Kev 10,926 Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Some beautiful passages with slick/fast ball movement, kicking and handballs. Paxman didn't seem the same, though got plenty of outside disposals. Our tackling and second efforts are amazing. The opposition must be hearing footsteps whenever they have it and hope it is not Taylor or Birch. Some are playing the best that I've seen. Gillard needs to tighten up on her opponent. Not sure yet about Duffy, I want to see her compete in more one on ones. Love the Daisy chant. 1 1 Quote

Nascent 9,345 Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Great win. Didnt get to watch all of the game due to work but love how Libby Birch goes about it and that midfield is really starting to fire with some excellent ball use. Purcell, Paxman and Hanks are stars and what a luxury it is to have Hore and Daisy in the forward 50 next to Harris. Probably some of the best delivery inside 50 I've seen from this group. 5 Quote

Mickey 4,777 Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Libby plays angry. I don't mind it at all. It's not something you see alot in the AFLW. Again, some of the things that Hanks, Purcell and West do just make me shake my head. So clean with the ball. Two home games to hopefully sew up a top 2 spot. 2 Quote

deejammin' 2,420 Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Perfect win, 5 big outs, slippery humid conditions, travel, no worries. Just keep winning for a home final. With Adelaide playing the cats and Brisbane the pies two good 5 goal plus wins should see us on top! Go you good thing! On to the bombers! (Please, please, please smash them!) 5 1 Quote
Supermercado 2,806 Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 The centre clearance and kick to Hore for the second goal were superb. I already knew getting Harris and Birch from other clubs on the cheap was great business but Purcell has been fantastic. 7 Quote

Jak Hevron was terrific not talking all the time - THE ONLY callers i want to hear all the time r Dennis n Bruce from the good ol dayz! Quote

The players you mention above are all such natural footballers. Add daisy, paxy, bannon, heath and hanks (who has the one thing that only the best players have - time) and that is a significant core of highly skilled, hi footy iq players. I had more involuntary 'great kick' thoughts last night that I had all season with the men's team. Some brilliant weighted kicks to the forwards advantage. Including by Westy, my new favourite demon (accross all three teams) who last season could barely hit a target by foot. And some brilliant kicking for goal. How was that goal to Harris from the hand off by mitthen? The commentators didn't do that justice. Off one and a half steps, off balance, tackled and had to jink to her right and slightly kick on the outside of her foot. Nailed it from 40. Just fantastic. She's improving by the game 'bin'. Her kicking style will never be a thing of beauty but the effectiveness in kicking to position has come a long way in a short time. 6 Quote

She also seems to have found a yard in pace and now has some serious closing speed and speed away from the contest. This aspect and the better skills and connection, could be attributed to the extra dollars and importantly the extra time training together and developing individuals. 1 Quote

Her kicking style reminds me a player from the 80 or 90s, who i just cant place, who was a smooth right footer, but when he kicked on his left it looked like Westy's robo style. Said player was deadly accurate up to 30 metres with his left 2 Quote

Timothy Reddan-A'Blew 5,690 Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 This is worth a look, showcasing some pretty impressive development across the range of requirements of a top-level Australian Football team and top-level Australian Football players. There was still a fair degree of 'clunkiness' in the game as a whole, but this did make me go 'wow!: https://www.melbournefc.com.au/video/1238370/aflw-rd-8-all-the-moments?videoId=1238370&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1665895731001 2 1 Quote

Great win, especially considering the outs. Didn't miss a beat really. 15/21 who played in the GF earlier this year. How good is Purcell? I reckon even those who recruited her over wouldn't have expected such an output. Special mention to Mithen and Heath who upped the ante in others' absence. Same for Caris who came in with the right attitude for her opportunity (5 tackles) and will find game time one way or another next season. Staying on the tackles, West (11), Hanks (8) and Lampard (7) were great in that regard and certainly weren't alone. Mackin - she kicked a pretty special goal with her first kick on debut (that's debut in footy, not just the club!) in the practice game at the G against Carlton and she was so close again, her feet just got a bit ahead of her. Exciting stuff. Speaking of exciting, Zanker out of the ruck should have been a GOTY contender, but I guess I'm pretty biased. Overall, our field kicking was perhaps the best I've ever seen by us and potentially in the league - kicking to space, kicking to advantage, kicking to pinpoint, and being able to switch up between options. Excellent vibe around Daisy's 50th, only wish it could have been at home. We should look back at the day she was drafted to Melbourne as a very important one in our club history. She could have been a Bulldog and quite seriously, I think our team would be on a different trajectory - her fingerprints are all over our culture. This video captures the love and respect going both ways between captain and teammates (and gives a glimpse of what's going on under Paxman's bandage, yikes): 4 3 Quote

Before the very first AFLW draft I remember her and Gill McLachlan being interviewed and, this won’t be anywhere near verbatim, but Daisy said ‘I’m going to play for Melbourne’ and Gill said ‘nothing is for sure’ to which Daisy replied ‘well I won’t be playing for anyone else’ and then there was a bit of awkwardness. It was brilliant Yes, that was awesome! But...I think those comments were referring to the draft for the first AFLW season, when Melbourne had to re-select Daisy as a marquee signing - players didn't automatically carry over from the exhibition series, e.g. Ellie Blackburn who was a Demon in 2013 and signed as a marquee player for the Bulldogs for 2017. Daisy clearly had some sway! But I guess the luck/chance came into it way back when Daisy was drafted to us for the exhibition games, which set in motion that connection and not wanting to play anywhere else. Going back that step further, that draft order was decided (Wikipedia tells me!) by a coin toss. Whoever got the first pick was obviously always going to select Daisy. So whoever called that toss is the one we should be thanking! 1 2 Quote
