The player we all love to hate.

As suggested in another thread, I don't think he's been anywhere near our worst this year. In fact, when people have come on here to abuse players they've generally been Trav, Jamar, Brown, Ward and a whole host of others. But RARELY Godders.

This thread has started because I've already got one eye on 2008, and I'm juuuuuust starting to think there might be room for him.

While I wouldn't be sad to see him leave, there are about 10 players who I want to see the backs of BEFORE him, and with only a probable maximum of 6 draftees, 1 or 2 pre-season draftees, and Judd :) , that means 2 or 3 of my fantasy delistings will HAVE to stay.

In that regard, I think, desperate as it may sound, I think we need Godfrey. He's 26 and as such should be coming into his own as a player, and have 3-4 years of getting the best out of himself. He is by no means any worse a kick than a player like Stevie baker, who was much maligned for a long time, but is now among the best taggers in the comp, probably IS the best.

The crucial part here is the new coach. If it's still Daniher, going on what we've seen so far, Godfrey will be a senior listed demon in 2008. If there's a new coach, he's still a chance, but I can see him being overlooked because of his appalling kicking skills.

For the record, I can't see us ever REGRETTING delisting the guy if that were to happen, but it's certainly an interesting topic to discuss. I think I might just retrieve it come season's end.

im as big a godfrey basher as there is, but this year has shown that there are a lot of others who possibly deserve to go before him, he probably cost stuff all to keep, would be happy to see him go wouldnt mind so much if he had a 1 year contract as remained as a back up player who was told he would only cover for injuries, bartram will be our tagger

The only reason Godfrey is on the list is because of Craig Camerons inability to draft a better midfielder to replace him, quite a concern i would think. Will play 100 games this year.....unbelievable.

Clint Bartram is Godders' heir apparent, and is undoubtedly a much better player. He's injured though.

If the seasons' delistings were going to happen now Godfrey would be safe, and I suspect it will remain the case at the end of the year. You can't delist too many players at seasons end, at risk of tipping the youth/experience balance the wrong way. If we delisted 4 + Godfrey then that essentially means he'd net us a 5th round pick. I think he'd be more useful to us than a kid taken in the 5th round.

Anyway, my point being we've got too much dead wood who will go before Godfrey does.

the player we love to hate?

I'd say his the player we hate to love. If only half our team played with the heart he does.

My sentiments exactly. Perhaps he's not as skilled as some of our other players, but while we're the walking wounded, i want go'ers in my team.

Heart alone does not cut it if you want to win a premiership, his ability and skills are well below par. You don't keep a backup player like Godfrey for 8 years. Can anybody name a poorer midfielder who has been on a list that long at any club?

I dont know about being Godfrey's 'heir apparent'... Give the boy a bit more credit than that!

I think Clint will walk straight into the James McDonald role... straight up. Same build, same shabby kick, same hard-as-nails attitude without the big body of Godfrey.

Point being, the boy can play. Not so much can be said of Godfrey's abilities...

I agree wholeheartedly DD, there are plenty of others who deserve the boot ahead of Godfrey.

He is an ordinary player, with an extraordinary attitude and application. That, in my mind, beats an above ordinary player who just goes.

Having said that, if we're a serious chance at a flag, he won't be getting a game in 2008.

He completely nullified one of the best midfielders in the competition today.

Shutting down Shaun Burgoyne is one of the toughest jobs in football. Not only that, he even managed to pick up more disposals than his direct opponent today!

He is in good tagging form at the moment, and he deserves some credit.

I agree with you Jaded, he held Burgoyne quiet this week and also Goodes the previous week, I think he is improving.

Every team needs a good Tagger, and that might be his niche.

I think Godders brings a little balance to our midfield. IMO we don't have enough players at the MFC who are willing to get under the skin of opposing players and really niggle at them. Godfrey is one such player. We would all love him to be better skilled, but i would say that there are others on par with him skill wise.

I wouldn't mind Godfrey on the list next year. There are a heap of guys we could delist, and no one has 30 great players and 10 young guns who need experience. Godfrey gives us decent depth, but I do hope that we get to the stage where he can't get a game because he's way back in the queue.

Has been doing the job the last couple of weeks and if he'd nailed that goal in the third he would have been getting some praise on here =) I think his disposal has improved in the last year or so, but it's still not great.

He was close to our best player against Freo after watching the replay.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
