CASEY: Rd 11 vs Southport

KC from Casey

Recommended Posts

Just watched the bit of the last quarter I missed. Noticed the coupla good things Benny did in the last minutes, but particularly noticed his personal and team-directed happiness after the siren.

Great club man. Happy to be involved and doing his bit wherever that may be.

Very impressive 2nd half from Grey.

Attended a number of CBs and looked 'ok'.

Pushed forward for some quality involvements and goals then a fab marking attempt that resulted in a free on the boundary late in the final quarter was very gutsy to hold up play and get us going towards 50.

Shown some very good signs in patches in a number of other games over the years but today was another level imho.

What do the Casey experts think and where are we at here in terms of getting him on our list?

It surprised me that some of the non listed players go well measured against full time professionals. Grey is one of them.

Grey seems to be pretty much equal on both feet and his disposal efficiency is elite.

His second goal today was on his left.

I was just waiting and waiting for someone to say this. It was a seriously selfish moment, papered over by the fact that we won the '21 premiership and the correct dribbling of the ball. If he had missed that goal it would have been a very bad look. Still, saying all this Fritta is a serious class act. Now, onwards to Kysiah and his penchant for spoiling JVR and Gawny's marking attempts.

Don't understand as a supposed Melb. supporter why you would continually bag a 19 year old kid?  Just bizarre. And while you're at it, listen to your inner voice, the one that tells you to STFU.

Just to iterate a couple of facts about Matt Jefferson....

A heck of a nice kid with strong values and upbringing. A guy who takes in coaches comments and strives to get better. A loyal bloke that loves his mates. A sticky fingered one grab player, A mainly dead eye kick. Yep he is as skinny as a Greyhound, and needs to put on weight and he will. BUT he is young and will learn and l'll tell you something else about him, when he makes the papers it will be for all the right reasons unlike many who's indescretions are cringeworthy and reek of entitlement and lack of moral fibre. He may or may not make it but I"ll guarantee he will give it 100% and respect the club and game!

I would rather Fritsch take the shot than start 2nd guessing himself.

Fritta using his desired left foot is much better than lugging a 30m handball to chandler in the square

James Jordan had played 9 games up to round 11, 2023. Some of those were as Sub, with limited game time. In games where he played 66% or higher his stats look like this...

Round   Disp.      Marks       Goals        Tkl.         C. Poss                     %

   3           21             8              1             3               6                           80

   6           17             4              1             2               3                           66

   7           22             4             0             1                7                           83

   8           17             2              1             3                5                           67

Had a few quiet periods but he was involved in a few chains and assists that resulted in goals.

Love to know what his score involvements and goal assists were.

If he isn't marking on a lead his mere height and reach often results in oppo defenders panicking.  They sometimes end up chopping arms etc in an attempt to spoil resulting in the odd free and shot at goal, often from very good angles as we witnessed in this match.

Put a nice pass into Schache at one stage from memory who goaled?

Took a very nice pack mark from behind on another occasion.

A chopped arm free on another occasion that he slotted.

Defensively his biggest weakness is of course when ball hits ground but a VG coach will recognise this and adjust structures around the drop and behind the ball in an attempt to limit the damage where possible but also use it as an opportunity for quality mediums to crumb & goal.

His overall game was certainly nothing outstanding but BB rarely kicks a bag.

Often consistent though with a bit of an off year last season.  Goal averages

2023 > 3.0

2022 > 1.6

2021 > 1.9

There must be a reason/s he isn't getting a game till now and the FD obviously have alot more they see and know within the four walls that we have no idea about.

Having said that if he did manage to tick 90% of all the boxes bar defending ground ball (including loading and fitness KPIs etc)....i'd be bringing him straight in for a small this week which we've had too many of IMHO.  Either that or he comes in for Joel.  Somewhat unfair on Joel probably but had his chance and failed to impact the scoreboard.

Yout attempts to justify, gloss over ( or ignore) Fritta's yet again selfishness in not playing proper team footy are laughable .

Of course Fritta is paid to kick goals but so is Chandler  and any other Dees player. You don't pick and choose who you handpass to in that situation but DO THE TEAM THING.

Whst will  happen is that lack of team play spreads as another player will do it AND before it dreamt cu of you know it NO ONE will go to goal square like Chandler to get the handball and the shot will be missed and we will burn a goal and LOSE a game.

Your reasons are irrelevant and no excuse for any other than team play at AFL level. Team rules are king.

I’m as harsh on Fritsch as anyone but he got the ball completely blind to Chandler’s location swinging on to his left with pressure closing. Absolutely no issue with him kicking that one. Fritsch has been far less selfish the last 2 weeks too.

Every situation is different and that was one to kick the goal.

I'm not sure what this is doing under the Casey thread, but I disagree with the assessment of Fritsch being selfish in this instance. The fact is he was under pressure, it would have been extremely hard to get a handball over the top to Chandler and there was an open goal square. I can understand Chandler being upset given his goalkicking woes of late, but for me Fritsch took the right option. Imv this whole Fritsch being selfish thing is a media beat-up. A couple of isolated instances. I just wish everyone would get off his back. What he brings to the team is crucial (thanks though to you for also acknowledging he is a class act).

I agree with you about Pickett. We don't need him flying against our talls. He should be positioning himself to get the knock-downs.

I like George, and he has weeks where I’m stunned he’s not on an AFL list because he has a touch of class to go with what appears to be a good work rate and attack on the ball.

But at the same time I don’t think he’s got enough speed to use it as a weapon, is on the smaller side for a mid or flanker without a leap or sticky hands, hasn’t established himself as a consistent midfielder and isn’t an absolutely standout ball user.

There’s probably a number of lesser players getting games at AFL level this week but with list spots so hard to come by I’m not entirely sure Grey will get one

Give it a break mate...don't call an opinion that is not in agreement with yours laughable.

Hardly an intelligent call.

Last year a lot got on the bandwagon re Bailey and they like you are way off the mark.

That was an easy shot for him and he took it.

He didn't burn Kade, he did one time last year with Trac...

...and the whole thing got blown up in the media.

I don't want to see players continually burning each other and this is not that.

I likewise don't want Bailey 2nd guessing himself.

For me JJ should be in Melbourne's side every week, preferably in the 22, but at least as sub. Giving the club the benefit of the doubt, maybe the idea was to give him a full game for Casey this week, rather than a partial game for Melbourne, and with Casey playing in Queensland and Melbourne playing at the MCG on Friday night this was the way to do it.  I can't understand Melbourne putting Harmes ahead of JJ for so many reasons. Anyway, Harmes won't be playing this week.

Isn't this discussion in the wrong thread?

If you take it to the post Carlton game post, I would offer my opinion.

Thanks didn’t realise they did VFL replays.

p.s. Using the link instead of navigating through AFL sites, I think you have to download, open, then switch from 'offline' to 'online'. And it's 'Match videos' rather than 'Videos'. Full replay is 2nd or 3rd vid down.

Me too, BUT Fritta needed that goal. His goal kicking has gone off the rails and it has to be mental now.
Kicking that low percentage one was good for his confidence and he was better all around after that shot went in.

I'd have to disagree on that one, @Jaded No More.

He had plenty of space, the goals were wide open, the angle was favourable for his left foot and the chances of kicking it were high IMO.  Fritta did exactly what he is paid to do.

Well in terms of how he’s been kicking them, it was low percentage and he had Chin free in the square.
As I said I have no issues with him going for it because he needed it for his confidence. He’s been so off with his goal kicking these last 3 weeks.

I also have no issues with Kosi going for those low percentage pocket kicks either. You just don’t want players doing it if they have a teammate standing alone in the goal square.

He had kicked the previous Melbourne goal to that one!

‘I need a goal’ is a terrible justification for selfish play. No matter your own personal form or confidence you should do the team thing and it will come back around to you.

I just don’t think it was selfish given when and where he received the ball. Having waited under a lofty handball he couldnt have been certain Chandler wasn’t covered and he had to make a split second decision turn in board and handball or roll to his preferred side and kick. If he was a right footer I’d expect a handball but once he went left it became harder to see and pass it off.

As a team our forwards need to learn how to share the ball with handballs and create space for each other to get better shots. Really in this situation JVR should’ve gone to Sparrow who then would’ve had 2 on 1 to walk it in. But it’s not always that perfect and JVR and Fritsch both went direct to goal, nothing wrong with that.

Our forwards also need to learn how to block for each other and how to lead up to create space too. A lot of to work on more than Fritter dribbling in an open goal.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started.
