    So I've had a few beers and I'm trying to work out how I watched the reigning premiers last night who are playing so bad this year and tonight the grand finalists being so garbage against a team that are exactly like Geelong last year who just keep winning at home but really aren't that good but somehow are near the top #anditsdoimgmyheadin

    So far I've deduced

    1. Brisbane could potentially be this year's Geelong which is frightening.

    2. Swans have fallen off a cliff

    3. Geelong's wheels are wobbling and I hope we put a stick in their spokes next week

    And.....If we had our own home ground, would we be on top?

    Canā€™t help think that the result would have been very different if the umpiring hadnā€™t got Brisbane back into the game in the second quarter.  Sydney was well on top at stage then the momentum swung 180.

    Amazing that umpire Marais Erasmus did not award a 50 metre penalty against Patrick Cummins for showing obvious dissent in last ball before lunch.

    Brisbane are the Nickleback of season 2023. Why are they where they are on the ladder?

    At least the Gabba will soon be demolished and they'll have to play at ummmm.

    The Gabba is a double edged sword for the lions.

    They have a phenomenal record up there. It must be the best home record in the AFL, surely. Geelong wouldn't be far behind I guess.

    Every season they bank good points from their home games.

    But most games are at night, and it is almost always humid and slippery, so the ball is on the deck and the conditions are tough going. 

    The conditions suit contest to contest, tough footy.

    And that's basically the lions game plan in a nutshell. Meat and potatoes footy.

    Works well at the gabba, but not so well elsewhere, particularly at the G, where the extra space and better conditions expose their lack of leg speed.

    That's the other edge.

    Build a game plan and list, by design or otherwise, to maximise wins at gabba. Gets them to top 4, so big upside.

    But if the game plan and list can't deliver a flag they're stuck if they don't change something.

    Lions kicking was absent abhorrent all night. Dump kicks out of d50, unforced errors, with or without real pressure from the swans. We should slaughter them in the turn over game, I hope we get our revenge at the g and shred them to pieces.

    You are probably right Binman, but they had the same ground and conditions in 2001, 2, 3 when they won premierships and last year when they beat us on our home ground in the finals.

    The first 3 flags were over 20 years ago and have nothing to do with their current list.

    Last year in the final, we had half our team banged up and after we led at half time I think it was, they got on top in the second half, but only won because our guys were totally stuffed.

    Max even said later he normally wouldnā€™t have played and couldnā€™t move after time. Tracc had a broken bone in his leg. Clarry a fractured cheekbone. Gus and Salem leg issues and several others.

    Lions have that as their only win at the G in last 14 games there. That does say something about game style or personnel.

    Lions shouldnt even get finals due to the Gabba being a sub standard provincial cricket ground.

    Definitely should not be awarded a Prelim with expected crowd of 36K.

    Imagine the farce if they play Collingwood. Gabba 36000.   MCG 90,000.  No comparision. AFL is run by amateurs propped up by corporate media.  I couldnt care less about all these expansion clubs. Subsidised rubbish.

    And is why talk of a mcg hoodoo is ridiculous (and yes one more ridiculous media narrative to add to the pile).

    The MCG is not the problem.

    Their list and game plan is.

    I probably should have made it clearer that I was responding to the issue of whether the ground and conditions they played under where necessarily an impediment to them winning premierships. 
    The list can change, but the ground and conditions, not much.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonā€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyā€™s three matches and, with Melbourneā€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekā€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardā€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnā€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamā€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneā€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demonsā€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ā€˜G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sundayā€™s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors.
