I have been reading in the news and the web all these potential trades of many key forwards or key players (defenders or rucks).

However there is not much noise about the MFC going after a tall forward which we clearly need. Is there no interest to come to the reigning Premiers?

Who are the available players that would improve our list who do not want to come to the club? Good key forwards are hard to come by, and expensive to recruit.

If Collingwood want to pay McStay $600K a year, good luck to them. Franklin is 35 and wants $800K which prices us out.

I don't see a Tom Lynch or Jeremy Cameron on the market this year, not even a Peter Wright. Maybe you could make a play for Mitch Georgiades, but West Coast would seem more likely.

Perhaps better to save some cap space and make a play for Harry McKay next year.

Perhaps a bit more detail in the topic title might include something about 'media reports'. Just because it's not in the media, it doesn't mean conversations aren't occurring.

Aaron Naughton wants to come to us??

I would agree, but I don't know how to amend the topic title 😅

When KPF’s see the quality of our forward 50 entries, I’m not surprised no one’s banging the door down.

OMG So it’s the best midfield in the competition who’s at fault not the key position forwards ala Brown who can’t get to the contest but when he does runs under the ball & puts one hand up in the air, or Weiderman when he plays struggles unfortunately to have much impact on the contest

I was wrong all the time

Best contested ball winning midfield, definately not elite for foot skills and kicking to forwards advantage. There is a screen grab on another thread that's shows our midfield are below average going forward

Not exactly a swag of out of contract KPFs looking to move..

Maybe we could go medium sized with Petracca up forward for periods or maybe even Brayshaw or a combo of either/or (as well as Fritsch)

40% game time up forward for Petracca & Brayshaw would also mean that both play in the midfield for 60% of the time

Talls being Brown & Gawn until T-Mac gets himself fit.  And if we've earmarked Gawn to play predominantly forward then pursuing Grundy makes sense

We need forwards who can create separation and good midfielders can often play forward quite well

Remembering that Petracca was our best forward in 2019 averaging about 20 disposals as a high half forward

Also reckon that Brayshaw could play a forward role well ... he can create space for himself, reads the play well, is a good mark for his size, has plenty of courage and is a good kick for goal

In a general sense, our midfielders should all be kicking more goals anyway ... collectively they get a stack of the ball so why not drift forward and get amongst the goals? Get a bit hungry like Fritsch!

Would we take Max King ... Hard to say yes with his poor kick, it's worse than our own Max

I would prefer someone bigger than 192/88 to throw their weight around when TMac goes.  JVR is not built to do that.  The beanpoles are more readily available. McKay would be good.

Some of those shots last night were embarrassing. It has to be fixable though surely?

Pies, Freo, us...not amazing forwardlines yet still premiership contenders

Maybe key forwards continue to get overrated, they're icing on top!

Max King is straight out of a Shakespearian Tragedy.  Still kicked 40+ goals though.

(if you want your son to be a good kick dont name them Max)

We've got forwards that can get separation, but we don't have a game plan that utilises them. Fritsch, Brown and Weid have displayed that they can get separation at times. I'm a huge critic of Weid, but his one strength is leading.

Last week was the most disappointing loss of the season. I've never seen a game where one side totally obliterates the other in contested possession and clearances for a vast majority of the game, and lose. We should have been 10 goals up at the 10 min mark of the 3rd quarter. And it comes down to our one dimensional way of entering our forward 50.

That fact that all our mids bomb the ball inside 50, even when they have space and time, suggests that it's a coaching directive. All season I've been hearing Goodwin and now Stafford say that we need to get better in that area, but I don't see any change in game plan. Even when we had Melksham one out against Darcy Moore, we still bombed it on his head. The fact that he didn't lead, again must have been a coaching directive.

Bombing into 50 worked for part of the G/F, but we've become too predictable. We're not taking advantage of our midfield dominance, and it's not the forwards that are to blame.

Can you name the last Premier who didn't have at least 2 reasonable tall key forwards.

Max swings his hips when running in then pulls his leg across his body mid kick.
His ball drop is not consistent action either.

Ratten says he works on it all the time, even on his days off but he's being doing the above since I first saw him play in his debut.
The have Jarryd Roughhead down there working with him, but I have not see an improvement. kicked 47.41 for the year.

Just off the top of my head

Bulldogs in 2016 only had Boyd

Hawks 2015  only had Roughhead.

Great key forwards obviously help. Obviously.

But we're a hybrid model. And if we're going to continue playing Brown, T Mac and Gawn then we need to change our smalls up. Simple as that. More dynamic players with real forward craft and an ability to kick goals.

Agree on the way the ball is delivered into the forward line but we only have 2 players that can create seperation as well as being  competitive forwards (Brown & Fritsch but not Weideman) And there is no one else apart from Gawn on occasions

So given we've got 2 small forwards (usually) we need at least 1 more forward who can present ... so I've suggested Petracca or Brayshaw (but not both at the same time)

Or another KPF which we haven't got right now ... Weideman isn't the answer and JVR needs more time in the 2nds by the looks of it

The addition of just one more marking option up forward can make a difference but again, the coaching directive to bomb it in is telegraphing our intentions.  And being defended against to good effect ... often it works though so the tactic is sound

We just over do it sometimes

We need more variation with hit-up passes for forwards on the lead (or being kicked to when they've created space)

We need to keep the opposition guessing and we're not panicking the opposition defenders right now

T-Mac can't come back into the side quickly enough but both Tommy & Brown have got injury concerns and both are entering their 30's

Only playing 1 KPF means that that player is often double or triple teamed.  Brown can sometimes overcome the odds but Weideman is more of a 3rd forward (and we've already got Fritsch for that role)

Yeah there's so much contorting of the body for no reason.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
