I don’t like the implied criticism of Fritta. I thought it was unfair right through the season. He is there to kick goals, not to give them away. In fact, I think the murmur of criticism of him for being selfish got to him and he ended up giving away some critical opportunities to try and be unselfish which cost us a game or two. Sooner or later, someone has to take the shot – so often, with other players we would see the ball being handpassed around and around looking for the perfect opportunity; Fritta is there to take the opportunity and kick the goal.

Sadly, you’re spot on. ☹️

Thanks for the endorsement, WCW – I read your posts, and your opinion is one that I highly value.

However, when I read my original post, I’m not sure I was being completely clear and I hope you agree with my intention - I was trying to say that after the murmur of criticism, in my view he gave away opportunities, trying to show unselfishness, when he should have been more “selfish” and kicked the goal. I hope that is what you are agreeing with.

If there's one player i we'll never bag for being a hog being a player to have the shot at goal more than anyone...... besides Kozzie.... play like ALLEN JAKOVICH and take the shot yourself Fritta. Be Goal Hungry.  I agree totally OllieFan.

Fritta's role is to kick goals. I believe that his eyes and mind are always on a goal kicking opportunity.

That he once ignored Tracc in a better position is not a failure. He was just doing his job.

It falls to his team mates to support him in this role by shepherding, leading oppos away, loud voices etc.

Six goals in a premiership buys a lot of indulgence..

Yeah, I did get your point and I do agree. It was almost like he was overcompensating and oftentimes it was to his own and the team’s detriment.

But at the same time I was also lamenting the fact that it certainly got to him outside of footy. Some members of the public clearly think footy players are fair game and can be verbally abused, even when celebrating a family member’s birthday at a restaurant and even with both sets of elderly grandparents there.

It definitely got to him in both respects.

Well, if that’s what happened to him, that is an absolute disgrace. If anyone saw him in public and didn’t do him the courtesy of leaving him alone, the only way to treat him would be to admire and praise his absolute class and elegance as a player.

A bloke who kicks 6 goals in a GF, including a quick 2 that started the revival that won the flag, then followed up by being the only AFL player to kick a goal in every round the next season is abused in a restaurant?

I cannot think of comment that won't get me suspended from Demonland.  Whatever you think I'm thinking  - triple it!

And yet there are problems that need to be rectified and I'm not talking about Fritta.

No dispute about some problems, 10 zip then  losing the 2 finals. you are correct and how we lost those games after half time.

Bur relying on G.H. for his opinion and insight.   You cannot rely on  Healy.    Turned his back.

Agree.

Fritter can hold his head up high as he had a fantastic year. But the criticism at the time was warranted for being selfish (the personal abuse definitely not).

Far more bigger concerns then Fritta and it was more around our game plan and system.

Backing Goodwin has reflected on this and will rectify over the summer.

I absolutely agree with you on this, Ollie.  I've never had the perception of Fritta ever being selfish, and I do think the media criticism of him hurt his confidence in that respect.  It's a big reason why players need to listen less to the media and more to their coaches. He has not been the issue.  I do think a bigger aspect this year has been the absence of TMac, and the leadership he provided - the forward line missed that once he was injured.  We need him fit and raring to go next year.

2 Dees to win Flag

3 Clarry to Win Brownlow

Avoiding the media and socials is one thing, but unless players stayed locked up at home 24/7 they’re gonna be subjected to all sorts. The incident to which I referred earlier is only one such. It’s just that that particular one really stood out since Fritta’s grandparents were there and who’d wanna hear their grandson being yelled at as “a selfish [censored]ing c**t”?

PS The loudmouthed undesirable got more than he bargained for when Fritta’s dad and uncle jumped to his defence. 😁

From the different members of the Fritsch family that I've met (including his lovely mum), why doesn't this surprise me!!  They're fiercely supportive of their boy! I've seen his grandma in the Redlegs room a number of times, she's a walking billboard of Fritta!

What dribble.  2 minutes I will never get back.  Everyone on this site has better insight than this........... even the DL snowflakes.

TBH I take what Gerard Healy says about Melbourne with a grain of salt.  We all know how much he hates the club, and has done since he left for the Swans!

Gerard Healy left the MFC not because of money but when Tom Hafey made a convincing story that the Swans were closer to a premiership than the MFC he left since he played in an era of 1979-1985 were success on the field was few far between.

I know we are getting off subject, but that final against the Swans in 87 was one of my fondest memories. I remember thinking, " I bet you're glad you left Gerard" ha ha

Surely having opinions and insights from someone like Healy, who has not aligned himself with the club for some time, is going to be more valuable than having insights from someone who still identifies themself as connected to the club?

I heard this segment live. I am still trying to work out what was actually said.
i don’t think Healy hates The MFC. He was offered a huge Contract from Dr Edelstien to go up North.
But yes, the memories of he and Greg walking off the MCG together in 1987 have always stuck

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
