In my case, I'd get pinged for wasting time.

My oldest daughter has just recently moved out of home and up to Melbourne for uni, so I'm taking a bootload of of her stuff to her apartment late Saturday arvo.  We'll then grab a feed somewhere local to her before training it in to the G where we may or may not meet up with my oldest son who is definetely going, but he's not sure if he'll be hanging with his mates or us.

Like everyone here, we've been hanging for the season to start for so long now and have talked about it so much.  Can't wait.

Is it concerning that more than half of us die hard supporters aren't going to the game?

absolutely zero judgment for the many and varied reasons you all can attend. I myself was going to miss but for some good work misfortune

60K plus and ill be happy.   50 point smashing, ill be even happier

Spewing I can't go but my son wanted to have his birthday party at home instead of going to the footy so home it is. It also means there's another 6 or 7 of my family who won't be going either.

I also have a christening on the same afternoon as the Swans game in round 3 so because of all our interstate games the first one I'll get to go to is ANZAC Eve! Gonna make sure I get there for as many games for the rest of the year after that, it's going to be a good season I feel and I want to make sure I'm there to enjoy it.

Personally, prep for round one started a few weeks ago at the first of three DA working bees where (among many other things) we went through all our gear in readiness for the season. Well, it really began at the end of last season since not a week goes by without some manner of DA activity. And yes, meeting up for a liquid lunch constitutes DA activity. 😝

I’m currently on my way to Collingwood because the real prep starts today at 3pm for our first (official) banner-making for the year! Yay! Spirits are always sky-high at banner but I think today will be next level. ❤️💙

I was. And when I got home I burned the clothes I’d been wearing. One can never be too careful.

Got some seats with the fam in the Ponsford Stand. Great to be here after twenty years overseas ... tho can somebody do something about the cost of rent? 😉

Can you give us an early scoop @WalkingCivilWar on the most important data between now and the first bounce - what's going to be on the banner? Even a small hint?

There will be red and blue...

I’m putting this down to a joke gone wrong.

Very bad attempt at humour

Winery Lunch in Red Hill, drive up the highway, train to the G, stand behind M19, drink lots of beer, hurtle abuse at Neal Bullen and the men in yellow no doubt, and be happy that footy is back.

OK but this is just between you and me. Don’t tell anyone else! Especially the ppl on Demonland; they can’t keep their big traps shut. 😁

One side has a huge HERTZ logo under which “GO DEMONS” is sitting on its lonesome. That’s because the Hertz wants what the Hertz wants (see what I did there?).

The main side acknowledges that our game this Saturday marks the 3000th game played on the ‘G. Not our 3000th game, but the 3000th game, the majority of which we probs played anyways.

Again, QD… you didn’t hear this from me.

Mum's the word @WalkingCivilWar. Having said that, I know a few 'Landers and they are all thoroughly decent chaps. Can't mention names of course - I know you'll understand. But that red-head is a thoroughly decent chap. Went to the right school you know. And the one with the pony tail, we had the rules changed at the Club to have him admitted. Thoroughly decent chap. And the son of . . . . what's his name . . . oh you know, very decent lad. Very stable, predictable, steady hand on the tiller - just the chap we need heading up the Firm. Gave him his own underground carpark. Anyway - got to go now WCW - meeting some of the developers down at Sorento.

I have nfi what you’re on about QD, but I love you all the same. 😘

About that. There’s also a lot of white with the red and blue. Too much white for mine. I told my Army General, “The Doggies will like our banner, it’s in their colours.” She said, “Better than the faded old tablecloth they call a banner.”

It is, it's like something out of a dystopian tv show only the activity is pleasurable.

I'm in Sydney and won't be getting to see any matches live until later in the season. My plans stereotypically include a charcuterie board and some wine.

As usual I shall manoeuvre my prodigious buttocks into my reserved seat on Saturday and drink plenty of overpriced beer. I expect Moonshadow ( a defrocked Demonlander) will also be there ...and possibly Biffen ( also a defrocked Demonlander).

I expect nothing less than a comfortable victory over the denizens of Melbourne's less salubrious barrio .

I have a newborn son, and my train line is undergoing major works, so I won't be attending matches until later this year. TV for me for a few months.

My little guy will be decked out in a Demons onesie watching his first game of footy on tv Saturday night.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
