BT said the players look like they have heavy legs. (I normally don’t listen to him).

The talk of loading could be a reason for our poor execution and I hope that’s the problem, because I have no idea.

But for Gods sake, if that is the problem, can we freshen the Players up for Kings Birthday, because I believe I’m not the only one who really wants to beat Collingwood.

Do we really load at this time of year?

Yes... yes we do.

Did Tommo get soundly beaten by McKay? I don't think so. Harry kicked a checkside beauty and a ripper outside 50 but also flapped like a balloon for a dicey free.

Harry had 9 marks and 5 inside 50 so nothing to sneeze at but Tommo wasn't that far off.

He got away a copy of times, but overall Harry got good service and also Tomlinson was often left one out in those situations.

I think sacrificial isn't a bad description, even if not entirely true. It's almost as if let that match up be the free one at times, making sure everything else was covered.

Now that the dust has settled a bit, it was a very ugly game, but what I loved was McVee, JVR (best game?), Kozzie’s goal, some of our good defensive work and Maxy’s goal at the end.

For the love of god can we ban loading on this website.

The players have played 12 weeks without a break, we need the bye. All teams do.

Apart from that we are slow in the midfield.

We need Oliver, we could do with a second winger who could out run his shadow and a forward/mid burner and we need some more cohesive ball use.

But a freshen up that doesn’t involve punching each other would be a good result for the next 2 weeks.

Our percentage increased tonight.

We had the best percentage in the competition after 11 rounds. But after tonight it increased further.

I know it felt like we could lose at any moment, but we won by higher than our average win % for the year. In fact we won by higher than the average win % than any other team for the whole comp.

Scary to think that we only kicked 8.13.

Tomlinson was always undersized in that contest. I thought he did reasonably well.

And sure enough, Lever started to look good again.

My take:

It was a hard contested game, played hard by both squads.  We hit th e contest harder than they did (big positive) and won the clearances and contested ball numbers.

We kept them to a ridiculous first half score, so the defensive stuff was pretty good.

Max had a bad game - took some marks but some of his giraffe kicks were awful,  Lucky he kicked that goal to redeem himself.

Poor goal kicking tonight,  the trend continues.

A lot to like in JVR, McVee, lingers and hunter.  May did an excellent job and Trac was sublime.

Happy to take the4 points and move onto next week.  The defensive side if our game was very good tonight, so if we can being that next week and straighten up our goal kicking and transition work, we stand a red hot chance to dack the filth.

You mob in Melbourne need to have a good hard look at yourselves. Less than 50k at the G in good weather on a prime Friday night game against a team in the Blues trying for top 8 is a disgrace. This aside it was a good UGLY win and I will take that. We are doing a Geelong and building. You don't win the flag in June.

I agree. However it took me 40 minutes to get to Caulfield. Every damn train line is not running and it takes 20 minutes to get inside the station thanks to Myki.
I now have to drive an hour home. So I understand the frustration and why people are staying home.

I’m not sure it did. It felt to me as though we held them at arm’s length all night.

It was an absolute grind, but imo, there were some positive signs.  In particular:

*  The defence stood up, in part (imo) because Tommo freed up Rick Lever to do his thing.  May, Salo and McVie probably played their best games for the year
*  Sparrow and Riv had good games again, confirming that they belong at this level.
*  Lingers and Hunter looked like they might be getting back towards their best
*  Forward half pressure was a lot better than it has been recently
*  JVR had his best game
*  Max had a good second half

Still loads to work on, but imo, it was better than just a 17 point, grinding win.

Tommo got beaten fair and square tonight. Seemed to trail his opponent all night.

However, it allowed May and Lever to play far better games than in recent weeks and it’s absolutely unquestionable that we operate better when we have three +190cm defenders.

We are now 3-0 since round 1 2022 with the May-Lever-Tomlinson combo.

I’d like to see the combo continue against the Pies.

He definitely did better than I thought he would.

Really good game from our perspective. Got that solidity behind the ball back. Really good signs.

Contested possession +29.

inside 50s +20.

clearances +9.

Smashed them all over the ground. I don’t know what most people want from the team. Without looking, I assume it’s just groupthink from the Gameday thread.

Agree with this. Must be bitterly frustrating for the Goodwin sackers.

Yeah, that was overkill. Lovely people as they are. Peter (father) was a terrific tennis player and his sister Sandra on his left a former Age journalist.

I’d be happy for just 1 week.

Yeah, coz they were so ruthless last week against the second worst team in the afl when they got smashed in the last, giving up 6 goals.

And despite winning three more games prior to this match, they still had a lower percentage than us.

So ruthless.

IIs this a bloody pies footy forum or a Demon's one?

FMD.

 👏👏👏👏

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
