I assume McKay gets NM ND3.ย

The AFL have the compensation in a black box for a reason - it can spit out anything they want.

It's been discussed a lot on here already, but Frawley and McKay are not comparable and it's braindead that idiots in the media like Barrett keep referring to that compensation as a reference point for McKay. We might have got overs for Frawley, but he was a mile ahead of McKay. McKay is more comparable to Tomlinson at this point.

Ben McKay has played 65 games across 7 seasons and is 26 years old soon. Frawley at the same point in his career had played 139 games and was All Australian, and won a premiership with the Hawks at 26. Frawley was also a runner up in our BnF and had multiple top 10 finishes. So more than twice as many games and achieved both individual and team success.ย

McKay is injured more often than not, and when he does get on the park heโ€™s not exactly lighting it up. Heโ€™s essentially a less durable and less successful but taller version of Tomlinson at this point. If he didnโ€™t share genes with Harry, he probably wouldnโ€™t be on a AFL list anymore. [censored] he's played less games and achieved less individually than Oscar McDonald did! On output and potential, he's probably worth a 3rd rounder.

Captain Obvious says that future event had no bearing on the compensation pick we received for him.

In breaking news, dockers fans showing signs of fatigue.

Conversely dees fans get a pep in their step with every game freo lose.

Well done picking that out of the myriad of facts and evidence put forth in the post. Obvious indeedย ๐Ÿฅดย That point aside, the other facts show they're not similar quality or experienced players and compensation shouldn't be comparable.ย

On the Freo death ride, it seems very likely now that we'll finish with pick 4. They've got a bunch of players now being written off for the year or "managed", so it's unlikely they'll win many if any games from here. Their weak percentage helps too.

Thanks to Peter Bell as usual. He's so ineffective as a footy manager that one could make a reasonable argument he's working undercover to sabotage the place!

Darcy and Fyfe done for the year.ย ย

Cox will miss the next 2 weeks

They play Cats, Lions, Port in the next 5

PUT A FORK IN THEM!!

Love this post I saw on Freo's BigFooty today:

"Pick 4 going to Melbourne makes me physically ill.
Not even the most pessimistic of supporters last October in trade week could have seen this coming.
I thought maybe it could be pick 9 or 10 and that would still be expensive but I could live with that.
Jason Taylor and the Dees recruiters must be laughing their asses off at us. We are the gift that keeps on giving as far as Melbourne list management is concerned.
If thereโ€™s any semblance of pride and anger left in our club we have to try win 3 or 4 more games and push that pick out a bit. Avoidance of ridicule if nothing else"

probably a dumb question, but why do they say pick 4 and 23, instead of pick 4 and 22?

North have a second round compo pick they on traded to Freo

Thatโ€™s better.

The cream on top will be if WC can knock them over...and it is possible. It will be WC's GF.

Fremantle's part in this trade is starting to look like a Russian 'goodwill gesture' rout.

They may want to win but the real question is, Can they?

freo are having a 2019 season

but instead of drafting jackson, pickett and rivers, we have their picks lool

Need I answer that?

Like us in 2019, Freo are in a rebuilding phase - players in for surgery early , experimenting with players in new roles, trying new strategies, giving some young players a run, working out who to cut etc etc.

Clever, as its not really tanking as such, but has the same benefit of ensuring a high draft pick to bring in a gun or package up draft picks to say to do what we did and trade in a player of Ed Langdon's quality to fill a clear need and a grab a second round gem like Bowey.

Well played Freo.

Oh, hold on. I think I've got that wrong.

The dees get all the same benefits of our 2019 season, but none of the pain of finishing 17th - and in addition to freo's first and second round draft pick, we get our ownย first and second round draft pick!ย

Sorry, not sorry Freo.

If it is any consolation Freo, i will be forever grateful and you will always have special place in my heart for the joy you have brought dees fans.ย  ย

Also, as further consolation my purple friends, pick four has terrible record of producing decent players.

Oh, hold on. I think I've got that wrong.

Nick Daicos went at four in the 2021 draft as did George Wardlaw in 2022. But don't fret my little anchors, both have probably hit their ceiling.

And yes, we might trade up to get the most promising forward in the draft for many a year, but again don't let the angst overwhelm you - number one draft picks have mixed record of going on to be superstars.ย

And whilst a forward line featuring JVR, Jefferson and Reid is simply a mind blowing thought, it is a few years away from being a reality, which gives you, my darling dockers, several seasons of fully bottoming out to grab some high draft picks you can actually keep (unless of course Bell decides to trade them for English because you need an elite ruck with Darcy heading East because Bell brought in a young, not yet proven ruck to take his minutes and salary).ย ย

Hawthorn losing the unlosable last week ย still annoys me haha.

This thread has been a real hoot.ย  Schadenfreude is so satisfying. From my perspective its been worth trading Jackson purely for the joy of laughing at Freo.

Life will be a little emptier next season without the death ride. I reckon we should trade another player to Freo or another club this trade period for their future picks so we can keep this death riding show on the road.

Donโ€™t cry because the ride will end, be glad that we were able to ride it together.

Can a future 3rd round pick have its own thread?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
