This lovefest for a team that hasn’t won a premiership in over a decade is nauseating.

Don’t get me wrong they’re good but there’s definitely some flaws in their game that can easily be exploited.

Exactly. The media [censored] and oppo supporters buying it is ridiculous.

Collingwood has it's strengths but hardly Essendon 2000, or Brisbane/Geelong/Hawthorn in their pomp.

Our best is still the best going around, by a margin. The biggest factor this year between Pies, Us, Brisbane is the team we are able to put on the park. Saints, love their work but don't see them at the business end with their tall stocks. Am still not a huge fan of Brisbane away from the Gabba. And I think the draw has confused the seedlings early, a larger sample size will see a reshaping of the ladder.

Love the Pies 'total football' though is very fun to watch, but Melbourne on a roll reminds me of the final battle of Avengers end game, the most ferocious contest, with a devastating result (for others).

Collingwood - 191 Points.

Melbourne - 243 Points.

Well I think you need to look at both for and against but that has been a plus for Melbourne this year definitely. Of course winning final quarters against Essendon & Brisbane has to be looked at in the context of us losing both games but it all helps the percentage I guess...

Trac is Captain America for sure. Oliver is Iron Man, Max is Thor and May is The Hulk.

Here’s hoping that the filth are using up all of their luck early in the season, leaving nothing for the end of the year like 2022.

Actually that's a great point, so here it is.

Last Quarters - F/A
Collingwood - 191/93
Melbourne - 243/106

I still think in terms of fourth quarters we are as good, if not better than Collingwood. The only reason Collingwood get the media attention is due to the fact it looks exciting because they're always coming back from behind and barely getting the win.

I find solace in the fact that we have been the most efficient team in front of goal so... We should be able to score enough to make it impossible for them to do a come from behind heroic.

Also, our defensive structure and clearance work is much better than the likes of Essendon and Adelaide.

I think this is all a bit irrelevant. Essendon no doubt were the best team by a long way in 2000 but of the 9 premerships won by the other teams 2001-2003, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013-15 the premiers only finished on top of the ladder at the end of the H&A 2 of those years. What matters is probably finishing Top 4, being in form with limited injuries at the right time of the year, and having a bit of luck.

Geelong last year had an incredibly soft draw (they played West Coast & North twice each) and were probably lucky to beat Collingwood in the Qualifying Final. They met Brisbane and Sydney after those teams had had very tough wins and effectively were ripe for the picking. Similarly Melbourne had pretty much everything fall their way in 2021.

Let's just keep banking the wins, not overreact to a few unexpected losses, not get ahead (or behind) of ourselves, and hopefully we'll be where we need to be at the sharp end of the season.

I'm talking about whose 'game' is the best, when 'on', you're not responding to the opinion proferred. Where you finish, and banking wins, of course matters. But I was responding to the thoughts on Collingwood's luck and game style and people saying they're the best in it. Which I don't agree with.

The way things are shaping Kings Birthday could be the biggest H & A game this year. Great opportunity to demolish the filth on the national stage.

Hopefully we show up to the game and can compete with volume of the worst crowd chant in the game.

This thing with the filth is a mental game play. They know they can come back and beat a side in the last quarter and the opposition have it in their head that the filth will over run them. Change this situation ( another side beating the filth in a tight last quarter ) a couple of times and watch them start to fold.

100%. This is all mental and the Pies thrive off it.
There were so many Pies turnovers (much higher than afl avg) that a more experienced side clinical on turnovers would have won that game by 6+ goals.

Pies also employ our 2018 esque high defensive line and are extremely aggressive in their pressure. Crows showed us how to dismantle this by winning the inside battle early on and getting it to the outside. They just couldn’t finish.

As the game wore on the Pies took so many risks and did some really stupid things trying to get into the game - crows just folded… nothing else.

Thanks for the F/A. You could argue that Melbourne's numbers should be better after we conceded 3 late goals against North, but Collingwood also conceded the last 3 goals agaist St Kilda. What you can't argue with is that Melbourne have won every last quarter this year and Collingwood have only won 4.5. Apart from the win against Richmond (and we were only behind by 2 points) we haven't come from behind at 3/4 time but that's because we haven't had to. Naturally, no-one talks about the issues with Collingwood's game that has meant they've been behind in 4 out of 7 games at 3/4 time, only that they've come back to win 3 of them.

You might need to look at who they've played and who we've played. They've had a tougher draw for sure.

Can't wait for King's Birthday, could be the biggest home n away crowd we've ever played in front of if weather is good to us.

Hate saying it but they are a super impressive team and enjoyable to watch.

Fair enough. I like Melbourne's game style when we're on too. I didn't see a whole lot of analysis of the game style of Essendon, Geelong, Brisbane or Hawthorn in your post so I was just assuming you were using premiership wins as some sort of proxy for game style. Personally I'd take another Melbourne premiership ahead of game style any day!

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025. 2024 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence. The first round draft pick at #13 from twelve months ago the strongly built medium forward has had an impressive introduction to AFL football and is expected to spend more midfield moments as his career progresses. The move of “Disco” to a key forward post looks like bearing fruit. Turner has good hands, moves well and appears to be learning the forward craft well. Will be an interesting watch in 2025. Lack of preparation after a problematic preseason prevented Oliver from reaching the high standards set before last year’s hamstring woes. He carried injury right through the back half of the season and was controversially involved in a potential move during the trade period that was ultimately shut down by the club.
