through the third.  Especially through the middle to offer options and link ups in the last quarter.

His folllow up tackling and attempt to recover the pill after pulling a HB to Viney on the square, realising he was about to sell him into trouble, was immense.

My wife had the laptop last night, watching some carp on Netflix, so I finally get a chance this morning to do the important thing - get onto Demonland!

There is a part of me that still cannot believe we won that.

We are a very mentally tough team. To be totally beaten up for 2 quarters, and looking unlikely to break the game open, only to emerge in the 4th quarter with a fire in the belly. Viney and Rivers were raging bulls in the last quarter and set the tone.

Good to see Kozzie much closer to his best. I cannot stress how important he is.

Leave Trac playing 60% forward, and leave Brayshaw in the middle. Love this setup. Trace kicking for goal when he is not exhausted from midfield running makes his set shots soooo much better.

I was wrong - Melksham and Smith in the same 23 CAN work. Smith was very important in the last quarter and showed a real swing man/utility vibe.

Our backline was beaten for much of the night. That doesn't happen often.

Lions half back line murdered us, and we had no answer until we began wining the ball and denying them freedom in the last quarter.

BBB and JVR - not great games but they presented time and time again and created opportunity after opportunity.

Max - wow!

Taj - that is an epic first goal.

And lastly, our coach, Goody. Well done. Once again at the press conference, he showed his stubborn self belief in his program, his players and his plan. I know many Demonlanders get frustrated with his seeming lack of flexibility but I am not one of them. Our bad patches and losses are NOT about game plan, coaching box lethargy, lack of vision etc...

Sure is.  A good recent example was (listening to ABC driving home last night) Kelli Underwood bringing it up in the context that she said Steven May was the only player not to run up to Melksham to congratulate him on that final goal.

Pathetic Kelli. Just a talking head .  Malthouse to his credit batted away the insinuation.

They just make stuff up. I was at the game and May gave Melky a big hug at the end of the game.

Haven't read this thread yet, was up till the wee hours watching the replay after seeing probably the second greatest escape this club has engineered (after Rd 23 Geelong 2021!)

But I just wanted to say how disgraceful and disgusting was the umpiring surrounding Petracca. The club should lodge a massive complaint. He was continually held, impeded and scragged off the ball at every single stoppage. 1 late free kick was all he got. Makes his game all that much better

We copped the worst 3 umpires possible that all seem to have a hatred of Melbourne but this was beyond the pale.

I’m not going to comment on the umpires themselves but 100% agree re Trac. He was being held at every stoppage, blatantly. Credit to JJ for helping him out with blocks and to Trac himself for working through it.

Well that turned into quite a night. Home at 330 and like others in this thread now nursing a very sore head.

Just a fantastic, rollercoaster game from two very good teams.

To Deespencer and a small number of  others finding something to complain about - honestly probably reconsider if following footy is good for you. Outside of finals and the ultimate day, last night is pretty much as good as it gets for any supporter.

Just enjoy it and worry about our corridor defense in 3 days time!!

Oh right, gotcha! I thought you were referring to the cheersquad and the lady was WCW 😂

I'll definitely be trying to get on over to that side of the ground in future, last night we snuck into M50 in the last quarter as I could see there were plenty of vacant seats but that's a reserved seat area - is M52 reserved seat or reserved bay?

Although he didn’t score a goal from it, Trent Rivers run and carry in the last was up there with the best I have seen by a Melbourne player at the MCG. Right up there with Jack Watts and Shane Woewodin.

It was Harmes pick up in the Grand Final vibe

Jack Viney’s goal is the perfect example of why he’s first picked every week. He ripped that ball out of McInerney’s grasp like a Lion taking food from a Hyena. He then slots it on his non preferred. In 53 years of watching football I’ve never seen anything like it. He’s a beast and I love him for that. I can’t believe I ever criticised him. That was the most fun I’ve had at the footy in years. I was up and about, loud and proud and just sensed a comeback. Anyway now for Adelaide.

He is having the best season of his career. We’ve been able to cover Clarry’s enormous absence purely because he’s gone into TOP TIER BEAST MODE

I love his sheer willingness to win. Him and Trac are next level.

Yes, IF Melksham can continue to do a defensive role like he did on Harris Andrews last night. It will give Fritta more freedom to do Fritta things.
It does mean no Smith and you would have to play with probably only two smalls in Kosi and ANB.

I hate to say it but we may be a better team without Grundy.

Not because of Grundy but Max looks like he plays better in the fulltime role.

Max hasn't had a great season this year but last night played a blinder.  Not sure what Goody and co will make of it.

Based on last nights output it appears Max is a much better player getting continuity as the main ruck. I listened to the post match commentary and was a bit surprised that Matthew Richardson and then separately Adam Cooney (peanut if you ask me) thought that it would be impossible for Grundy to be an effective forward. I'm not sure I agree with that. Grundy is a smart guy and has plenty of football IQ so with some good coaching I believe he can evolve into a capable forward.

Cooney was actually suggesting we trade Grundy at seasons end - to me that would be dumb because atm we have nobody ready to take the ruck role on if Max were to get injured. I'd love to see Brodie become a serious threat in the F50 by the seasons end - over to our coaches to make it happen.

Agree with the sentiment here.

The way they dominated the middle two quarters shows us that we have areas to work on.

But that can wait. It must wait. Moments like this just need to be relished. Soak in the win for a few days, ignore tactics and changes and weaknesses. We all want ultimate glory but we have to celebrate the H&A wins. It’s what makes being a sports fan worth it.

Absolutely mate, well said.

Couldn't believe it when I logged on and read negativity

There's nothing like the fun that comes after a win like that in person.

The urinal is fun, the donut stand is fun, the walk to the pub is fun and of course the pub was great. KFC on Bourke St was fun (and delicious, even though I willingly donated 2 of my wings to the happy strangers that asked).

Even the Uber home was fun. Those Tesla's are pretty cool.

Fun fun fun

Im still drunk evidently

Interesting hearing Goodwin and one or two players mention after the game about engaging attack mode when we really needed to score at the end.

Footy games these days go in big momentum swings, much like how NBA games go. Would love our leaders on the ground to be in a position to call for us to engage that attack mode during games when we have the momentum. That is the time to cash in and at times I think we could get the 25 point buffers that we regularly seem to build out to 45 and break the oppo. I think it would also result in our forwards getting better looks and building confidence.

Not going into attack mode is what cost the Saints flags in that 2009-2010 period...they dominated games only to keep their opponents within reach by sticking with the ultra defensive method. Same for Freo a few years later.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
