Unless a reject is best 22 like Grundy then I wouldn't go for any of them, just go to the draft.

Any targets that we have been seriously linked to or is Grundy it?

Nope. Seems the club will have to back in our current list to get the job done, even with less depth than this year.

We'd been speaking to Harry McKay, but he signed a long extension. There's no other decent tall forwards on the market, so we're in a bit of a tricky spot with Ben Brown and TMac battling injury and form leading into retirement over the next 1-2 years.

So that is two years with only two additions of experience to our list:  Dunstan and Grundy.

By the look of it to win the 2023 premiership we are relying on Grundy less Jackson and some 2021 and 2022 draftees who have yet to play a game.

I was hoping we would start to fill that 23=25 yo gap in our list profile and turnover some of the more expensive but no longer likely best 22 players.

I think we are relying on a 2021 injury run, which would go a long way to us winning it again.

Is that a realistic expectation?

It can come unstuck so easily.

Agree.

Said yesterday, but other then an upgrade on Jackson I haven't seen any evidence that we've improved our list to the point where I'm confident of a top 4 finish.

Trade period hasn't finished but it's been disappointing so far.

Do we have anyone to who fits that category? Harmes and Gus are best 22 and I’m sure we investigated both going.

Bedford and Hunt, by choice or otherwise are doing exactly that.

Tomlinson is the obvious one and we’re clearly trying.

T Mc and Ben Brown I doubt we could move without significant dumping. Probably take 2nd round picks and/or paying significant amounts of their wages to find them new homes. Both still arguably best 22.

But it's probably the best thing we need.

Players with a few years to run on their contracts: TMc, Brown who struggle to get on the park for chunks of the year; Tomlinson, Hibberd and Melksham are depth.

I don't really have a problem with keeping them but if we don't bring in more experience that can play each week then we are relying on kids to replace them.

But as they say:  the night is still young!  Trade week has a way to go.

Hopefully we are heavily into someone good for next year and if we also end up with a good draft haul next year as well, then things could get very exciting.

If we happen to draft well, with our likely 2 picks this year, it can also be a big bonus to our off season.

We are also adding an AA Ruckman this trade period.

Not entirely sure it was a first priority to be honest.

Far more bigger concerns around certain positions on the ground.

He is contracted, but Carlton have told him they are happy for him to explore his options.

Good player, but is a midfielder and that's it.  Which makes it hard to break into our side.

Top three I think we should look at, purely as depth players:

1 - Cullum Brown (Pies)

2 - Tom Phillips (Hawks)

3 - Quinton Narkle (Geel)

Purely depth for cheap as chips.

Also if Tommo did leave, call me crazy which most of you will but only for cover..................O-Mac???

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
