Whatever you think of Brown, you might be interested to know that his 2023 season averages in most metrics are higher than Schache's career averages (disposals, marks, goals, score involvements).

Ben Brown and Josh Schache AFL Stats Comparison (footywire.com)

Both underwhelming if you ask me - it is the reason I was always keen to try and make it work with Petty inside F50 - at least he will provide a strong contest both in the air and on the ground.

BB has not shown any ability to take contested marks, nor has he demonstrated any real ability to chase or tackle effectively when the ball is in dispute or in the opposition's possession. I know some people will not agree but personally I think we'd be better served playing JVR or even Schache over BB atm.

BBB and JVR are not exactly super athletes.  I dont think you can have more than 1 of these  individuals in the same side (couple with Gawndy). That doesn't mean they don't compete in the contest but what they both lack is athleticism - BBB more so than JVR.

J.Smith is both an aerial threat and is very athletic, but unfortunately lacks a bit of skill and intelligence.  Think of J.Cameron, Curnow. Not saying we need to have someone that talented (wouldnt hurt), but playing that role is what we are in desperate need of. TMac in his prime would play this role extremely well, which consequently helped us win a flag. He was competitive on the wings, provided a target to kick to and was reasonably smart with i50 delivery. We are trying to get one of Gawn / BBB to now play that role and they just lack in too many of the areas.

IMV J.Smith is better suited to that role. The only way BBB and JVR play in the same forward line is when there is no Gawndy.

Kozzie and Chandler at their peak game are match winners.

To see them both back in great form is vital.

I think their form can be reflected a lot in just the pure forward lineup instability and insanity of our forward entries this season.

I hope JVR, BB, Koz and Chandler (with Fritta missing at the moment) are just put in the same side sooner than later and given 4 continuous weeks of decent delivery to get into a solid goal kicking, match winning groove together.

For some reason, when I read that post the name Oxley sprung to mind ....

I think this underrates JVR a bit, he’s no lumbering dinosaur.

Smith isn’t the answer either, he’s kicked 4 goals in 33 games over 6 seasons, admittedly he’s been a defender for a lot of those games but he’s played forward too and he’s not going to morph into Russell Robertson between now and GF day.

Its BBB & JVR for mine, Fritsch hopefully back for finals, TMac can fight for a spot if his ankle comes good too but Smith & Schache are only injury coverage from now on for me.

Yeah nah, JVR is pretty good at ground level. He leads well, recovers quickly from marking contests, lots of second efforts and tackling efforts. He's better at ground level than both Fritta and BB (or Sache for that matter).

Really hoping Dunkley misses this week who is currently listed as an outside chance. He's the ultimate two way player that has elevated their midfield this year.

Oliver and Fritta will be clearly missed.

However Oliver missed our benchmark win over Collingwood and hopefully BBB and Melksham can replace the 3 goals that Fritta kicked that day and more, while Kozzie could potentially go from 0 to 3 to get us to the 12-14 goal mark.

13 goals on Friday night footy in July should get the job done, and we managed 26 scoring shots on Kings BDAY.

Would you take 4 goals from BBB and Melksham combined if it were offered right now?

I have nothing new to add but want to reiterate how critical a good performance is this week. It will be build momentum and confidence leading into a run of winnable games at the G. I agree with @binman that the FD also sees it this way and will give the team the best chance to win the match like we did against the Pies.

I would and that's probably as about as much as we can expect from these two given their inconsistent/interrupted seasons.

Kozzie, Spargo and the mids needs to contribute on the scoreboard. Another 2 from Sparrow would be invaluable.

I get the feeling Kozzie is way down on confidence.  I would like to see that line up too but not sure if Kozzie should be dropped. Do we roll the dice with some out of form players?Maybe it's too late in the season not too. At least Bbb showed some good signs

Sounds weird but I’d love to see Kozzie and bowey swap positions as something left field, even for a quarter.

Every time I see Bowser at training he is slotting them through from all angles , and I’d hate to be a small forward being chased by Koz.

Might give him a new lease on life ala Nick Daicos and be more creative.

I meant it literally, like the cliche that the performance is more important than the result. But now that I think about it I do just want the win, and hopefully one that is convincing!

Mitch Cleary saying Grundy in doubt.

Whilst he’s actually playing better than Max, this is the sort of out which forces your hand for the better. Somewhat similar to Fagan having to free Daniher up. Might make us a little more mobile and see us move the ball quicker in transition

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
