Also, i know this wont be popular, but i would dangle Christian Salem out to the market.. i think he is nearly done.

Best mates with Tracc and Clarry and hopefully it was just lingering effects of injury that affected his game.

An in form Salem is one of our weapons.

what a ridiculous thought, clearly he just never really got over that knee issue properly, calling someone done after one injury at the age of 25... ludicrous!

I think this year has shown how tight things are at the top.

We've had a handful of players who have been NQR and that 5-10% difference in agility, speed, power can make all the difference. Salem looks nothing like his former self this year and if the game keeps speeding up, his lack of pace might become a worry.

Can confirm exit meetings are tomorrow and Tuesday.

So we'll have some news by the end of the week on some players.

I'm surprised that this could happen before the Casey GF (except for any players who can't play in that).

Yep totally understand that, I dont think they would trade him, i would look at it taking all the emotion out of it, but I totally get the mates aspect.

He was ultra disappointing this year and I'm aware of his injuries, he needs to get as fit as he ever has been to keep up with the game in my opinion.

That's ok, you are entitled to your opinion, and i wont be as hysterical and over the top as you clearly are. This is an opinion industry. Just my thoughts Turner, i said it wouldn't be popular..i also just said dangle not definitively trade. I think Christian need to get really fit. Also his main asset is his kicking skills, every game he played i would describe his asset as passive and non threatening.

My exact reason BW511 for even suggesting. His weapon is his precise kicking, it didn't present itself all year, injury considered, and he is slow, and getting slower.

It's the nature of the beast really. A tough competition, even when we won last year the reality was we were only marginally better than a few other teams and that goes for most years. We weren't that much better and we aren't that far off now, that's the reality.

As far as Salem goes, get his knee 100% right over the off season and come back raring to go next season. The guy is quality and we all know it, plenty of players have 'forget' seasons.

Trades?
Jackson? Likely (Freo) - if his heart is to close the family and in the surf of the Indian Ocean, then ok.
Bedford? Unlikely but possible (Bombers)… hopefully not.
Tomlinson? Unlikely but possible (Hawks) … hopefully not.

Why hopefully not?

We need to constantly update and changeover the list.

You can't hold on to and develop every player year after year.

Yep, I was surprised too.

But they're definitely happening.

Perhaps some news will be held back due to Casey playing though.

Big call. He hasn't properly recovered from his injury. When fully fit he's one of our best ball users in a team not over endowed with good ball users. No way we should trade him.

There will be a need to get guys off on their breaks so that we can get them back for preseason earlier.  I imagine the exit interviews for the SF players and ‘veterans’ can be done first, then the rest after the Casey game?  Or we just do them all and trust players receiving bad news who will line up for Casey will be mature enough to still put in?

Yep, its big call, also didn't say trade him, just said dangle his name, what if a club came and offered a first rounder? anyway, its just conjecture, but one thing i will die on the hill about is that his ball use was impotent this year, since the first game back from injury. If he isn't being a weapon with his kicking, then what is he? because he isn't quick. So what's his point of difference.

I just think he was the most disappointing player of the season and i know his injury didnt help. He should have been dropped, and it really hampered teh role of Bowey.

Really good point. If we're lucky we could trade Salem and draft the next Jordan Gysberts!

Or you know.. a key Fwd that the entire supporter base is crying out for.

No need to lose your mind over it.. just a thought.

Think you'll find players would be well aware their time is well up.

Players now days get good communication around their future even during the season.

For instance, Mitch Brown would certainly know he's time is up as would Oskar Baker who hasn't even been named emergency this year.

I think we have to build the team we want to be, not the one we were.  Maybe this pushes a few players up or down the pecking order.  We do need to prioritise acceleration, speed, disposal quality over long distance and grass protection.

Salem won’t net us Cadmen, he’s the only decent KPF in this draft

Was waiting for this one. Salary cap dump of the highest order. Huge mistake from the Blues, who thought he would be a mid for them.

Cant see any interest for him.

i can - speedy halfbacks who hit targets are few and far between

BUT

who wants to pay him $800k a year? surely that values him at around a third round pick if you take on his full wage; salary dump of the highest order

That's true, but what if it was to help get us to Cadmen? Man this has rattled the cages. Ok, so we wont trade Salem, i get that. But if we stand still we get left behind. Great sides have a history of being ruthless by being progressive. Will we be daring and look to refresh, or will we, like we did when we lost the prelim in 2018 just assume this list will get it done next year?

I think this will be an interesting watch over the preseason and into 2023.

No doubt the majority of our supporter base has had enough of the one dimensional, defensively minded game plan. I am not convinced our coaching staff have though.

I've said a few times that I think we play the game plan we do based on the players we have. There's not a lot of leg speed or elite kicking skills to allow us to play the Collingwood/Sydney style and win consistently. I fear we will go the Geelong route and keep topping up around the edges while we have Max, May, Clarry & Trac around

I know he's been a known commodity for a lot longer than this year but Collingwood are entrusting Nick Daicos with a lot of what they do and he's a first year. I would say Sydney and Freo are also being driven by their young blokes around the footy.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
