What happened?

We pantsed the filth after they jumped us in the first 10 minutes.

Take away the dodgy umpiring and our poor shots on goal and we won by 6 goals.

But I'll sure take any win over the Pies.

Salem back to his best makes a big difference.

Elliott might have a few injuries but not always.  An extremely dangerous forward

De Goey is a star

Going into the game we had a bit of an advantage in terms of available high-end talent

But against all that we had the yips something chronic in front of goal so kick straight and we win easily

Don't be underestimating the Pies.  We got the win but there will be a next time

They've been up for a long time and this loss for them will probably do them the world of good

Put it this way, if we underperform in front of goal like we did today (in a final) ... we'll lose

But enjoy the win, we played very well and beat a worthy opponent

Sidebottom has been very damaging against us for a long time.  It's mostly me hoping that age catches up with him as much as anything.

Yeah I noticed the smile on his run in. I reckon he just loves the moment in the spotlight.loves the pressure and has a healthy dose of self confidence.

BT drove me crazy. It reminded me of a Socceroos or Wallabies game, where the Aussie commentators know they can be parochial because 99% of the viewers are Aussies. This is not the case for an AFL game. I am sure many neutral supporters would have felt the same.

Yep.  Thought most of the Channel 7 muppets were pro-Pies all day.  Painful and cannot wait until Foxtel can use their own commentators.

Interesting that Spargo was subbed. He may find it hard to keep his spot with Clarrie and Bowza to come back.

He did some smart work near me on the Members wing. I still wonder why we haven’t played him as a wing/half forward more. OK not that he has been fit for too many games. However when fit & available he can cover ground, has great hands and according to Alan Richardson, a few years ago, he has an elite endurance engine. He should be able to run quickly all day but guess we will never know. But I hope he gets a good, injury free run as an athletic, defensive forward who takes the odd spekie!

I see your point and the win today was the most satisfying since the '21 GF

Petty will get back in but Smithy played quite well today and big Tomlinson was good too (especially in the last quarter)

Bowey yes but someone has to make way ... Brayshaw, Rivers & McVee all gave us good drive from the half-back line

Competition for spots heats up from here on in.  Players will be well rested with 2 x 10 days breaks coming up

Next assignment the Cats.  Nothing can be done now but at least 60k - 70k would fill the MCG for that encounter

As we found last year depth is important in a marathon season. We have 2 first-year 19-year-olds making major contributions. In Brown, TMac, Bowey, Petty & Oliver we have 5 premiership players unavailable but we still manage to put a very classy team on the park. Their replacement are playing their role and contributing as much as the player they replace (except Oliver)

Looking at Collingwood's seconds yesterday they wouldn't want too many injuries as they don't have the depth. Their best 6 in the seniors are very very good but I am not so sure about their bottom 6.

The good news is we still have room for significant improvement and if we can start hitting targets and not turning it over as much in addition to hitting the post 4 times and missing 6 or more set shots we will scare any team. I am so pleased for Tomlinson he is showing signs of regaining his pre-knee reco form. I hope Smith can string some games together as he adds something different to the forward line. Finally I am not sure how much longer we can run with Nibbler, Spargo, Kozzie & Chandler all in the forward line. They apply pressure and lock it in but we need a more polished forward. I am not knocking any of them but my concern is their primary role is to tackle and lock it in. Do we need 4 to do this job?

Hard to know where to start after that:

1) Goodwin gets his first big ✅ for a match day coaching performance. Thought we really stifled moores influence and blocked their corridor run as well as pressured their questionable ball users across half back such as noble frampton Maynard etc. When you put pressure on Collingwood they make mistakes with their high risk, high reward game.

 

2) Jack Viney-take a bow champ. Willed us over the line for the umpteenth time.

 

3) We are a much better side with Tomlinson in there. Back 6 were absolutely phenomenal as well apart from Mays last 5 mins. Rivers and Salem gave us great drive from half back and used it well. 

 

4) Joel smith added some energy and spark to the forward line and presented up the ground at times. Happy to continue with that experiment.

 

5) Hunter has been the find of the season for us. When we won the flag in 21 we had an attacking wing (Langdons wing) and a defensive wing (brayshaws wing) however we can now attack through both sides of the ground.

 

6) Loved seeing Mason Cox trying to start Trac after the siren. Would hope our players would never bring themselves down to that level

I was watching him come off and it looked all the world he had dislocated his shoulder. Maybe he did!

He is a serious unit when he plays like he did today. Which is how he plays every big game.

I swear I saw him yelling at JJ to sit down when he came off 😂

Glad we subbed off Spargo. JJ was very clean in the last quarter. He’s too good not to play senior footy.

Rd 13 I flew down and we won.

A pattern is emerging….

 

Viney is putting together a very impressive season. He now has won the Anzac Day medal as well as the one today. Both big games where he showed outstanding leadership.

Ran hard and defended well pushing up to stand the mark and held up their transition a little on a few occasions.

He could eventually become our version of a Mihocek type forward at some stage IF he can hold his form amd continue to take his chances.

That match will do his confidence the world of good and those of his team mates in terms of looking to hit him up more often.
