The Casey Demons have a trio of Dandenong Stingrays players down at training in the hope of securing a contract and joining the VFL premiers in 2023:-

• Melbourne Next Generation Academy and Vic Country player Finn Emile-Brennan (18, 181cm) averaged 22.1 disposals, 4.7 marks and 7.1 rebounds in 15 matches for the Stingrays and also played down back for Vic Country in the Under 18 National Championships;

• Ned Moodie (18, 188cm) had 15.5 touches, 4.7 marks and 3.7 rebounds in 11 NAB League matches games;

• Ziggy Toledo-Glassman (18, 192cm) picked up 10.8 possessions and kicked 14 goals in eight appearances. Was in the Vic Country squad.

• We can also expect to see a number of 2022 AFL Demon draftees on display at Casey Fields during the coming season.

In other news -

• 2022 Premiership coach Mark Corrigan has taken up the coaching job at Geelong VFL and has been replaced by his senior assistant Taylor Whitford.

• Some retired and delisted MFC players will be suiting up elsewhere. Leading goalkicker Mitch Brown will be with Southern league club Mordialloc while Fraser Rosman has signed with Port Melbourne for 2023 and Jake Spencer who was called out of State league retirement for a surprise appearance for the Demons just before the finals will continue on locally this year, switching to Northern team Montmorency. 

• Premiership defender Matt Buntine will remain on the list but expects to spend more time coaching at Casey Fields and playing VAFA for Caulfield Grammarians.

• Casey listed mainstays Mitch White and Jimmy Munro who were captain and vice-captain in their 2022 Grand Final triumphs will be back to defend their premiership flags. Tom Freeman is also expected to re-sign despite playing just three matches last year.

KC - the news is much appreciated but there’s one thing that seems to be missing. The three players you’ve mentioned are all from the Dandenong Stingrays but the Casey Demons also draw players from the Gippsland Power and I would have expected some good players who were overlooked in the draft to also be training at Casey from that club as well. Jonti Shuback (mentioned above) is the obvious one that comes to mind but there must be a few others.

There’s still a possibility that another Dandenong Stingrays gun, Mitch Szybkowski, could end up at Casey. He’s been training for one of a supplemental selection spot at Essendon but he has some competition for a place there. The Bombers also have Oakleigh Chargers ruckman Hudson O'Keeffe and East Fremantle’s Jack Cleaver as well as former Magpie and Hawk midfielder Tom Phillips trying out for one spot.

Definitely good to see young Ned Moodie as likely to come on to the Casey list.  He looked like a solid lad, with good skills and was hard at the footy. Saw him play only three times in 22 but looked like a player.

The simple answer to your question about players from the Gippy Power is that their best players were either drafted, are too young or simply not good enough. Jonti Shuback is possibly the exception to that rule.

Paul Amy has Tweeted that Casey have signed two Gippsland Power players Paddy Cross (19, 181cm) and Rhys Galvin (18, 188cm) with a third ex-Power player on the way too (but via an interstate club).

Thanks KC. Interesting additions. Cross is a midfield running type and Galvin is a strong midsized defender.  Galvin should be a chance to get a debut as he’s physically ready to play (depending of course on MFC player availability). 
 

No news on Jonti Schuback? 
 

@KC from Casey Have we heard whether Miles Shepherd is returning.  He was very good in a few games and I was thinking if he had another year at Casey and got more game time , he might elevate to be looked at as a rookie chance at end of “23.

Fairly different team. No Bedford, Baker, Mitch Brown or Ellison. Probably no Chandler who should get game time in the ones.

The Bombers had been trialling Oakleigh Chargers ruckman Hudson O'Keeffe and Dandenong Stingrays captain Mitch Szybkowski across January, but the club opted to end those auditions last week.

At one stage early last year, Szybkowski was considered a contender for a top 20 spot in the 2022 AFL National Draft but in the ruthless world of AFL football, he was overlooked in the end and couldn’t even win a rookie position at the Rookie Draft. Word was that while he was built like a bull, he lacked pace and the X factor to progress at AFL level.

As mentioned by BangBnagBang, both he and Oakleigh ruckman O’Keefe were released today by Essendon from their SSP train on places.

Being a local from the Stingrays, Mitch might find it an aid to his future development to join Casey where he might rub shoulders with some of the game’s best midfield beasts in the organization.

Szybkowski's problem is not a lack of X-factor it's that he is a defensive liability in tight, he offers no spread from stoppages, he ducks his head in marking contests too often and doesn't bodyline ball carriers in tackling situations.  He is a good linkman and loping around midfielder with good kicking skills, but his game doesn't translate easily enough to the AFL. He is not quick enough to play in the positions where his best attributes would shine and his deficiencies are too worrisome to consider him as an AFL midfielder.  It was a travesty he was starting in the midfield for Vic Country ahead of Hugh Bond - a braveheart tackling machine in an under midfielder with clean hands who the Crows drafted and has apparently been impressive training for them.  Of course, how people who said Szybkowski was a top 10 standard player are still given oxygen to write on football matters is a travesty but there is no accountability in that part of the industry or social media.

Rhys Galvin is an interesting player.  Probably the best full back in the NAB League last year but not the desirable body shape (187cm, 100kg) to garner AFL interest.  Still, the best forwards struggled with him the most.

Paddy Cross is a good, consistent midfielder but as an over-ager needed more elite attributes to be in the reckoning.

Schuback is trying his luck in the SANFL.

It has been reported that Dandenong Stingray Mitch Szybkowski signed with Frankston. That’s probably his best chance of playing VFL footy in 2023.

A handful of Casey Demons players will get their opportunity to showcase themselves during the six period match simulation for Melbourne against St Kilda at RSEA Park, Moorabbin tomorrow.

Trent Burgoyne from Port Adelaide and Max Gregory from the Dandenong Stingrays will be making their debuts in the colours. It’s good to see premiership player Matt Buntine on board again as there were some whispers that he might be concentrating on Caulfield Grammarians in the VAFA.
