Demonland wanted Goody sacked in 2019

2019?ย  I thought it was 2020 when DL became fever pitch on this.

Maybe they weren't entirely wrong as the President and at least one Board member were simultaneously in the throes of getting AFL approval to sack him.ย  So the DL angst wasn't entirely unfounded.

Nonetheless your point is very valid:ย ย  the clubs that back in their coach and stay the distance, support them properly are the ones that experience success.

So Ratten will get paid out a years wages or more and doesnโ€™t have to Coach the Saints again. Sweet deal!

Something doesn't add up.ย

Sack a coach straight after the trade period, when the attention is all on the trades that happened.

Maybe they didn't want to scupper any trades, though of course the go with that would have been to have a new coach in place.

They won't have a coach in place for the draft, or if they do that person would only have just arrived. And their draft board would be shaped by what type of players ratten wanted to bring in.

There's no way this was the plan

All smacks of damage control.

Not to mention 2020 and early 2021

The poor decision was giving him the deal in round 11. They got excited and thought they were top 4 bound

Ratten is a good coach but not sure he can take a team to success. not that their list is that goodย

They beat Freo away and Geelong and then only win 3 from the last 11 games. Bizarre club

I thought that too.

But having 3 ex senior coaches working for the senior coach probably wouldn't be the best mix of support for Goodwin.

Eventually that is going to happen somewhere given the number of coaches that get sacked every year!

How does ย Neal Daniherโ€™s famous quote go?

After all is saidโ€ฆ..

I'm wondering if we will see a Coach traded to another team as part of a soft cap dump. Honestly if Don's and St Kilda were more organised they could have simply swapped Rutten / Ratten and saved alot of $$$.

Only something St Kilda could do..

Only had to change one letter as well!

Any word on the reasons for Rattenโ€™s sacking?

Yeah, he wants to coach a better Club in Casey...

I am a mind reader and it's Grant Thomas for me @ The sinner Saints.

Tea readings start at $2,000 an hr if interested...

Not a bad point you make. Iโ€™d like to think we are mature enough as a club to make it work if heโ€™s the best fit.ย

Beginners error that always amuses me that it still happens.

Think Teague, and even Jeff 'the Geisch' Geischen from the old days.

There is rarely a need to re-sign coaches' mid-season. Unless there is a possibility that they jump ship (i can't ever remember this being the case) to another club it should never be done. wait until the season is over and then decide. Why do clubs fall into this trap so often?

John ย Northey, unsigned mid year.

A couple of St Kilda fans here at work are totally bemused with the news. Apparently the Saints were very close to acquiring DeGoey so sacking Ratten prior to trade period wouldn't have helped get DeGoey. That's if they had plans to sack him back then and he was also at the draft combine last week interviewing prospects. Bizarre.

He was an excellent midfield coach at MFC.

Perhaps he was sacked for using the expression "scoreboard nourishment"? Which would be reasonable.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturdayโ€™s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFLโ€™s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
