That’s him in the hot seat. The  hot seat has way different levels of pressure and anxiety to release than the not quite so hot seat.
he will be in a very different head space and can go back to what got him the senior gig to begin with - having Goody and Chocco deal with the pressure cooker environment would allow anyone be their best as a coach/strategist and Leon was pretty good at it as a player and especially earlier in his coaching career

Yeah that's a fair call, could have a different temperament in a different role I guess.

Yes and no.

Voss is doing exactly that at Carlton. Another 12 months and they might be top 4.

Fagan as a first time coach at lowly Brisbane and now doing a very good job.

Ten years ago your comments would have been spot on. These days it's more case by case. I think Ooze is a terrific coach-in-waiting. If he doesn't succeed at GWS or North I reckon he's too good to be overlooked at another club that suits his approach.

But hey, let's hope he stays for the 3 peat!

stay for the 3 peat.!!

Now there's confidence.

I'll take B2B  for now.

You dont want to be that positive on  DL. You'll upset all the doom and gloomers.

If Yze does go i hope its to GWS so maybe we can do some player swaps and snag a few forwards.

Wouldn't suit our culture at all. We have a pretty measured, calm, balanced coaching group (even Choco is pretty chill these days), and Cameron is all yelling and negative energy. Big no from me.

Is there a different Leon Cameron? By all reports an absolute gentleman. If anything he probably bought about his own downfall giving the players too much leg rope at the giants. Of course there were times he lost it as his job was slipping away but he’s a mild mannered family man. I’ve never been a fan of his tactics but he’d be an excellent skills and development coach.

One of the best kicks I’ve seen, would be an enormous asset in that department

Go watch the Making Their Mark documentary on Amazon Prime. It follows a number of players and coaches throughout the 2020 season.

Cameron did not come across well, was very negative towards his players and made poor decisions. The way he handled Coniglio as a person and leader around the players was disgraceful. Perhaps he’d be ok as an assistant coach again with less pressure on him, but based on what was shown you’d steer clear of him being in your club environment.

Stuart Dew on the other hand was far more positive and involved with developing and connecting with his players. He put the time in with Rowell and other youngsters and was far more encouraging with his approach and language as well as being more creative with activities to stimulate the players.

Hardwick was also much better at motivating and connecting with his players. Can see why Richmond were very  successful under him despite not liking him.

Blake Caracella might be looking for a job around the same time we (likely) lose Yze....

Just saying.

I totally agree.

Blake Caracalla was instrumental for Richmond turning themselves around, especially in regards to their forward half game.

Also has experience of working under Thompson and Chris Scott at the Cats from 09-11, and Malthouse from 06-09.

Would be a great replacement for Yze, or even becoming our forwards coach, allowing Stafford to take the ruck/mids.

Surely we ask the question.......

I developed a poor opinion of him after watching 'Making Their Mark', it was then backed up from some things I heard from someone who had feedback directly from the coach's box.

Just mentioned this as part of my reply before seeing this comment.

Couldn't agree more, and the differences between the 3 coaches was absolutely stark. Hardwick a fantastic teacher, Dew great with relationships and Cameron just a barking dog.

Fair enough, but I’d take more notice of someone who’s worked with him personally than the documentary.

The Giants were having a flop of a year after being destroyed in a grand final and Coniglio wasn’t a great fit as a new captain. Pretty easy to selectively edit that stuff. I’d imagine you’d find plenty on Goody from 2020 and even worse in 2019.

The Tigers were premiers. Dew got pumped up. Sloane was Sloane. Someone had to be the bad guys and GWS were the obvious choice.

I think Cameron did a great job at GWS but was probably at the end of his coaching tether by about 2018 and 2019 masked a lot.

He’s keen to stay in Sydney for his kids schooling so I doubt he’ll join us next year anyway.

I'd be looking at him if that's the case. Rate his CV

Where is he at the moment?

We need someone who has the balls and experience to stand up to Goody (not in a bully way), but have courage to challenge him. I'd also like someone that has a strong focus on ball movement. We need to move on from this crappy 'playing the %'s', defend with ball in hand game style. Can still play defense - no issue with that - but we need to be more lethal in scoring from turnover, that has completely disappeared from our game this year.

Oh and defn a forward coach.

If Yze does go to the Giants - and good luck to him if he does, he really does deserve it! Maybe we could trade for Stevie J, I think he's got the making of an excellent coach - super footy brain, plus like Dimma and Goody, still seems to have a bit of mischief about him that the players love and relate too. I think he could work well with our forwards and mid/forward connection.

I’m not sure that some of the things in this thread make a lot of sense. On other threads, there are massive criticisms of Goody for our predictable game style. I understood that Ooze was his right hand man in respect of tactics. in which case, how does that sit with him being a master tactician and great coach in waiting?

my own view is the predictability is exactly what they are trying to achieve at the moment  and given that so far we have won a premiership and are now in the top four and looking for a second one, it can’t be that bad a tactic.

Another poster has suggested we need someone who can stand up to Goodwin. I thought Darren Burgess made it very plain one of the great things about Goodwin is his preparedness to allow those working with him to have autonomy, with his full trust.

Just sayin’.

Didn't see that comment, but can tell you that we're very much a 'coaching committee' rather than a 'head coach is the boss' type setup. Yze has MUCH more responsibility than your average assistant coach, I would even describe him as more of a 'head coach' than Goody if we were judging the club by 80s/90s standards of such things. He's going to be a sensational head coach IMO.

Just to clarify though, this isn't meant to sound like a dig at Goody, he's fantastic at what he does and his ability to focus on his strengths while giving up control of aspects to others was the make or break for us in winning a flag.

We lose a lot in losing Yze, but the way the coaching dept has been set up now it's more about someone successfully filling a role.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
