Can anyone guess who this player is - I've include profiles on the same player by two different people (hint: it’s not Cadman)

 

Profile 1:

X is the best key position forward in the draft. X has clean hands and marks the ball well overhead, due to his strong ball reading ability. After winning the (name) Medal, for the best player at the national championships, X’s name was put into contention for the number one pick. He is a perfect fit for the (club), a side screaming out for a key position forward. X has a clean set shot technique and had the most shots on goal this year, compared with any other draft prospect. At 199 centimetres, X moves well – running a beep test of 14.1 at the national combine indicating his strong endurance. He also has the ability to play in the ruck and will develop into a forward that has the capability to play as a back up ruckman if needed.

 

Profile 2:

X put his scores on the board early, and just kept kicking goals throughout this year to cement himself near the top of the draft order. The key forward is an excellent shot for goal, has a great engine plus the height to outmark most of the defenders he's matched up against. He kicked a record haul of 24 goals at the under-18 championships and is not a forward who needs heaps of touches to make a scoreboard impact.

You got it!  It's interesting to note how much everyone was salivating over him prior to the draft.  Not unlike Cadman now.  Not saying that Cadman won't be a good player... but it is interesting that North were willing to give up the chance to take him.  Are they idiots (almost definitely) or do they know the draft next year has better key forward options.

The big red flag with Schache was he’s 2m tall, runs all day, kicks it dead straight and no one cared that he wasn’t pick 1. If you have those attributes you’re either pick 1 or if somethings wrong then pick 10-15. 

Cadman is Roughead to me. Great athlete that covers up for a little lack of height. Great thick frame. Lovely hands. I don’t think he’s quite in the McKay/Curnow level of upside but a lot less down side than big Harry. Just a rock solid number 1.

North already have a solid number 1 though. I really believe in Larkey. They now get Wardlaw who is in that freakish level of talent for a mid and they can choose between outside mids, dynamic half forward/mids or a half back type. And they should be up and running quickly.

North also know they’re a good chance of getting a gun key forward prospect next year and either they get a Cadman type or they get someone with even more upside who walks in to a far better club/team.

I say we turn our attention to the 2023 draft try to get two picks inside 10 if possible. 

Or one inside 5 and one inside 15.

Operation land Zane Duursma.

It’s a question I’ve asked but nobody can give a definitive answer until some time in the future. Some are suggesting that next year’s draft will be stronger and deeper but I must say that I was personally impressed by the standard in the recent Vic Metro v Vic Country NAB Under 18 Championships game which showcased a number of this year’s top potential draftees (plus a few of next year’s crop). 

I’m still more in favour of drafting for now and I wouldn’t be ditching this year’s pick 13 for a future pick because, given our current standing, we can afford to pick a couple of players and have them develop over the next twelve months at Casey as we’ve done over the past couple of seasons.

Take for example, KPF prospect Matt Jefferson who is considered by many as the next key forward in line after Cadman who is beyond our reach. On what I’ve seen of Jefferson, he certainly has potential but isn’t physically ready to be thrown into the hurly burly as a key forward in the AFL. If we got him at 13 this year, we would reap the benefit of putting a season worth of teaching and experience into him. That would put us a year ahead of the game compared to any player we draft in 2023.

Don’t mind it but our window is now and we’ve got the draft capital unless both us and Freo finish high to get at least a top 5-7 2023 pick as is.

JT would have to think there’s not a solid talent at pick 13. I doubt that will be the case, someone he likes will be available

We have 34 senior and 3 A-rookies ie 37 players.  We are allowed a max of 42 so we can't have 5 senior list spots and 1 A rookie.

But I get your point - there are any number of combinations of player types within the rules.  To keep it simple I assumed the current mix which I think is what we will stick to mainly because there is less pressure on the sal cap.

Any likelihood that we trade next years 1st tied to freo (assuming we still have our first next year. I can’t keep up) and 13 to move up in this year’s draft?

I wouldn’t think so. 13 is a good position to be in this draft. And next years draft will be strong. We need to try bring a couple quality kids in. If we can land 2 out of 3 200 gamers goes a long way to securing our future. 

What are we thinking draft gurus?

To add to @Whispering_Jack‘s earlier post, if we fill some of the glaring list gaps this year, we can approach next year with absolute freedom and flexibility in using those picks on best available players, be it through trade or draft.

Jefferson may not excite everyone, but if the list management team believe he can be a good AFL key forward, then take him. It’s one of our bigger list deficiencies in the short-medium term. Given the strike rate of key forwards panning out with high picks, pick 13 is comparatively low risk (refer 2015 draft).

Yep, love the look of him too but reckon he'll be out of our reach and go top 3.

Someone is going to want to jump up to 13 on draft night to grab a player they particularly like who slipped a few places.

Draft picks skyrocket in value to a club when they know exactly who they can get. E.g. 'We thought he would be six or seven, he is going at 13, jump on it'.

Strong chance we'll take one of those offers on draft night and accept moving back a few spots plus some compensation in 2023.

For example if we can be sure of one of Keeler or Barnett with a pick in the late teens, and any tall forwards we were interested in are already gone, why not bank the spare draft points for 2023.
