Well last year we had an incredible comeback against the cats on their Turf to cement top spot and secure double chance.

We didn't finish on top this year but it's similar the way we absolutely demolished the lions on their turf ro secure a double chance.

Just like last year 2 wins and we are in the granny.

The way we played against the lions, I would not want to have to play us.

We have done better than last year imho or at least as well, because of the injuries and protocols  one after another to our backline.

Salem, Lever, Hibberd, Petty and May have all had issues at various times and so our defence never really got to gel and be consistent.

Well it seems to  fine now.

We are back to having zip injuries barring poor Tmac and peaking at the right time.

Even Milkshake has put his hand up and said he's back and showed that the blues game wasn't just a lucky one. He played well against the lions too.

Can't wait to beat swans on the Mcg.

Well said. Any player who is at risk of complacency, just needs to have a quick glance over at Hunt or Milkshake to reset themselves!

It has been a very good year  when you finish second on the ladder. We line up for finals at the G for the first time since 2018. The major negative for me was the lack of day games. Now I know it is all about ratings for the club sponsors and our finances however on a purely personal level it is very difficult for me to get to night games now.  So I have been relegated to the box.

Support from the box counts for those that can’t make it. All part of the Demon spirit that will make its way to the G.

I can understand what you're saying as I prefer day games, too, but I'll take a season like this with mostly night games over mostly day games when we lose more than we win, even if that means having to watch many of them on TV.

2nd on the ladder, 16-6, led in 5 of our 6 losses by at least 4 goals and was within a goal in the other with only 10 minutes to play. Really only blown out in one game (Freo at the G) - it has been a remarkable season!

And only because our 2021 was marginally better, do we view the 2022 season through a potentially more negative lens.

I reckon this is true - we were the best in the comp by an absolute mile last year. Don't have to be as dominant as last year to still be the best team!

I will this week  be attempting to conquer the on line ticket system and get to the first game. Only thing that will prevent me is level 4.

Evidently coping with expectation appears to be easier for professional athletes than it does for amateur supporters.

I think we’ve handled ourselves pretty well. I think the club was exploring ways of winning based on ‘differing’ levels of effort for a lot of the season. That in itself says a lot about how well we are travelling as a club, and the quality of players we have. The real season starts now.

Leigh Mathews rule. 5 goals up, with less than 5 minutes on the clock?

I recall us kicking 3 in a minute some time last year….

I might have it a little bit wrong but since 30th July 2020

42 wins 1 draw 13 losses

that is pretty damn good

definitely the correct time to follow the Dees

Yes, see above. Has been revised to 10 goals up, with 2 mins to go.

Not if it's against Collingwood

If we’re winning comfortably against Collingwood with 1 minute to go we should Quack.

Hope it goes smoothly for you OD. You're a VIP and we need you there!

Now to break the longest drought in the AFL at the moment. (aside from Gold Coast)

Something we haven't done since 1991.

Great thread Layzie.  I'm enjoying the veil of positivity!

Amazing season, so hard to go back to back especially after an emotionally draining flag. We had the hardest draw and every team wanting to knock us off and plenty of unfit/injured players.

Goody and the coaches must be applauded for preparing the squad over preseason. Mentally showing up this year was so important. If we lost the first two games of the season we may have just squeezed into the 8!

After the Freo and Lions results I am feeling confident Goody and the team have us where they want us and we are ready to go!

it all depends on us kicking goals and not points

i'd be doing a lot of kicking practice from now on

No not a VIP layzie just a long time supporter / Member.

VIP to us anyway.

Ok, new plan. We get 10 goals up, and wolf of Wall Street comes out with 2 minutes to go!

This would be unreal!

If we don't win the ultimate prize it will be cold comfort, but I rate this seasons H&A as better than leat year.  Shorter comparative preseason, more injury impact and a much harder draw and still only 1.5 wins less is a wonderful achievement.

And the fact that two of our best wins of the season have come in the last four weeks.

And the fact that we've had a brutal last 4 weeks as opposed to last year's last month where we had the struggling Gold Coast, West Coast and Adelaide.

It's a very good achievement.

Another good achievement is that we finished 2nd despite playing literally half of our season against top 8 sides.

Meanwhile Richmond ....  🙄

Yep, excluding 2021 this is the best season I've seen in all my years following the Demons. I think we went 16-6 in 1990 but finished 4th in an elimination final.

Just want to let people know that The Demon Spirit is alive and well in this "small corner of a foreign field".

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
