Casey Demons off season

Only quarter by quarter updates on Casey Facebook.  No photos. Old 2022 pics.
Only news is Tigers won by a point. No mention on the Casey action or goals or players. Very low key social media at Casey.  Twitter update was left at qtr time score.  It’s very very poor.  Not sure if it’s a lack of interest or a lack of capability. Unfortunately  I think the former.

My major criticism of the merger of the Casey Scorpions into the property of the Melbourne Football Club was the destruction of the club that was once a separate entity with a heart and soul of its own. If the Casey Demons was still a club that treasured its community involvement in the local area and its wider catchment, there would be so many additional benefits accruing. One of those things would be the fact that there would be no shortage of supporters coming to games and telling the world how their local team was traveling and which of their players was doing well and which was having a bad day - even in practice matches. Instead, we get nothing.

I see Brisbane have provided a full match summary from their VFL game last night.

Meanwhile there's been just crickets from ours regarding yesterday's game..

I have no idea how JVR performed yesterday but there is vision on YouTube of him taking an imposing clunk at half forward at the Southern end in yesterday’s game.

Something to look forward to at AFL level.

Went looking and if it's the same video I watched, shot off a smart phone, there wasn't a whole lot of vision but did have that impressive mark and also JvR slotting two set shots. The filmer, a well known demon fan, then states Schache was probably in the bests with 5 goals.

Not sure if I'm allowed to link these sorts of videos but you can find it easily on YouTube.

JvR improved as day went on..some impressive "clunks".

Schache let himself down when, with less than a goal in it, with the ball in contest in their forward half, he thought he would protest the absence of a free kick to him, rather than compete for the ball. Richmond possession.

Casey players:

Burgoyne did similar to Schache early in game when he nonchalantly jogged along behind a ball that looked like it might go out. It didn't. Richmond waltz in, grab it and goal.

Goonan competed very well. As always, Munro in it all day. Mitch White was missed and is needed back in team. George Grey injured early, little impact but very clever goal late in game. Roan Steele competed quite well, marred by a sloppy return of ball to a Richmond player which resulted in a 50m penalty to tigers and a goal.

Team will improve on that performance.

Great to see. Love practice game atmosphere.  Very relaxed.  Fans get to see their heroes. Youngsters getting photos and autographs and high 5s.

I remember Peter Giles parked his car next to us down at Edithvale during a practice game in about 1980. He jumped the fence after the game and had a quick chat to my family and I before saying he was off to a friends birthday party. No post game debrief in those days.

Sounds like the new coach has to work on some discipline issues early in his coaching stint. There were too many slip ups in that brief resume, any one of which could have been avoided and might have changed the result given that it was a 1 point game in the end.

Poor form of Schache given he’s fighting for a place at AFL.

Im still of the opinion and sorry to the Springvale faithful out there, that the AFL need to reinvest in the old Reserves comp. Get rid of anyone not aligned to an AFL Club and this will also put paid to the PATHETIC VFL Match fixturing.

I think you're right simply because it's a no contest these days between a team that has say 16 full time AFL players in it vs a non aligned club with after work footballers. Mind you the Sharks seemed to do okay.

It was different when teams like Port Melbourne had money that allowed them to attract NQR AFL players.

Would love to hear some in depth discussion from those responsible for the competition as to what they are trying to achieve from it by bringing in the non aligned clubs. Is it simply to give a little exposure to the next rung of players. If so it's a very cumbersome method

How did the rest of the Melbourne list go? The bloke on the video said Schache kicked 5.

Interesting to see @Bystandermwntion one moment in which Schache has let himself and the team down, but absolutely no credit for his 5 goals. Sounds like he went alright and contributed much to the team’s performance, kicking half the total team goals.

Southport do “ok” due to money money and money. They attract players from other states. And guess where they get the money from ? Yes it’s the Clubs pokies !! I heard they have 300 machines. That’s how they compete.  I’d rather they stuck to QAFL and we get back to true VFL.

Understand but I thought the non aligned clubs had a salary cap that was not too flash.

A little more transparency would not go astray

Again I make the point which all the brain power in D/L fail to consider that Casey are not the same as Lions Tigers etc who are within  that AFL  Club wholly.

Until The two groups get together and it is arranged that some one will organise that a report be placed or forwarded to us for placement on the MFC website it's not going to get any priority,  Or a member of "Melb media" does it.

Very fair comment. I should have acknowledged the 5. But the incident I spoke of was within a couple of minutes of final siren.

There were quarterly score updates on the Casey Demons facebook page, but nothing else. Really poor from both clubs when they should be taking every opportunity to promote themselves ahead of a new season.

Also, I wonder how much money Casey lost by running out of beer on the weekend.

I think MFC had 15-16 players in the Casey game yet no updates.  That’s the disappointing part.  The only news so far is from the “unofficial” update being that Schache kicked 5.    Hoping either the Casey or MFC media get a summary or wrap or some player highlights.

100% agree. I think you create the 'Eastern Football League', which is essentially just the reserves teams for each of the afl teams. Start the season at the same time and have it run almost identical in length etc to the AFL. It's a shamozzle atm and some players have multiple byes and unable to stake their claim for a spot.

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.
