More accurate to say we have at least 12 who will be considered unlucky to miss out on All-Australian selection. AND maybe four or five who do get selected.

Remembered fondly as the 'Robertson, Yze, White, Green, Davey, McDonald, Brown, Johnstone, Bruce' quality range. Except now we have a bundle of absolute guns to top it off, instead of that group trying to overcome an overall lack of depth.

Its like a guns for toys program!

Great problem to have.

At least the players showed up, cos the supporters definitely didn’t. Shocking crowd for a club with almost 60k members.

Saturday night is a graveyard fixture these days. People have things outside of football going on in their lives. Other social events..I know tht might be hard to believe for us diehards, but it’s facts! Also, people don’t have money to go out at the moment. Increase cost of living hits people. It’s on TV, it’s 13 degrees, you can get a meal delivered, it just suits some. I too would have liked to see 40 k there, but it’s what I expected. I thought we might get 22k to be honest

I'm sorry (I'm not), but you don't understand modern footy.

I understand that if your 2 tall fwds only kick 2 goals from 22 that’s not a good thing and we should expect more output than what they gave.

Never been this relaxed at the footy.
Good clinical win. No injuries. Percentage boost. Love it. Move on.

Move on??? I still haven't progressed past 25 September, 2021.

it was the 50th anniversary since American Pie. but he likes to keep things fresh so his wife is only 25

what happened??

Not exactly a starry starry night

More like a training run/circle work. North provided the witches hats (mind you, we were once like them ... '08, '09, '12, '13, '14 ugh)

It's true, I really just wanted to say the phrase 'match highlights'. I've got this thing about saying things so you deliberately sound dumb for comic effect for some reason.

Indubitably.

A great show no doubt!

I would like to thank all for their training reports tonight. It is really great for all of us that cannot get along.

Enjoy that Clarkson.

He actually gave Melbourne a big wrap in his press conference…. actually made me feel better about just how good we could possibly be.  Shades of 2021, not just contenders but perhaps again serious contenders. GO DEES!

No one. He will have to earn his spot back through the VFL. No way he is ahead of anyone on current form.

I like Spargo he has a good footy brain, but gee Chandler also has a good football brain and continues to kick goals, so spargo will have to earn his spot and Chandler would have to lose his.

It's tough but in a side like this you can lose your spot due to injury.

I've only ever heard Clarko talk highly of this club.

I'm a bit disappointed with Schache Thought he'd assert himself a little more after we gave him a lifeline. Just looked like the same player the Dogs tried to make work over a few years

Was strange. Almost talked more about us than Norf! Then again a good deflection tactic.

Clarkson says that North did not play that bad but Melbourne are just that good. Says that Melbourne has 8 maybe even 10 All Australians in our side.

Nothing against Clarkson, but he would say that wouldn't he? Takes the heat off Nth and places the focus onto the Deez. He's an ol' stager alright is Alistair. I counted four players that probably are not AFL standard and would struggle to get a game elsewhere, and a further four that would probably only get a game at the bottom four clubs in a 'break glass in emergency' situation. So yes, it would look like 10 Deez players are AA standard when you coach a team with such a handy cap.

The good news is that there are probably 6-8 players at Norf around which a formidable side can be built. It's going to take time. Reminds me of where the Deez were in '81 when Brasso returned. There were only eight players that made it through from '81 to '87 when we made the finals for the first time in 23 years. And Norf's eight players in 2023 are much better, comparatively, to ours. So it's a long trek - but they have commenced the journey and have begun constructing a solid platform IMHO.

Everything clicked. Clear night at the G. Beautiful to watch. Crowd was pretty lame, but it’s North. No injuries. Seagulls absolutely rampant all game. What happened to the falcon? Onto next week.

The seagulls were quite entertaining for half the game!

Just got home after some post game celebrations.  (Some of you may remember me talking about a German friend who I converted to the Dees' cause... he just moved to Melbourne this week!  And of course he came to the game!)

All in all very satisfying evening.  The boys seemed cohesive and comfortably in control at all times.  Nice to have such a big percentage and to have taken home the four points.  Worth attending and very festive sitting with the Demon Army tonight!

Schache will possibly/probably get another chance against GC but at their best, Brown or T-Mac would be a better bet

Schache didn't do a lot tonight but it's only one game

But if Brown and/or T-Mac turn it on tomorrow they might force the selectors hand

Mind you, JVR didn't do a lot either but we had numerous other scoring avenues against bog-average opposition so neither key forward was needed apart from creating contests or being used as decoys

The knock on Schache is that he isn't a physical player and in September, that stuff is a requirement

It's early doors, all the same.  Need a bigger sample size

JVR is a relentless physical beast, even when he is not impacting the scoreboard.

No, he's not that good (yet) ... as a forward, he has a requirement to get to the front position whenever applicable

This he doesn't do consistently yet but that's not to say he won't be a success.  He has a long way to go if the aim is B+ or A grade

Even the A graders are disciplined enough to know that playing in front increases a players chances of getting the ball immeasurably.  For instance, it's damn near impossible to win a free kick playing from behind in a marking contest

We've got the goal sneaks like Kozzie & Fritsch to play the different roles up forward

Key forwards need to be able to cop lots of punishment in order to be successful

It should be noted that the coach nearly dragged him last week

By the way, do you still want to see Brayshaw in the 2nds?  Because that's what you intimated just a few weeks ago.

Played another excellent game tonight.  In fact, he's played well all season despite the utterings from the naysayers

29 possessions at 100% disposal efficiency

Mind you, he'll probably get acknowledged with a 'clanger' when the Demon teammate he kicked it to one time during the game fell over in a marking attempt

So the stats are questionable as well

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
