A few observations:

• Ben Brown played a mixed bag. He got a lot of free kicks in Q4 for doing what he does best - long leads and long arms, which meant the defender gave away those free kicks. In other words, he earned those frees by playing the game his way. Also, in the first half I thought rather than playing an ordinary game, he played as a decoy forward which allowed Grundy and Gawn to thrive as forwards
• if Tom McDonald continues to take all the ruck contests close to goal, we'll lose most of them. However, this might not matter as it allows us to have at least one ruckman a kick behind the play which will make it hard for the opponents to clear the ball
• I know Petty was outplayed in the last quarter. Until then, though, I thought he was absolutely dominant
• ANB was outstanding
• I loved the mixing and matching of the on ballers in the centre square. Whereas 2021 we thrived on consistency, in 2023 we might benefit from the variety 
• I found Chandler to be a disappointment. I expected more from him
• Hunter has been a great pick up

Really liked the improvements with ANB’s skills over the summer and hopefully it continues for the rest of the season. 

Thank god we are not just bombing it out from the kick ins to Max anymore  it was doing my head in. It’s good to have different strategies and it seemed to work  

What is going on with Fritsch why hasn’t he played preseason???

Luci, while I agree in principle with what you say, I would have thought that Chandler was better placed than any player on the ground to know the nuances of the winds at Casey and realistically what he can and cannot kick there distance wise. 

 

Watched the replay again this morning just to make sure my observation was still on par with how how I felt watching it yesterday 

1. Steven May is on his way to a 3rd All Australian off the back of the last 2 games. He's a giant down back. Looks incredibly fit.

2. Jake Bowey is now a seriously good player and opposition clubs will start putting time into him. He reads the play so well off half back and isn't afraid to drift across and take an intercept mark. He'd best 22, and an important one now.

3. I thought ANB work rate was first class. Liked him playing in the midfield and didn't seem so rushed and hesitant as he has been in the past. His ability to put work his opponents through his sheer running power will come in handy as teams start to run out of gas towards the end of the year.

4. Petty looks fit and significantly bigger in size. Got outmarked towards the end by a no name. But i put that down to Samson probably not being on their list of players to watch whilst reviewing for this week's game. I think he just caught Petty off guard.

5. McVee was surprisingly not overawed by manning one of the greatest players we've seen this decade in Dusty. Kept his composure and thought he halved a few contests well. Coaches would have been wrapped with his performance. 

6. The Gawn Grundy combo certainly overawed their rucks and defence. I know I've had my concerns with how this combination would work but fair to say it was a success yesterday. Grundy is still on managed minutes due to his huge lay off from injury while Gawn looked imposing and strong up forward. Grundy has a history of smashing Tim English so will be interesting to see how this goes against the dogs.

7. I thought Laurie was disappointing. Saw nothing that says he's close to being AFL ready. Concerning for me.

8. Ben Brown still worries defenders and that was justified when he was getting all those free kicks. He'll still get the 1st or 2nd best defender which then means this could release Gawn/Grundy to have significant impact up forward.

9. Woewodin came on an made an impact straight away. Did not once look overawed and I have no doubt this puts him right in thr frame for an early senior debut. Showed more in 1 quarter then what Laurie did for the 3. Its potentially exciting that we could have a Woewodin running around on the G again.

10. We looked 2 levels above Richmond and this was without Salem, Fritsch Viney which is genuinely exciting and scary. So pumped for the season ahead if we can stay fit.

We only need one KPF or ruck  or other forward to drop form or get an injury to give him a chance. There is no sense in him playing all year at Casey. He needs the challenge of AFL this year for sure. Your thinking is even more negative than Goody's about giving young Casey players a go in the AFL. 

JVR deserves to have this season a go in the AFL as you said he is young. 

He can debut and see if he is up to it and learn along the way. 

Yes, if to cover injuries/resting players, otherwise he waits. I would be ok with him coming in when we are 3 games clear at the top of the table with 2 games to play and his form warrants it. Playing devils advocate; if Schache catches fire at Casey and kicks more goals/performs better than JVR, I would bring Schache in as cover.

Viney got weeks for a similar move a couple years ago.

The wind wasn’t that great that it was seeing balls sail through, I’ve seen him regularly kick over that distance throughout last year…

To say it’s low value if it’s a point, can’t be accurate as it’s more on the action of it being deemed low value, irrespective of the result…if he kicks the goal, is it then a good shot?

you’re spot on about hitting people up, but running into the 50 with no one in front of them, I don’t necessarily think it’s a terrible choice - especially if he doesn’t have people leading at him…but that’s just me

It appeared to me that Chandler was under instruction to have shots at distance rather than looking for a lead-up or drop in a hole option because there were a couple of short passes available that he ignored.

All excellent points dazzler - agree with all. 

You might have noted it elsewhere, but i'm surprised you didn't highlight the how direct we were and how many kicks there were to the corridor (and to to top of the goal square too)

I don't mean that as knock in any way, only that being more aggressive was something you were hoping to see this season IIRC. Adding quality kicks like Hunter and Mcvee, and Bowey in top form, makes the corridor kick a much better percentage play. And against saints it was mainly the better kicks taking it on.

But in this game it seemed to me more players were taking that kick on. With some mixed results it must be said - there were some clangers which resulted in turnovers in the centre square, eg Gus, but the tigers didn't make us pay

It's interesting that you say we looked levels above the tigers - i thought the same in both practice matches, particularly in terms of fitness and condition. Neither tram could go with us late in quarters. By god they look incredibly fit.

No idea but certainly haven't seen much of Goodwin from a media perspective at all this preseason.

Pleased we’ve worked on greater midfield rotations and variety this pre season: at times last year we looked stale in there and went to the well with the same group too much. Interesting that Ooze admitted that part of our drop off was the midfield group getting tired as the season went on too.
