As a coach myself, I've long said that Carlton's coaching of McKay has been unacceptable.

They should have said at the start of last year, 'mate, you have to find a drop punt routine, and it might not work for a while, but when it does, you'll be unstoppable'.

Instead, they've left him to his own ridiculous kick around the corner technique from all over the joint, and eventually this technique has failed him too, leaving him completely bereft of confidence.

This is a completely fixable problem.

I'd be getting the psychologist on the case too. I mean they probably are, but from a coaching perspective, they've taken the easy route and it's backfiring badly.

On about a million a year, so which two contracted players get moved to accommodate his salary?

Blues would be wanting x2 top 10 picks which we can't currently satisfy. 

Harry is a gun and a good fit for us, but I can't see how a deal gets done with Carlton.

Sadly, we are one year late. This should have been done before his new contract at Carlton l.

If they were open to it, I’d offer our two first rounders.  Carlton forward line functions better without him and he is exactly what we need.

The better Carlton does in his absence the more likely this becomes an option. I don't know whether he is open to leaving but he would make a massive difference to us.

In terms of cost i'd give Carlton our first rounders this year. If our later pick isn't satisfactory maybe, we can do a deal with GC to get there's.

And I'd prefer to use our picks on McKay than trading up for No.1 to get Harley Reid.

McKay is a gun but we don't need the super premium option. We need a job done and it can be done by someone on less than half the salary McKay claims and about a quarter of the trade value. Our draft hand this year (which I suspect will once again be partially played into next year) is the key to turning a peak into a dynasty and it would take a truly exceptional opportunity to convince me that tossing it in would be worth it.

Surely Carlton can't pay both McKay and Curnow In the long run. I was surprised they were able to offer long term contracts to both of them.

We certainly have an incredible hand in the draft this year.  We can either:

• trade our early picks for established marquee player/s 
• pick swap up the draft to secure Harley Reid
• use the draft to pick up a suite of young talent ensuring a strong list for a decade
• trade some of our early picks for developing players and leave some for the draft.

On top of this is the Grundy question which comes into the equasion. 

The question is whether our focus is on trying to increase our odds of premierships in the next couple of years or develop a list that will continue to be rejuvenated beyond the current list maintaining success post Gawn. The aim; regular top four finishes for a decade or more with an occasional flag.  Think Geelong.  

Our list is middle aged, Gawn at 31 will start to tire in the next year or two and Track and Oliver are at the peak of their powers. Viney is having a career best season at 28yo (My god he has been unbelievable).  Regardless we need to pick-up another young gun midfielder in the next year or two if we are going to try do a Geelong.  

Then again we could go for immediate Premierships. If so the temptation of trading for McKay if he comes available is massive.  He is the missing piece of our puzzle now that Brown is in quick decline.  I am not sure where our salary cap is at but we could easily trade Grundy to free up cap space if required.  My only concern with McKay is he gets the yips far too often.  This is in his head.  Could Chocko fix this? Regardless, if we picked up McKay we would go into next season as Flag favourites regardless on how this season pans out.

I am not sure what is best for us, long term success builds culture and power, but Premierships is what we play for. Whatever the case we do have a mighty hand. 

This year's trade and draft period will be pivotal to our short- and medium-term premiership hopes.

Well put. There’s big multi year decisions to make this off season aren’t there. Mckay would be a mixed blessing… but so tempting! Personally im in the long term success bag vs immediate success. Hopefully we can do both.

Once Tassie enters and, given that our facilities that may make attracting players more difficult if we’re falling , we just do not want to be dropping off too far at that time. The plight of West Coast is not something I want to ever see again at this club. 

Ultimately this club has done SO much right for a long time now…I feel I can trust good decisions will be made. Even  if I disagree with them.

it's amazing how much better carlton look without the double tall forward attack of curnow and mckay

whilst i doubt that anyone will trade for the latter - who can afford $1m a year for the next seven years? - it does make for an interesting conundrum for the baggers

They have seven players on $800,000 and five on $550,000. They may lose SOSOS if they can’t offer him a good contract at year’s end. They clearly don’t have much wiggle room.

I get your drift but I think Mackay being out of the team with injury during the same time as their resurgence is a bit too simplistic. 
 

Curnow is a jet and is in rich form but imagine the headaches the two of them would present during their current form streak.

Until the Collingwood game they had a very soft draw. So their wins have come against pretty ordinary opposition (Port were missing half their team and are very questionable away from Adelaide).

I'd consider McKay, but I do wonder if he's the right type of KPF for our game style.

But his contested marking would be a weapon.

Apologies WCW, my intention of my post was not to infer that you or the numbers were wrong.
I was curious, so ran the calculations on the remainder and shared them. 

I have heard those figures thrown around before
