picket fence 18,190 Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Stand by for Oliver, Lever and BBB all out. Not convinced all are ready, Oliver still seriously hampered with busted thumb, courtesy of Kitty Litter, Lever, nup also not convinced and BBB yep that limp was most pronounced. Petty will come in for Lever. If Melksham and Bedford get another game then we are not fair dinkum as BOTH were Terrible, and yes I know Melksham kicked a goal and have a few chase downs BUT it aint anywhere near enough. Bedford has had 2 very poor games in a row and could not possibly stay. Given this information we need to pick fresh, hard, hungry players who will bleed for the jumper. My fear is if we take injured and or out of form players the Dish lickers whose form has not been great can take us to the cleaners! 2

No surprise to me that since Bedford has played to offer repeat speed and pressure we have kept Pickett closer to goal and he has looked more dangerous. Unless we go the extra tall which I think would cost Melksham I cant see him getting dropped. NO.. pressure acts dont cut it for me... How many times did he get the ball???? Not bloody enough. BACK TO CASEY! As Barassi once said " You give me possesions.... and I'll shut up" End of Rant! Edited July 19, 2022 by picket fence 7 1

Create an aeriel contest, if no mark make sure an opponent doesn't mark it and bring it down to a predictable spot so your mids, half forwards and small forwards can score or create a stoppage. Failing that, put huge pressure on the defender who wins the ground ball and force a turnover - either a missed handball or a dump kick. Which we bounce back inside 50 because we have set up our wall. Rinse and repeat. As you note, seperation for the forwards also means seperation for the defenders. That creates more space and one on ones, which is fine if that is your method. That's how Port like to set up, so they can isolate their three key forwards. The blues have a similar set up. But that set up doesn't work for us because we want congestion not space from those long kick to a crowded forward line (as opposed to the kick to a player all by themselves inside 50 we create when are swarming forward from hb The two methods were on display in Sunday's game. Our defensive sytem renders their sytem next to useless, as evidenced in our last 3 or 4 games. That's because, like freo and the cats, we zone off brilliant and have a goal keeper role. But once we turned up the heat, our method started working, we got rolling and they couldn't stop our offence . The method worked, in large part due to Brown's work rate and contests. Most of kossie's goals were a function of our method, as were several others. My favourite was Jackson's goal, that started with nibbler's desperation and crazy smart handball to viney. All that said, we will need a second tall who can play tmac's role. We have sorely missed his up and down the ground run and his smarts in aeriel contests, for example the blocking he does for bb. I reckon weed will come back in, not this week but perhaps round 20 or 21. He'll be super clear on what his role is and goody will give him his shot. Maybe two games to prove it's his spot. If he doesn't make a compelling statement, goody had jvr, or even Smith as options. Great analysis @binman. I would love to see the Weed come back and hit the finals like he did in 2018, but this time get the medal. I think he has the ability but I'm not confident we'll see it happen. 6

redandbluemakepurple 377 Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Out: Lever (inj), Bedford (omitted) In: Oliver, Petty Melksham retained to tag Bailey Dale; a tactic that has worked well for other teams. A measly 6 disposals is offset by his defensive role, 7 tackles and 1 goal. Looks like the second tall will again have to be Fritsch and the resting ruckman. I wouldn't again try Weidman or MBrown and Goodwin won't try JVR. 1
DubDee 26,710 Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 The way Dogs/Dees games have gone recently whoever goes on a run in the 2nd/3rd Q usually loses So I’ll be seriously worries if we are ahead early in the 3rd Q! 1

Feel we need another tall target as Ben Brown is often competing and taking marks on the wing with no other talls forward of him. Bedford has been great in the vfl and shows promise but has been poor for a few weeks now. It's far too late in the season to trial this now, but as long as May and Lever are in the backline I feel Tomlinson is an adequate 3rd tall defender allowing Petty to swing forward. Something I hope we go with next year with maybe Turner replacing Tomlinson. To win the flag I think Petty should come back as CHF and Tommo keep his place at FB. On the other hand could Tommo bullock his way like Tmac snd create ball drops etc for the smalls up forward? Isn't as good a player as Tmac so let's give Petty a go at this stage. I also think Howes should be given 2/3 weeks to find form and look at him as an extra forward possibility for say HFF who can mark and move around. Yes is a gamble but worth looking at snd giving him a chance at this stage. Or maybe try Rivers up forward as he competes well. 1

That's funny, I couldn't help but think of brereton. He tore up his first finals - had an immediate impact. JVR has a bit of derm's swagger and competitiveness. Plays similarly too. JVR also has some of Breterton,'s taent. Dermie was a fantastic player, particularly his first few years. Like JVR, not that tall for a key forward, but he had great hands, and super tough to beat one on one. 2 1

I’ve now read him compared to Dermie, David Neitz, James Hird and David Schwarz (I reckon the closest 😜), and given he’d be expected to play the Tmac role, him too. Hope he’s ready to bear the load! Given Tommo’s game on Sunday, I’m getting bullish again on the Petty forward idea, despite knowing it won’t happen because he hasn’t been ‘prepared’ for it. 3 2

It wouldn't surprise me and I think lots of players would have similar thoughts - especially with incentives built into there contracts. Hopefully he doesn't push it however and doesn't rush back early and potentially damage it further. As much as our midfield battled admirably on the weekend, we're nowhere near the same level without this bloke in. 2
