i know all the talk is jefferson, but i'd rather get rid of 13 and a first rounder in 2023 to work our way into the pointy end of this draft and get a high quality mid

And most likely mid season or next year you might well regret this move IMO if our forward  line does not improve. Let's get Jefferson if we can and make our attack with JVR the envy of the AFL.

If that’s the availability at our pick I want us to take the upside gamble on Allan or George in that order. I think we are more chance to not go key with our first pick and try and bring forward our second to land Barnett and develop him as a forward/ruck initially or Jefferson if he falls through the first round. At pick 37 there should still be some speculative talls to consider if we rate the potential of one otherwise leave it to address in 2023.

Agree.

Serious chance that someone like a Harry Lemmey is there at 37. Was touted a genuine top 5 pick at the start of the year but his ratings dropped due to poor championships and form.

His upside for a 200cm key forward is enormous in my opinion. 

Other options I like and really hoping we select is Phoenix Foster. 197cm CHF who's got huge work rate that works up and down the ground. Contested marking another of his biggest strengths. Kicked 26 goals in 11 matches for SANFL under 18's, so he is a goal kicker.

Can actually swing into the ruck and use his leap to his advantage. In fact, in one game in the championships SA ruckman Harry Barnett was late withdrawal which mesnt they had to swing Foster into the ruck. It was a strong performance and i think thats whay recruiters then took notice of his versatility. This is the kind of versatility that will appeal to JT.

Foster has a better highlight package than Jefferson, which I guess doesn't mean much. I like the look of him but there is not much love for him in the so-called experts' power rankings.

Agree with this,

JT has a proven record and I think Jefferson is the safe pick for the Phantom draft selections as we need a key forward, but JT and his team will be looking beyond that.

For mine Pick 13 is best available because the talk of next years super draft is based on the depth of key talls.

I like the idea of taking a Hewett, Allan or George with 13 and based on the highlights reels if one of Lemmey or Foster is there at 37 then we take them, although I do like Gilbey if he lasts that long

I am wondering if our desire to trade up is to get someone like Gilbey  and we just have to have the ace of spades; Lemmey!

Big call but Foster is the type of player that has the potential to turn into a Nick Larkey or Mitch Lewis type player at AFL level.

Low picks with little fanfare in the draft but thrive in a full time professional environment.

Foster can also be a ruckman in the LJ mould but at this stage is a better forward than LJ was but not as good ruckman/midfielder.

Hey @dazzledavey36, Foster does look like he’s got some traits that should translate at AFL. His skills for his size are impressive and really strong hands overhead.

Looks like had a really solid U/18’s season at Norwood, and he looked good for SA against the Allies, so not sure why we haven’t heard his name mentioned more. Possibly needs to build his running capacity, but if we go with a smaller option at 13, I wouldn’t mind Foster later on. Apparently used to be Harry Perry’s neighbour and was quite close to Petty, so we might already have some insight.

Lemmey looks a million bucks with his size, athleticism and skill, but there have been persistent question marks on his competitiveness. Given how important that trait is to our recruitment philosophy, it may mean we pass in the national draft. It’s probably a big factor in his slide in rankings. At some point he’s worth the investment, but not sure whether we’ll pull the trigger.

For a long while I called key forwards drafted outside the first round key defenders in waiting. But Lewis and Larkey have bucked that trend.

Another option is Tom Scully, a proven goal kicker and a late birth day. Plenty of height to counter out not being the greatest mover. Would be worth it for the jokes as well.

Will Elliott could be a big chance too. His brother is looking good on debut for the Vics. Athletic pedigree. Skills. 

Could be a bit like Georgiades in 2019, with teams not so worried about the missing draft year.

Get the top end talent in now. 

Then maybe trading up from 37 into the 20’s is doable, with a F2 and 37.

I don’t know anything about Foster, Lemmey or Gilbey, but you will get one of those or another good player in the 20’s.

That way you keep your F1’s for a strong draft or trade next year.

Jefferson is a few years away from AFL at best and maybe you get just as good later, or even better next year.

I have been keen on George for a while and just accepted we would take Jefferson for need, but JT might have other plans and like most on DL, I trust him and the recruiting guys to get the job done.

Have the sense of feeling after hearing Jason Taylor talk on radio that we'll go best available with pick 13.

Hopefully a good slider from the top 10.

Monday we will find out whether all this talk of pick 19 was true or not and who they wanted at pick 13.

Trading on picks will be less interesting if nothing comes of it.

Our selections have been kept very quiet by the club, in the past we leaked like there was no tomorrow.

I have a feeling if Ed Allan is available at our pick he will be the one JT picks not Matthew Jefferson.

Agree DS Kevin Sheehan has listed a lot of talls in this years Draft, I’m sure JT and Co will be all over it. There is hopefully one with our name on it.!!

I wouldn’t be relying on what Sheehan says, he is often off the mark. I would be listening to Cal instead.

That’s true Matt but Cal doesn’t go deep enough into the Draft, I like to read up on all the options.!!

I'd be surprised if we take Jefferson if there is any question about his competitiveness. If he's worked on it and he's improved, that's positive. But if it's still a question mark, I wouldn't be surprised to see us take someone else and look for a KPF later

Gut feel is Ed Allan is first priority over Jefferson.

Probably makes sense why we are now wanting to go up two spots or so.

A lot more will be known when Cal Twomey drops his phantom draft which has been promised for this evening. I don’t know what I’ll be doing first - catch up with the state elections, watch Australia v Tunisia or watch for the Cal Twomey Phantom Draft.
