This is the second worst week of the football year.

the first is the week after going out in straight sets.

the second is waiting for it all to begin, reading and hearing all the drivel by the commentators trying to fill column inches.  Enough already!  Time to get on with the real stuff.

Go Dees!

I don't mind this week with the anticipation building and our thirst for footy about to be quenched.

The pre-finals bye is a dreadful week IMO.

You are right in a way. All the commentators base their conclusions/narrative on round one. It's all so black and white for them. Lose round one and look forward to a mini crisis. Win, and you can be early premiership favourites.

I love the building excitement of this week, and besides, we’ve got the Demonland Season Preview poddy tonight, and that just adds to the sense of anticipation.  Go Demons!

A week or two out from the first practice match would be worst week imo.  People are still slow (from the end of last year) and whilst interest is picking up there's a lot of barrel scraping for content.  It also feels agonisingly far away from the proper start of things.

Yeah this week is a good one for footy fans. A new season, new possibilities. Enjoy it for what it is before the 6 months of stress each weekend kicks in.

The commentators remind me of the character Stephanie (an egg) from the Estonian surrealist film Night of the Carrots (Porgandite Öö) by Priit Pärn.

I want to live in a world where that is relatable.

The worst week in football is easily when Colinwood play Essendrugs in a granny.

Fortunately, that will never happen again.

I agree. Absolute momentum killer. (And for those of us living in Victoria, the State Government has also come to the momentum-killing party by making the day before the Grand Final a public holiday.)

The worst week in footy is the week immediately after Melbourne's last game for the season, unless we've won the Premiership.

HQ wanting to dominate the media 365 days of the year is to blame for this.

For those with a statistical interest, the combination of Collingwood v Essendon in a Grand Final has happened 6 times. The most common occurrence is Melbourne v Collingwood with 7. There are a number of combinations which have happened 6 times, including Melbourne v Essendon plus Carlton/Colingwood, Richmond/Collingwood and Geelong/Collingwood.

Interestingly, this actually is the worst week of the season. In particular, this year, one has tolerated the increasing column inches to death where - outside of Demonland subscribers - we are being deceived and misled.

Needed this rec a few weeks ago when looking for something to do!  Now there's too much footy to focus on haha

You lot are depressing.

Just wait for the post game commentary win or lose particularly lose.

sparrow anb  spargo you take your pick...

He stunk it up!!!

Putrid!!!!

BBB should of been retired years ago.

T/Mac cant get a touch.

May arguing too much with his team mates.

Petracca clearly injured.

Gawn slow ,Grundy too slow.

Why was Melks in the team. Must still be holding pics on someone.

Pickett clearly overrated. Barely sighted the ball in the 2nd half.

That umpiring decision was a howler.

All hell will break loose if we lose on Saturday.

That's 24 worst weeks in footy by my calculations.

Fair go @Deebauched. That was no post game commentary. Quarter time more like it. This is Demonland after all.

… or he’s kidnapped Goody’s dog.
Or Goody plays his favourites.
Or Goody loves his Essendon mates, et cetera, et cetera, et bloody cetera.

Last Alice game, vs Port, Melksy ran down and caught, and lay a beautiful tackle on a much younger and fitter Port player on the wing. Someone on here said meh, my grandma could’ve done that. Pretty funny right? Sadly I think the poster was serious.

Hashtag enough with the Melksy bashing

End of rant for now

I've never been a fan of the week off between the final weekend of practice matches and round 1. Ruins any momentum and hands the NRL a free kick so to speak in terms of ratings, media exposure etc..

Do the clubs truly need a week off after just one full game and a hit and giggle the previous week?

They could look at having a split round 1 where 3 or 4 games are played over the labor day weekend and the balance the week after so clubs are still getting that week off.

What I think will happen in the coming years is that we'll go to 24 games (25 rounds) with round 1 commencing labor day weekend and a couple of lower profile VIC clubs will take part in the public holiday game.

I wonder whether ground availability might be a problem? Does cricket need any of the grounds before the (modern-day) traditional mid-March start? Marvel Stadium and some other non-cricket grounds would be available, but could the AFL schedule many games if there is no certainty as to the availability of the MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval, etc?

That's the one thing that kind of annoys me, NRL starting first.

In the past they would have played a pre season competition and the week off made sense, not so much now.

Not so crash hot on a split round to start the season though. Let them all start at the same time and give hungry footy fans the big buffet!

Early autumn when the leaves start to change colour, red and dark ales reappear on tap and a new footy season is within touching distance is easily the best time of the year to be alive.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
