Was at the game last night and haven't seen a replay yet.ย  In terms of overall influence on the result, Gawn and Viney were the difference all the game and JVR was the match winner.ย  Chandler is coming along very nicely, ANB played the sort of game that really suits his strengths, Hibberd did well controlling what looked like our biggest danger in the first quarter and Lever was poised. I'll agree with the ANZAC medal judges and go:

I agree with Swooper.

Much as I loved JVRโ€™s final quarter and especially his goals, he was all at sea the other dozen times the ball came his way.ย

I gave votes to the two kids that kept us in the game and eventually won it for us. Lever, Brayshaw and Langdon all deserved a vote, a great team effort in the end it was an exhilarating and tense game to watch at the G and boy did we get behind them it was so loud in the second half.!!!

From the Director's chair;

Happenstance, JVR took flight in the last quarter just before being subbed off. His three goal burst was a match winning contribution. In a tense closely fought battle for supremacy of the hallowed MCG turf. The Demons overcame fierce resistance from the Tigers, to send them back to their Punt Road lair, to lick their wounds.

Adjudication;

According the DL post-game thread the condemnation of the umpiring performance was almost at universal pariah status. Surprisingly, the difference was only four more frees in favour of the Tigers. The total number of free kicks given was fifty-one. Is the fourth umpire necessary? Supposedly the extra gives greater scrutiny, but fairness goes both ways. The amount of infringements going 'unnoticed' particularly in packs is a blight on the game.

Broadcasters;

Preferred setting now during the game is a low rumble of crowd noise. Tiring of the oft partisan inanities and vacuousness of many the 'ex'pert commentators.

Staggering the lack of love for Grundyโ€™s game. His second half was huge and if you listened to Hardwickโ€™s press conference youโ€™d learn that he was becoming the difference for us and that they were forced to move Balta into the ruck which led to JVR clunking some.ย

It was 10-17 Tigers way at half time, meaning we got 13-10 after that point.

Its a correlation/causation question in that sometimes you lead the free kicks because you are first to the ball and win the frees for holding the man, too high, etc. and other times you lead the game because the umpires are giving you all the momentum.

In that kind of case, momentum from free kicks is often about ground position and who had the ball at the time.

I thought in the first half they definitely helped Richmond's momentum.

I do agree with this. I wanted to fit him in my 6 but couldn't. But Grundy into the ruck, freeing up Max to go forward had a big influence on the game.

The free kicks awarded/denied in the early part of the game contribute to momentum.ย  Taking Fritsch's kick off him is a cruel blow, worth more than just one kick.ย  The umpires do appear to have a script to assist, as they can - and they often tidy that up statistically late in the game when the damage has been done.ย  Last night was too one-sided to be just the run of the green or whatever.ย  It was loaded in favour of the Tigers until later, when credibility dictated evening up the frees as far as could be harmlessly done.ย  Crying shame this happens, and without regulation.ย  Why, for example, has there never been an inquiry into how West Coast does so much better at home compared to interstate, etc etc?ย  Last night was a tough game, fought hard, except for the one-sided interventions of the part-timers.

Not sure there were any absolute standouts to be fair. We tend to mark Oliver, Petracca and Gawn too critically. 30, a goal at 80 percent ain't bad going.

I was ferocious about several umpiring decisions at the ground on Anzac Eve. After watching the replay, I have to concede that the blocking for Fritta's high mark was there. The free against May for rough contact on the members wing was there. However, the non 50 to ANB for being bear-hugged to the ground seconds after marking was an umpiring screamer, as was the non-free for a push-out in a marking contest to Grundy at the Punt Road end. I could go on to mention at least three blatant incorrect Richmond disposals that the umps turned a blind eye to etc. etc. The lesson for me is that my own red & blue glasses cause some irrationality where umpiring is concerned, however, we are correct to suggest the standard of umpiring in our game sucked!

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven Mayย

    The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

    The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
