Melbourne are contemplating trading a future first round pick on draft night as they battle with a number of clubs to get hold of the Giants' valuable No. 19 selection, which will launch the second night of the AFL national draft.

    I assume they think they have a good chance that George will be still available. It would be a good night if we can pick up George as well as a key tall.

    Not a fan of this move this year. Next year is supposedly a super draft, and we’d be trading a pick that will be anywhere from pick 10-18 in that draft for pick 19 in a weaker draft.

    Usually a fan of trading forward as we’ve done previously as it enables you to get a year of  development into a youngster. Not this draft period though.

    That could be problematic, as it has been suggested that Giants may want George. If they don’t, then 19 might get him, if that’s who we want. We could even get an earlier pick from Giants if they don’t want him and we promised to take him with the earlier pick. It would cost us 37 and F1st. My info is that Giants want Gruzewski at around 19 so it’s interesting.

    We do have a good relationship with the Giants clearing Toby and Preuss        recently.

    If it was to happen, I wonder if it would be an on the night trade, when they know exactly who is still available.

    If we have identified a player we want and we can trade up for him, do it.

    Perhaps we think the big Jeffer may be available at 19? Cal Twomey's recent rankings suggested the possibility. 

    Where does he go? Melbourne has been linked to Jefferson at pick No.13. Sydney and the Giants could consider him given they have multiple picks but he could also be available deeper into the top 20. 

    Where does he go? Has interest in the teens, including from Sydney, Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney. Hard to see George slipping far into the second round despite the knee.

    Can't edit my original post, but first link to running defender Jakob Ryan in the article:

    Melbourne already have pick 13, on top of No.37 in the second round, and are showing interest in defender Jakob Ryan and forwards Matt Jefferson and Brayden George. The Demons picked emerging forward Jacob van Rooyen with selection 19 in last year’s draft.

    Well, according to the article we also have some interest in Jakob Ryan, a tall back who is pretty quick and is a good kick.

    If Sydney are interested with George. There is a strong possibility we will take George at 13. Initially, I would love to get Hewett. But now, I believe we have our hearts set on George, as we are hoping to get pick 19 as well. This is becoming a real game of chess now.

    They don't need much elsewhere either. Very strong list ATM. Key position depth would be ideal for them but it's not the best draft for it.

    This years draft brings me back to the 2014 draft where there is a mirror image of Brayden George and Jake Lever. Lever would've been a top 3-4 pick if not injured in his draft year. There was also the failed trade attempt of Jack Trengove (pick 13 Richmond pick) to select Lever. We are here again with Brayden George. Injured in his draft year. I have no inside knowledge this. But I believe we are very hot on George now.

    Not really a fan of giving up 2023 first rounders. Can George realistically fall that low as well?

    Smart planning. Better to have an option in place. As for giving up 2023 picks we need to remember they are effectively 3 years away from being contributors.

    Our two F1 are most likely to be in the 14 - 18 range.  Doubt GWS will accept just a F1 for pick #19.  They will want something else which could be a F2 depending on which of our two F1 is offered and what other clubs are offering.

    Unless they get an 'offer they can't refuse' GWS will hold on to #19 until the first round of the draft is over when they will have all night and next day to negotiate the best deal.

    So doubt there will be any news before the first round of the draft is over.

     

    As an aside, draft pick swaps are closed until the start of the draft itself.  Lots of wheeling and dealing in the meantime...

    Looks like he’s a bit further down at this (very early) stage. Might scrape into 2nd, but the depth next year is projected to be v good.

    Media reports are saying it is a F1.

    If we are able to get #19 before the first round of the draft is over we will have some leverage to get value for it from other teams by on-trading it at the end of the night.

    If GWS hold it until the end of the first round I don't see us getting any more value for it in an 0n-trade than GWS would get.

    So I'm not sure where the value of #19 is for us.

    If a player we want slides or we want another pick in the late 1st early 2nd round I would think we target their pick 15 or 18 or WCE #20 which don't have the premium #19 does. .

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
